Chapter 304: Can't Fool Brad
Brad and I shot a glance at the nurse.
Tomorrow's drama was a whole other beast, but right now, the nurse's take was key.
Sure, it might not change the endgame, but it’d definitely mess with my vibe.
"If this mess is 'cause of some nurse screw-up, we gotta make 'em pay," I said, dead serious.
Look, I ain't a jerk. Jenny was the one twisting the nurse's arm. I wasn't about that life. I just wanted the nurse to spill the truth.
And man, that truth was everything to us.
Lucky for us, the nurse didn't let us down.
She bit her lip, looking all shy, but then she got her game face on.
Yeah, she was scared, but she wasn't losing it. After a sec, she looked at Brad and said, "I remember locking the rehab room door. I did it myself. Checked it at 8 PM, and it was still locked. If it got opened later, someone must've gone hardcore. Every hallway's got cameras. If I messed up, it’s on tape. I can lose this job, but I ain't getting blamed for something I didn't do."
Then she stomped her foot, pouting.
Her words hit hard.
When she mentioned the cameras, Jenny's face went from bad to worse, and her fake smile vanished. The tall dude next to her looked like he was about to keel over.
See? Easy peasy.
Cameras everywhere, and Jenny had to know that.
Today's stunt was Jenny's Hail Mary, trying to get Brad to see her at night. What happened next was all on her improv skills.
If Jenny won, Brad and I would be on the outs, maybe even split up.
If she lost, she'd just get called shameless again. Big whoop, she’d been called that a million times. With her "life-saving" card, she'd always find another shot.
But man, this low-level move made me lose even more respect for her. With her smarts and charm, she should've known better.
Love can really turn people into idiots, making 'em do crazy stuff.
The nurse might've seemed weak, but she knew right from wrong and had solid values. Not bad at all.
I shot her a thumbs-up.
Feeling the love, the nurse's red eyes sparkled with a bit of pride.
After watching Jenny and me go at it for a bit, Brad finally chimed in, "Alright, you both have points. This is serious. I don't want to wrong anyone, but I also won't let the guilty walk. Tomorrow, I'll personally hit up the hospital to get the surveillance footage from after 8 PM. This way, we clear the nurse's name and give you some answers, Jenny. We'll figure out who's responsible tomorrow.
Oh, and Jenny, since you're hurt again, is there anywhere else you're feeling off? This rehab place isn't great for treating external injuries. If you need, I can take you to Regalia Hospital for a check-up."
He was being real. Jenny's situation was partly on Brad and kinda on me too. So yeah, we did care about her health.
"I'm exhausted, and my wounds hurt. I just want to rest. Brad, thanks for thinking of me, but no need to trouble yourself. The nurse is tired too; she should rest. No one wanted this, and it wasted everyone's time. So, I won't push it."
Jenny played the weak and considerate card again.
But to me, every word screamed that it was the nurse's fault, and she was being all noble by not making a fuss, expecting gratitude.
So I said, "Jenny, if you're in pain, speak up. Don't just tough it out. If something else happens, you'll be the one hurting. Pack up and change; we'll take you for a check-up right now."
Jenny closed her eyes weakly, and when she opened them, she looked even more fragile, her voice softer, "Jane, really, there's no need. By the way, Jane, you have classes tomorrow, so you should go back. Just let Brad take care of me here; no need for both of you to stay."
Was that some kind of joke?
Right in front of me, she wanted my boyfriend to stay and take care of her, and send me away?
Who did she think she was?
Before today, I thought Daniel was gross, but Jenny? She's on another level.
Brad was caught off guard by her words, choking and coughing. Seeing my death glare, he pressed his chest to stop coughing.
I couldn't hold back and said, "Oh, so you're saying as long as Brad's here, your wounds won't hurt even without treatment? If it's that magical, I might as well take these two gentlemen and the caregiver away, leaving Brad to take care of you alone, in a loving way. How about that? This method might be more effective. What do you think, Jenny?"
Jenny didn't dare look at me but still tried to defend herself, "Brad, that's not what I meant. Jane's overthinking."
Brad stared at me, his eyes twinkling with amusement.
Smart as he was, he already knew what I was thinking.
And yeah, Jenny's little tricks weren't fooling Brad either.
