Chapter 518 Truly a Dog
"Do you eat spicy food?" Adam asked me seriously, holding the menu between his fingers.
"Yes."
Adam cheered and said he finally found someone who shared his taste. "Two orders of spicy beef spaghetti. That's it, make it quick."
The owner left with a smile, and as he walked away, he seemed to exchange a secret glance with Adam.
I looked at the owner, then at Adam, sensing there was a secret between them that I wasn't aware of.
Adam noticed I had caught their little interaction and scratched the back of his head awkwardly, smiling sheepishly. "I've been here a few times. Today they have a promotion: bring your girlfriend and get 50% off. I'm just trying to save some money, with no other intentions. Don't get me wrong. As long as you don't expose us, I can save half the money. The owner looked at me like that because I've always come alone before, never with a girlfriend. He was a bit suspicious when I suddenly brought one today."
Adam was still young; he couldn't even lie convincingly.
"Didn't we agree that I would treat you?"
Adam scratched his head cutely. "What? It's hard to earn money. The more we save, the more we can eat."
"First, I'm not that poor; I can afford a few meals of beef spaghetti. Second, I'm not your girlfriend, so we don't qualify for the discount. So, we can't save any money."
Adam and I had only spoken a few times since we met; we weren't that familiar.
But for some reason, from the moment I sat here, there was a natural ease between us, making our communication particularly smooth, even allowing for some light-hearted jokes.
Being with Adam was very relaxing.
And Adam, he kept glancing at me. How to describe that look? It was as if we had known each other for a long time.
"By the way, are you the same age as Jane? Then you must be younger than me. Keep your voice down. As long as you don't say anything and I don't say anything, the owner won't realize we're not a couple. Let's save the money first."
"Here comes the beef spaghetti, and here's a side dish. To bless you both, here's a special dessert from our store. Wishing you two a sweet and happy time."
I had tasted the complimentary dessert somewhere else before, and it was indeed delicious.
But the owner's blessing made me a bit embarrassed. Despite my efforts to act nonchalant, I couldn't help but blush.
To save half the meal cost, the sacrifice was quite significant.
"Try it; their food is excellent," Adam said, gentlemanly serving me some food.
I didn't hold back and started eating heartily.
The training was semi-closed, with three meals a day in the cafeteria. The food was good but a bit bland. After a few days, I craved something with a stronger flavor.
The food Adam ordered today was just to my taste.
I focused on eating while Adam talked as he ate. He looked tall and thin, seemingly hard to approach, but he was actually quite easygoing, knowledgeable, and very humorous. An ordinary story became particularly amusing when he told it.
The meal ended quickly, and the owner came to settle the bill—$65, indeed half the price.
Pretending to be his girlfriend this time was quite worth it.
After the meal, it was still early. Remembering my purpose for coming out, I wanted to say goodbye and head back.
Unexpectedly, he was very insistent. He said he had to take me back to where he picked me up from, fearing I might get lost or be kidnapped.
I knew he was talking nonsense, but he had a point. I couldn't argue with him, so I let him take me back to the training center entrance.
I stood at the gate, waving goodbye to him. He smiled and waved back before turning and walking away.
After he left, I went to the supermarket, bought two packs of sanitary pads, and returned to the dorm.
"That handsome guy is your boyfriend, right? He's really good-looking."
I was stunned for a moment, then quickly realized Aurelia was talking about Adam.
But we had been quite discreet both going out and coming back. How did Aurelia know?
"He is good-looking. Do you like him? Should I introduce you? But I can't guarantee he'll agree."
Aurelia blushed at my words.
After taking a shower at night, I lay in bed and suddenly realized I had spent over two hours with Adam, someone I hadn't even had a proper conversation with before. We not only ate but also chatted and joked, having a great time.
This made me subconsciously recall what Jane had told me more than once. She said Adam specially looked at me and that something would definitely happen between us in the future.
I had confidently told her it was impossible.
Now, I thought I should be more restrained in the future. After Ryan, I wasn't ready to start a new relationship.
The training was extended from fifteen to twenty-one days, and I had to use my hard-earned phone call to tell Jane I would be delayed in returning.
Jane was a bit disappointed but didn't say much. Instead, she encouraged me to hang in there and promised to treat me to a big meal when I got back.
She also told me something about Ryan.
He got engaged to Grace, and the ceremony was grand. Strangely, on the night of the engagement, he got drunk and came to Jane's place looking for me.
Jane told him I no longer lived there, but he shamelessly shouted my name downstairs, asking me to come down and see him.
As a result, the neighbors called the community security, and he was dragged away by two tall security guards and blacklisted from the community.
"Amelia, don't you think Ryan is pathetic? He didn't cherish you when you were good to him, but now that you don't want him, he clings to you like a dog."
I didn't know what to say.
Calling him a dog was actually an insult to my five years of feelings.
But his behavior proved he was exactly as Jane described.
I guess Grace wasn't as perfect as he had hoped, which is why he kept thinking of me.
I heard Grace's family was quite wealthy. Their engagement probably had something to do with that.
It's funny; after five years of dating Ryan, the day we discussed marriage was the first time I met his parents.
