Chapter 306: Postponement

Jenny's constant scheming and poking at Brad had really gotten under his skin.

"Jane's my line in the sand. Anyone messes with her, they pay. Yeah, that means you too. There's nothing between us, so quit wasting your time. Like I said, focus on getting better. I'll do my best to repay you for saving my life, but love? That's off the table. Stop with the pointless crap; it's seriously grossing me out."

Brad hung up, chucked his phone onto the bed, and moved to the window.

I walked over and wrapped my arms around his waist from behind, pressing my face into his back. "Don't get all worked up. What's the plan for tomorrow?"

Brad's body started to relax, and he put his hand over mine. "We've got three days off. Anywhere you wanna go? Or we could head back to Sunhaven. You haven't seen your folks in a while; miss 'em?"

"Aren't you swamped with work?"

Brad turned around, cupped my face, and pressed his forehead to mine, so close I could feel his breath. He kissed me and said, "Work never ends. Leaving my little darling alone all the time sucks. So, making some time for you is the least I can do, right?"

"Awesome, Brad, let's go back to Sunhaven. I miss Helen's cooking."

"Alright, whatever my darling wants. I'll book the tickets now."

After booking the tickets, Brad and I snuggled up for a peaceful sleep.

Just as I was about to drift off, Brad's soft sigh snapped me out of it.

The room was too dark to see his face, but I knew he was worried.

"Why are you awake?" Brad asked, his voice rough in the dark.

I turned to him and reached out to touch his eyes. "Worried about Jenny?"

"Yeah." Brad kissed my fingertips and pulled me closer. "If I'd known Jenny would turn out like this, I'd rather have been the one hurt."

"I didn't see this coming either, but she did save your life. We can't just ignore her."

"It's 'cause we can't ignore her that I'm worried."

"But what can we do? She only wants you and doesn't care about anyone else. No matter what we do, it won't help. By the way, Brad, wasn't the caregiver you found for her? Why does it seem like she and Jenny are tight?"

"Yeah, I did, but Jenny fired her after a day. Said she wasn't a good fit and found this one herself."

I knew it; a regular caregiver wouldn't act like that.

"What's Jenny's deal anyway? Those two guys treat her like royalty. They can't just be regular company hires. And she's been hurt for ages, yet no family has shown up. Is she an orphan or something?"

This question had been bugging me for a while, and I really wanted to know.

If I were seriously hurt, my parents would drop everything to be with me. They wouldn't leave me alone for a second, let alone not show up at all.

She was either an orphan or had some mysterious background she didn't want us to know about.

"She's super secretive about who she is. I tried getting her records from the Northern Institute of the Arts, but the person in charge had an emergency and hasn't gotten back to me yet."

So, Brad and I took this chance to have a deep convo about Jenny.

I’d been itching to have a heart-to-heart with Brad to get a read on his feelings about Jenny and the whole situation.

This was crucial for our future, and I needed to get to the bottom of it.

Brad didn’t hold back and laid it all out. He said he only felt gratitude towards Jenny, no romantic vibes at all. Our main job now was to take care of Jenny and help her get better ASAP.

With the confidence Brad gave me, I knew how to handle things with Jenny going forward and tried not to be too passive.

Our flight was at 10 AM, so Brad and I got up early. We packed our bags and planned to leave for the airport at 8:30 AM.

Just as we grabbed our luggage, Adam called.

Luckily, this time Adam called Brad, not me.

Brad was at the point where just hearing or seeing Adam's name would tick him off.

He frowned and answered the phone. After listening for less than thirty seconds, he got pissed. Brad hung up and looked at me, clearly annoyed.

I felt a bit guilty, thinking I had done something to upset him. I mentally reviewed my actions over the past few days but couldn’t think of anything. So why was Brad looking at me so angrily?

Brad dejectedly tossed his luggage back and took my hand to leave.

"Aren't we taking the luggage?"

"The trip to Sunhaven's gotta wait. We need to hit the school first."

"Is it Larry? Why is he bugging you now? He's so annoying." I said, both disappointed and angry, and kicked the suitcase.

I had already told Helen this morning that I’d be coming back today and asked her to make something delicious for me. Now the trip was postponed, and considering Brad's work, this delay could mean we wouldn’t have time to go back at all.

"It's not Larry. Daniel's in trouble."

I was furious.

Why did Daniel always get into trouble at the crucial moments? I had reason to believe he was doing it on purpose.

He was someone I’d feel lucky never to see again in my life. I really didn’t want to deal with him.

But he was Brad's brother.

Fine, let's go, for Brad's sake.

Following Brad to a secluded corner of the school, we saw three people.

Daniel stood with his hands on his hips, looking disgusted. Zoe was half-lying on the ground, crying, her makeup a mess, surrounded by a pool of blood so thick it made me want to puke. Rachel, whom I hadn’t seen in a while, was covering the right side of her face, her eyes filled with tears but stubbornly refusing to let them fall.

What the heck was going on?

I looked at Daniel with disgust. Zoe's condition was too similar to Mia having a miscarriage. Did he do this? I couldn’t understand how Daniel could still hook up with Zoe after what she did to him!

And it was his kid, after all. Why would he be so cruel as to destroy it himself?
