Chapter 208: The Pursuit
"Yeah, you love me, I get that. But you love power and status even more. When it comes to those things, I was never your top pick. Benjamin, nobody wants to spend their whole life waiting for someone else to make up their mind. I've done everything I could for you, but you never looked back. I can't do this anymore.
I'm not as kind and forgiving as you think, and I can't share the person I love with another woman. She's not just some girl in your heart; she's also your ticket to future power and status. I know my place in your heart can't compare to hers. And your desire to have it all, to have the best of both worlds, is really gross to me. So, I gave up. I loved you, but now, I don't love you anymore, and I can't love you anymore. That's all I gotta say, you can go now. Like I said before, goodbye forever."
Benjamin never saw it coming that Mia, who always let him have his way, would break up with him so firmly.
He stared at Mia in disbelief, trying to catch even a hint of reluctance, sadness, or anger in her beautiful eyes.
But he was let down.
Except for that brief moment of hesitation when she first saw him, Mia's gaze stayed calm and steady the whole time. The eyes that always looked at him with such tenderness and affection now showed no trace of warmth or love, as flat as a dead lake.
For the first time, Benjamin was scared, for the first time, he felt unsure about this relationship. He thought Mia loved him so much that she could never leave him. He was willing to take care of her for a lifetime, give her the best of everything, after all, they had loved each other since they were young, and their feelings were deep. As long as she obediently listened to him, he would always love her, pamper her, and let her share everything he had.
But he never knew that Mia didn't want wealth and luxury; she just wanted a home, a husband who loved her. Even if that husband had nothing, she had the confidence to achieve everything they wanted together with him.
Benjamin probably never thought that Mia would want to leave him one day, and leave so decisively.
At this moment, Benjamin felt empty, his mind blank, and his chest aching with emptiness.
"Mia, tell me, are you leaving me because of him?" Benjamin blocked Mia from leaving, looking pained, his eyes red as if he had been deeply wounded.
Mia, too tired to explain, just said softly, "Benjamin, it's been five years. If I had wanted to be like you even for one day, it wouldn't end up like this. Alright, I've said everything I needed to say, you should go back. Since you have a child now, live your life well. I'm leaving, don't come looking for me again."
"Jane, let's go, it's too late now, we might not get a table." Mia forced a smile and said to me. "And Yancy, I'm sorry for taking up so much of your time. I'll treat you to dinner to make up for it, okay?"
"If you're treating, then I'll eat a lot." Yancy grinned, showing her big white teeth, looking super happy.
The three of us walked away together. Benjamin just stood there, not following.
Mia straightened her back, her eyes filled with tears, biting her lip to keep them from falling.
After walking a long distance, I looked back, seeing he was still standing there, staring blankly in our direction, like a statue.
The owner, who was an acquaintance, greeted us warmly when we arrived and quickly brought out the dinner we ordered.
Mia and I sat across from each other, with Yancy sitting next to Mia.
As Mia ate, her tears fell into her plate. She put down her fork and covered her eyes with a tissue, sobbing.
I let out a long sigh of relief.
It was good that she could cry. I was so afraid she would hold it all in and make herself sick. Now that everything had been said, her story with Benjamin was officially over. She could cry out all her grievances and then truly start anew.
And Benjamin, with his pride built from his status and power, wouldn't entangle further.
From today on, she and Benjamin were completely over.
After she finished wiping her nose, she said, "Yancy, that man was my ex-boyfriend. I loved him very much, for almost five years. During those five years, I lived with him. I'm sorry you had to see me like this. I don't deserve you; you deserve better. So, let's end it here, don't come looking for me again."
Yancy leaned in carefully and asked, "Will you still love him in the future?"
"No."
"If he comes back to you, will you go back to him? He seems very rich and probably knows how to make girls happy."
"No."
"If you could do it all over again, would you still choose him?"
"No."
Yancy suddenly beamed, his thick eyebrows and big eyes full of satisfied smiles. "Then that's it. I wasn't there for you back then, and you suffered so much. My bad But your future will belong to me, only to me, and that's enough."
Mia paused for a moment, confused, and turned her head, only to see Yancy's doting smile. "Your heart is the purest, it was in the past, it is now, and it always will be. So, are you ready, Mia? Starting tomorrow, I'm officially going to pursue you. This is something I've always wanted to do but never dared."
"Why?" Mia asked, bewildered.
"Because I could sense you had someone in your heart. So, no matter how much I liked you, I didn't dare to say anything. Today, you let go of your past, which means there's no one in your heart anymore. Of course, I have to pursue you now. Mia, give me a chance to love you. I swear, if I ever make you cry, I'll deserve the worst."
Hearing this, Mia forked a piece of meat and stuffed it into his mouth, grumbling, "If you keep talking nonsense, I'll choke you."
I watched them with a smile, feeling very relaxed. This was the most relaxed I had felt since Mia arrived.
Maybe Mia hadn't fallen for Yancy yet, and no one knew when she would open her heart to accept Yancy. But since she had officially said goodbye to her past and was starting anew, the day Yancy's wish came true wouldn't be far off.
