Chapter 358 Jerk
So, after that dinner, Lillian and I had a heart-to-heart about Amelia and Ryan. We both agreed they were a total mismatch.
Amelia was super outgoing, always warm and genuine with everyone. She'd been into martial arts since she was a kid and even snagged second place in the state youth competition two years in a row. If she hadn't gotten injured, she might've gone pro.
Ryan, on the other hand, was like a walking ice cube. He acted like he didn't even know he was Amelia's boyfriend, always treating her like she was invisible.
Even someone as clueless as me could tell Ryan didn't give a damn about Amelia. The only reason they were together was because Amelia was putting in all the effort.
I couldn't wrap my head around why someone as strong-willed as Amelia would stick around in such a lopsided relationship. It just wasn't worth it. I wanted to tell her to ditch Ryan. The world's huge; there's gotta be a guy out there who'd love her to pieces.
But Lillian said Ryan was like a god to Amelia. She didn't get it either, but she knew Amelia would never give up on him, no matter what. Even her parents tried to step in and scold her, but it was pointless. Amelia had made up her mind, and she didn't want me to say anything more.
Lillian said as good friends, we should just support Amelia's choice.
So, for years, it was always Amelia chasing after Ryan. I didn't see them much since I lived far away, but Lillian, who was closer to Amelia's family, saw them more often and knew more about what was going on.
When I asked about Amelia's breakup, Lillian, usually so chill, let out a big sigh and told me a story.
Amelia was Ryan's girlfriend, but he had this other girl from his past that he couldn't let go of. Whenever that girl called, Ryan would drop everything and run to her, no matter what. He didn't care if Amelia was hurt or sad.
"How could Ryan treat Amelia like that? Who's this girl anyway? Isn't it shameful to be Ryan's side chick? Ryan's actions clearly show he doesn't love Amelia. Why is Amelia so blind? It's a good thing they broke up," I said, fuming.
It reminded me of Jenny, who wrecked other people's relationships for their own gain without any shame.
Lillian said, "Wait until you hear this. Recently, both families sat down to talk about Amelia and Ryan's marriage. Ryan actually brought that girl along. I was there that day. You wouldn't believe it; that girl was so annoying I wanted to slap her. She was late, and then she insisted on sitting next to Ryan in front of everyone. When Amelia didn't give up her seat, she looked all teary-eyed and pitiful.
Ryan's mom was just as clueless. Instead of backing up Amelia, she told her to give up her seat. Amelia didn't want to cause a scene, so she reluctantly gave in. Ryan, that idiot, kept serving that girl food and water, taking care of her like she was his girlfriend. Anyone watching would think they were the couple."
"Ryan's a jerk. Doesn't he care about breaking Amelia's heart? If it were me, I would've flipped the table and stormed out with my parents. He's out of his mind," I said, still angry. Amelia actually put up with that kind of humiliation. What was she thinking?
I couldn't wrap my head around how someone as strong as Amelia would lose her self-respect for a guy who didn't give a damn about her. It was maddening. I was so pissed, I punched my knee.
Lillian chimed in, "And get this, it gets worse. That chick claimed she felt sick and collapsed into Ryan's arms. That moron Ryan ditched everyone and rushed her to the hospital. He didn't come back. Amelia blew up his phone with calls and texts, but he ghosted her for three days. Isn't that infuriating? I was there; if my mom hadn't held me back, I would've kicked Ryan's ass."
Yeah, I was thinking the same. Ryan deserved a good beating and then to be dumped. Let him and that shameless girl rot together and never mess with anyone else again.
"So, Amelia broke up with him because of this, right? Good for her. Breaking up was the best move."
Lillian went on, "Ryan took that girl to the hospital, and the doc said she had an allergic reaction to her clothes and needed to switch to pure cotton. Guess what happened next?"
I said, "What could've happened? Even if Ryan's a total idiot, he wouldn't change her clothes himself, right?"
Lillian said, "You guessed it. Not only did he buy her a new cotton dress, but he also personally changed her clothes, including her underwear."
I was about to lose it.
I thought, 'Does he even have any respect for Amelia? He looks all refined with his glasses, but who knew he was such a scumbag? Ryan should be tossed into a landfill to fend for himself! Or let a pack of wild dogs tear him apart and turn him into poop.'
I said, "Thank God this happened. Otherwise, who knows when Amelia would've left Ryan. If she found out after they got married, it would've been too late. Wasting her life on a jerk like Ryan isn't worth it."
Lillian said, "Yeah, but it's Amelia who's suffering. Ryan never liked her, and now that they're done, he's probably thrilled. Amelia's so heartbroken she's lost a ton of weight and has no energy. It kills me to see her like this."
Knowing why Amelia broke up with Ryan made me not just angry but also really sorry for her and all the effort she put in.
I said, "Ryan's gonna regret it."
Lillian said, "So what if he regrets it? He really hurt Amelia this time. No matter what he does, she'll never go back to him."
I said, "If Amelia can really stick to not forgiving Ryan, that'd be the best. But it's still tough on her, poor thing."
Lillian said, "I see Amelia struggling after the breakup, but I believe she'll get through it. It's just a matter of time."
I said, "I believe in Amelia too."
Amelia's situation left me feeling super down. I barely touched my noodle soup, and it turned into a mushy mess, just like Amelia's chaotic love life. No matter how hard she tried, it couldn't go back to the way it was. At least she didn't marry Ryan.
After hanging up with Lillian, it was time for my afternoon class. I rushed back to the classroom, totally forgetting to ask Amelia about Adam.
That evening, Brad came home early and told me the new project was set to start negotiations in early December. Before that, he'd have a few days completely free to spend with me—whether we went on dates or visited my parents in Sunhaven.
