Chapter 363 The Unexpected Event

I was totally lost in Jenny's eyes, seeing a mini-me with messy hair and a freaked-out look, completely disheveled.

This round? Yeah, I was the loser.

In over twenty years, I'd never felt this kind of panic, like something was slipping right through my fingers.

I squeezed my palm hard; the sharp pain was the only thing keeping me somewhat clear-headed.

After more than half a month of radio silence, Jenny just popped up at the big new project meeting at National Capital University. Who'd buy that she wasn't doing it on purpose?

Jenny today? Flawless makeup, cool as a cucumber, with that smug confidence and a mocking sneer.

Everything about Jenny screamed she was gunning for me. Jenny, she was doing it on purpose.

Since the day she said she was ditching Regalia, she'd been hunting for a chance to humiliate me in front of everyone. She wanted to get back at Brad and me for rejecting her.

At the same time, she was giving Brad a heads-up that dumping her was the dumbest move ever. 'Cause neither Brad nor I could dodge the games of big money. And Jenny? She had the power to mess with us big time.

No wonder Brad, who'd only been teaching at National Capital University for a year, got the big honor of being named the chief project leader by the client. No wonder I got dragged into a meeting that had zilch to do with me. It was all her plan; she had it all under control.

Professor Evans shot me a warning look, telling his assistant to get me out, but I shook them off hard.

Why was Professor Evans so desperate to get me out? Did he know about Jenny's plans? If he did, why kept me in the dark; why went along with her? What secret deal was there between the Evans family and the Taylor family? In a world run by big money, were people like us just meant to be looked down on?

Rage flared up inside me, like everyone else in the room vanished, leaving just Jenny and me in a silent showdown.

No way, I wouldn't lose. For Brad, for my love, I couldn't lose. So what if she had money; so what if she had power? We had our rights; we could choose what to do or not to do.

Jenny was still a master at playing dirty, as annoying as ever.

It was one thing to target me, but today she dragged Brad into it too. You could say her scheme this time was aimed straight at Brad. What did she want to do to Brad? What right did she have to mess with Brad? What was that thing she asked Brad to do back then? Was she here to cash in on that promise now?

In a flash, a million thoughts raced through my mind. After the initial shock, I was totally pissed.

Jenny didn't get love. If she did, she'd know love was a two-way street, not one-sided. True love was pure, no scheming or plotting.

Plus, true love was about wanting the best for the other person, not about forcefully taking what she wanted.

From this angle, Jenny had already lost from the get-go. Brad's feelings towards her had shifted from gratitude to mostly disgust, all thanks to her own actions.

I wanted to rush over and ask Jenny what the hell she was planning.

But just as I lifted my foot, Brad grabbed my wrist.

I looked at Brad, confused, only to see him holding back intense emotions, shaking his head.

Professor Evans somehow snuck up behind me and said in a low, serious voice, "I don't care what's got you all riled up, but chill out. Don't mess up the school's plans. Whatever it is, we can hash it out later."

His words were like a cold shower, snapping me back to reality.

I realized my weird behavior had already caught the eye of a few people around me.

Yeah, the beef between Jenny and me was personal; I couldn't let it screw up the school's project.

I squeezed Brad's hand back, pulled away, and took a step back. Instead of going back to my seat, I found a spot behind Brad and plopped down.

Professor Evans shot me a look, clearly not thrilled, but he didn't say anything else.

The meeting kicked off; Brad ran the show like a pro, not a single slip-up, like he wasn't the same guy who was just as shocked and pissed as me.

The client started off, talking about their big plans and design direction for the project, laying out the general framework.

Jenny, deep in her work, was surprisingly serious. She didn't even glance at Brad or me the whole time; she was all about the project materials, explaining everything in detail.

The meeting dragged on for two hours. I felt like a scared rabbit, on edge the whole time. I couldn't focus on what she was saying; I just watched her mouth move, my nerves stretched to the limit.

Finally, the meeting wrapped up with enthusiastic applause from both sides.

Everyone started gathering their stuff, getting ready to leave.

Brad looked back at me. When he saw me sitting quietly, he gave me a gentle smile before turning back to pack up his things.

Just when I thought this might have been a false alarm, something happened.

"Professor Evans, hold up a sec." Jenny's voice was soft but commanding, like she was the boss.

Brad froze, and my eyes instantly burned with anger.

I thought, 'Here it comes, finally!'

Jenny wouldn't miss such a golden opportunity!

"Is there something else, Ms. Taylor?" Professor Evans stopped mid-step, putting his materials back on the table.

Professor Evans, born into the old Evans family, naturally had a strong presence and sense of authority.

With just a few words, those who knew him could tell he was ticked off. But since Jenny was the client, and considering his own status, he politely held back his displeasure.

With a simple sentence, Jenny made everyone stop and sit back down. They were really puzzled.

As the client's rep, every word she said could seriously impact the collaboration. Unless it was something totally unreasonable, it was worth sitting down to discuss.

Jenny said, "This project is a big deal for the Taylor family over the next two years. My mom picked National Capital University from a bunch of universities, showing how much she values this place. To make sure we have smooth communication and achieve our shared dreams over the next two years, I have a request. I wonder if Professor Evans could agree to it?"
