Chapter 57 The First Kiss
Brad laughed and started running, holding me up.
I clung to his neck, screaming in his ear.
Brad didn't say a word, just ran like crazy, dodging ghosts and all.
After what felt like forever, we saw the exit.
"We're out. Want to get down?" Brad asked, patting my face. Still freaked out, I held on tight. "No way, I'm staying up here."
Everyone burst out laughing. I opened my eyes and saw them all cracking up. Embarrassed, I quickly got down.
Turns out, everyone had already made it out and was laughing at my scaredy-cat reaction.
They were old classmates, so I didn't feel too bad and laughed with them.
I couldn't blame them; my reaction was pretty ridiculous, even to me.
Then I saw Daniel behind Brad, looking serious. He must've been the "ghost" following me!
I hadn't invited Daniel, but he insisted on coming. While everyone else played games, he stuck to me like glue. What was he thinking?
After a bit, we made our way to the RPG zone.
We were late, and all the good scripts were taken. The only one left was a fairy tale about the Rose Princess.
Everyone groaned.
Even though it was a script, it felt too childish. We wanted suspense or horror.
Some people sat down, refusing to play such a kiddie game.
I was bummed too.
I checked my phone; it was past ten. Maybe we should just grab some food.
"We're here, so why not play? Didn't we all dream of being princesses as kids? Who's in?" Amelia raised her hand first, eyes shining with determination.
With her leading, everyone remembered their childhood princess dreams and got interested. After a quick chat, we decided to play!
The guys were less excited. There was only one prince role; the rest were guards, cooks, or a short, chubby king.
Lillian said, what's wrong with being a guard? Riding a tall horse with a sword, protecting the princess. Only someone with great achievements could be a guard. Wasn't being a hero every boy's dream?
That got them. Which boy didn't want to be a hero growing up? So, the guys joined in too.
The script had ten characters, but we had more people, so some didn't get roles and asked the game organizers for help.
The owner, a slim young guy in his twenties, came over.
"No problem. We can add a few more guards. I'll get the costumes and props."
What seemed like a headache was solved in a second.
Next was drawing roles.
The Rose Princess fairy tale was one we girls had all read as kids. The plot was simple, and each character, including the princess and queen, didn't have much to do. The witch had the most scenes.
Amelia drew the queen, Lillian got the witch, and I ended up with the princess role.
The funniest part? Daniel drew the beaten-up little servant boy. I couldn't stop laughing.
I didn't know who got the cook, but if I found out, I'd tell them to give the servant boy a good whack.
Brad was by the window, smiling at me.
He was a few years older than us. If it weren't for my birthday, he wouldn't be hanging out with us kids. With his classy demeanor, he usually wouldn't play these silly games.
"Brad, what role did you get?" I asked, but Daniel stepped in front of me like he wanted to say something. I ignored him and ran to Brad.
Brad showed me his paper, and my face turned red.
It said "Prince."
In the fairy tale, the prince wakes the princess with a kiss, and they live happily ever after.
So, Brad and I had a kissing scene. This was too much.
"Brad, it's just a game. We don't have to really kiss, right?" I whispered.
This was my first kiss; I didn't want to lose it to a game.
Brad lifted my chin, making me look at him. His eyes were full of amusement. "Does Jane want a real kiss?"
That voice could drive anyone crazy.
I shook off his hand and covered my burning face, mumbling, "We'll fake it."
The game started quickly, and everyone took their positions. I only had two scenes: pricking my finger on a spindle and falling asleep, then lying in bed waiting for the prince to wake me with a kiss.
After the first scene, I lay in bed, waiting for the prince.
But he never came. I was getting anxious.
The room was warm, with a faint scent of roses. The sunlight was cozy. I actually fell asleep.
Suddenly, I smelled a familiar pine scent. I opened my eyes to see a face right in front of me.
I screamed and tried to get up, but ended up bumping into those slightly pursed lips.
The room went silent.
I could only hear my heart pounding and a buzzing in my head.
It was over. We really kissed.
I fell back onto the bed, and Brad quickly stood up, turning his face slightly. From behind, I could see his red earlobes.
Brad was blushing.
My face started to heat up, and the atmosphere got super awkward.
"Why were you so close?" I growled in embarrassment.
"Wasn't it supposed to be a fake kiss? I was trying to get the angle right, and you woke up. Before I knew it, you kissed me. Seriously, I..." Brad, a grown man, was acting like I had totally kissed him first.
How could I live with this!
My face turned even redder, and it felt like a thousand bees were buzzing in my head.
"Sorry, Brad. I was half-asleep and made a mistake."
I had actually forced a kiss on Brad.
I just wanted to disappear. What a mess!
"Jane, that was my first kiss." Even though I apologized, Brad wouldn't let it go, looking all aggrieved.
I was furious.
