Chapter 90 Never Set Foot

Honestly, if it weren't for wanting to be closer to my parents, my career would have been better after grad school at the Northern Institute of the Arts.

National Capital University was my backup, and I never thought it was a big deal. Otherwise, I wouldn't have ditched it for the Northern Institute of the Arts.

I never expected that just studying at National Capital University would make these high-society ladies so proud.

Maybe they thought anyone at National Capital University should be a big shot or rich, not someone like me.

They'd been judging me from the start, thinking I was just a pretty face who snagged Louis, not as good as their daughters, and unworthy of National Capital University or Louis.

Excellence and background weren't the same. To me, they were just jealous because I was better and prettier than their daughters.

Jealousy was ugly; it made people lose their grace.

"Jane studies art and has won awards. She had a guaranteed spot at the Northern Institute of the Arts but chose National Capital University to be closer to Sunhaven. She was the top scorer in her major's entrance exam," Louis said proudly, shutting them up.

Seeing their embarrassed faces didn't make me happy; it made me feel worse.

Today was the Anderson family banquet, and the last thing Louis's parents wanted was to offend guests. To them, I wasn't worth it.

Sure enough, Louis's parents looked displeased, their disdainful gazes cutting into me.

"So what if she got into National Capital University? She still can't afford anything decent. Louis, you bought Ms. Hanks's dress, didn't you? Girls these days are too vain," another lady said, shaking her head like I was a disgrace.

Megan glanced at me with disdain, making me furious.

That was a huge insult.

It was just a dress; it was not that I can't afford it. I thought clothes should be comfortable and appropriate, not necessarily expensive.

Louis had given me many luxury items, but I never accepted them. I valued his affection and sincerity, not his money.

Megan's family, by doing this, was actually disrespecting their own son.

I said, "Madam, you're mistaken. Poverty isn't a sin, and a life full of money isn't perfect. I've never accepted anything from Louis, and we take turns paying when we dine. Calling me vain is slander."

She didn't expect me to retort, and her disdainful snort made my anger rise.

I added, "But to be honest, this dress is Louis's. I wore it for his sake because I didn't know what to wear. Believe it or not, I never intended to wear this dress for free." I turned to Louis, "Louis, how much is this dress? I'll pay you back."

I took out my phone, opened the transfer page, and waited for Louis to tell me the price.

"The dress is a gift, so I don't want the money. Mom, ladies, Jane is the best girl in the world and not vain at all. She never cares about my money, and I never use gifts to disrespect her. I had to beg her to wear this dress. Your words insult her, and I'm very unhappy." Louis's smile faded, and his face tightened with anger. His upbringing stopped him from asking them to leave, but his cold gaze said it all.

"Louis, we've watched you grow up, and we're just worried you'll be deceived. Girls these days may look young and beautiful, but they can be very scheming. The Anderson family is wealthy and must be cautious." The woman's face was disgusting, and I couldn't understand what she gained by belittling me.

"Auntie, if you don't know the situation, please don't speak out of turn. This is my business, and it's not for outsiders to comment on." Louis's words were harsh, and everyone reluctantly fell silent, though their gazes at me were still hostile and disdainful.

I had no issues with these people, but seeing through Megan's intentions, they couldn't help but target me.

They were all Megan's accomplices.

I never coveted the Anderson family's wealth, and my willingness to give Louis a chance had nothing to do with his family background. When I met him, he was just a chubby boy who loved to laugh. After all these years, he was still the warm boy who followed me around.

My relationship with Louis was pure and untainted by any interests.

Even so, being baselessly criticized was very annoying.

"Two hundred thousand dollars, is that enough?" Out of patience, I shook off Louis's hand, didn't wait for his answer, and transferred two hundred thousand dollars to him before turning to leave.

I knew this meal wouldn't be pleasant, but I didn't expect it to be this bad.

Is there anything worse than being publicly judged and treated like a dog begging for scraps?

Fortunately, I wasn't too involved, and it was not too late to walk away now.

Megan shouted, "Louis, look at her attitude. She has no manners and still thinks she can get into the Anderson family? Dream on."

"Mom, stop it." Louis's angry roar was filled with despair, "She never wanted to be part of the Anderson family. It was your son who begged her to come. Do you know that?"

Louis probably knew that after this incident, there was no future for us.

I suddenly stopped, turned around, and met Megan's gaze. She had really pushed me too far.

I had been tolerating them, not because I was weak, but out of respect for Louis and his family.

But they really didn't deserve respect.

I said, "Mrs. Anderson, manners are for those who deserve them. I don't think my attitude is wrong. And for the record, I never cared about the Anderson family's prestige, nor did I ever dream of joining it. I overestimated human nature; otherwise, I wouldn't have come. Louis, your invitation put me in a difficult position. Sorry, I can't accompany you to the end. Goodbye."

I turned around, leaving their shocked faces behind, and walked away with firm steps.

Fortunately, I was clear-headed enough not to directly accept Louis's pursuit. Otherwise, the Anderson family would have been my grave.

I would never set foot here again.
