Chapter 97 Throwing a Tantrum

"You're talking nonsense. Don't believe her. My son only hangs out with high-class ladies. He has plenty of options. Why would he choose you? You're shameless. Nothing you say matters. Ask around." Megan pulled another girl forward. "Allyson’s family is fighting for Louis. Her background is way better than yours, but Louis still didn't agree. Why would he care about you?"

The woman initially looked pleased her daughter was mentioned, but her face turned red with shame and anger. She pulled back, glaring at me but not daring to speak.

I was furious. 'Do none of you get it? Why are you glaring at me? I didn't insult you. If you have the guts, confront the person who did. Taking it out on me is pointless.'

I said, "I feel sorry for Allyson. If she knew you'd belittle her in front of her mom, would she still want to marry into your family? Getting slapped in the face hurts, doesn’t it?"

Allyson’s mom felt deeply ashamed. After standing there awkwardly, she turned and left in a huff.

Megan’s behavior even made Mindy’s mom step back for her own safety.

I couldn't understand how Louis could have such a foolish mother. It was a miracle he turned out okay living with her.

Realizing her mistake too late, Megan got furious and tried to scratch my face. "You bitch, you’re trying to cause trouble. I’ll make sure my son never wants you. Do you believe me?"

I quickly sidestepped to avoid her. Megan was throwing a tantrum, but I had to keep my cool. I couldn't let myself suffer.

I said, "Thanks, really. With a mother like you, Louis is truly pitiful. By the way, let’s continue. I didn’t want to make this public because Louis and I are classmates, and we’ll still see each other. I didn’t want to hurt his feelings. If we can’t be lovers, we can still be friends. But you forced my hand. You know whether I clung to Louis or if he likes me. If you don’t know, call your son and ask. Also, Louis and I never dated. I never took a penny from him. Even when he gave me flowers, I returned a gift worth more. I don’t owe him or your family anything. You have no right to trouble me. I agreed to go to your house because I valued my friendship with him. You can disregard your son’s dignity, but I can’t use Louis like you. Megan, having a mother like you is truly unfortunate for Louis."

"Who are you calling unfortunate? Bitch, I’ll kill you!" Megan shouted.

Before she could finish, she lunged at me again. Some male schoolmates passing by stopped her and told her not to cause trouble at school.

The schoolmates probably heard the whole story, especially since Megan kept bringing up my background, which hit a nerve with the crowd. Most students here were regular folks who couldn't stand being belittled like that. So, they were on my side now.

Plus, many had seen Louis come to find me, and Megan’s wild behavior without any real proof made her claims seem sketchy.

I added, "Megan, you should stop causing trouble. If you hurt me, you'll be held responsible."

Megan shot back, "I'll hurt you, and who can stop me?"

"Mom, what are you doing?" A deep, angry voice stopped Megan in her tracks. Her arm froze mid-air, fingers still clawed, looking ridiculous.

I turned around, shocked. 'Why was he here?'

Louis, supported by Mindy and Howard, was walking over slowly.

Mindy handed him over to Howard, then ran to Paige, pulling her away while whispering something. Paige followed Mindy, probably also shocked by Megan’s behavior.

Louis leaned on Howard, his thin face showing clear pain. His eyes, looking at his mother, were filled with sadness, anger, and grief, but mostly despair.

After Megan’s outburst today, there would be no relationship between Louis and me. That was probably why he looked so crushed.

In just over a day, Louis had lost more weight. He stood there, swaying slightly as if he might collapse at any moment.

I felt a pang of sadness and wanted to comfort him, but I didn’t know what to say. At this point, anything I said would be pointless.

Unable to find the right words, I chose to stay silent. I didn’t know how much of what I had just said he had heard. Being spoken to like that by the girl he liked must have hurt him too.

I had no choice but to say those things.

Megan was too aggressive, coming to the school to ruin my reputation. I was just trying to protect myself. I hoped Louis could understand.

Caught between me and his mother, he must have felt very conflicted.

"Louis, why are you here? I’m teaching this shameless woman a lesson. You should go back. There are plenty of good girls in the world. How dare she reject you? She should look at herself. She’s just relying on her looks. Shameless!" Megan kept ranting, but Louis’s eyes were filled with sorrow. I couldn’t bear to see him like that and turned my head away.

Louis begged, "Mom, please stop. Give yourself and me some dignity. That’s the girl I like. I’ve had a crush on her for eight years. I pursued her willingly. Why do you all have to target her? Jane always said we came from different backgrounds and that our relationship wouldn’t end well. I didn’t believe her. I told her I wasn’t like that and wouldn’t let her suffer. But now, Jane was right. Everything she said has come true. I love her, but I can’t protect her. The person bullying her is my own mother. How can I say I love her? Go home, Mom. Don’t push me."
