Chapter 444 Rescue

So, if Elliot was tricked just like me, maybe we could team up and figure out a way to get out of here together.

I just hoped Elliot wasn't a bad guy and wouldn't rat me out.

My mind was racing, and I was super nervous. I tried to eat a bit, but I was shaking so much I could barely swallow.

"The city kids aren't used to our simple food. Honey, why don't you get her some goat milk? We can't let her go hungry," Declan said to his wife.

Dinner finally ended. There wasn't much to do, so everyone just gathered around to watch TV. Declan's wife brought me a chair with a thick cushion. "Sit here, it's comfy. The show's about to start."

The chair was the perfect height, and the cushion was really soft. It was actually pretty comfortable.

But I couldn't relax. My mind kept spinning with thoughts of being sold.

When no one was looking, I tried to resend the message to Brad, hoping it would go through this time.

No luck. The signal up here was awful. If I ever get out of here, I'm definitely complaining to the service provider.

When the TV show switched episodes, Elliot noticed I was zoning out and suggested I go to bed.

Declan's wife led me to a small room at the back of the house. It had three walls and a door, but no windows. There was a small bed with a thick mattress and a big blanket, so it shouldn't be too cold.

Using the dim light from the kitchen, I brushed my teeth, washed my face, and wiped my feet with wet wipes before climbing into bed.

In these rough conditions, just being able to wash my face felt like a luxury. Who knew if I'd get to do it again tomorrow?

During dinner, Declan's wife had mentioned that mountain folks weren't too fussy about things.

She watched me get into bed, turned off the light, and closed the door. I heard her mutter, "Why is she so particular?"

I was too tired to think about what she meant. I was just focused on listening for any sounds.

Soon, everything outside went completely silent, like the calm before a storm.

I felt drowsy, but the silence was so eerie it made me sweat.

I resent those two messages over a dozen times, and they finally went through. My eyes were dry from staring, but still no reply from Brad.

It was almost midnight. I clutched my phone, too scared to sleep, but I was so tired my brain felt foggy.

At 12:10 AM, my phone suddenly rang with a video call request, snapping me out of my daze."Brad, I'm scared," I whispered, setting my phone to the lowest volume, my voice shaky with tears.

Brad gave me a gentle smile. "Don't worry, sweetheart. Elliot's not a trafficker; he won't sell you."

"But what if Declan is? Then we're both stuck."

Brad chuckled softly, trying to hold back a laugh. "It's okay, just go to sleep. I'll stay with you."

"Promise you won't hang up until I fall asleep?"

"Promise."

I was so exhausted, I didn't even think about how tired Brad looked. His voice lulled me to sleep.

Maybe it was because Brad was there, but I slept soundly without any nightmares.

My internal alarm woke me up at 6 AM sharp.

I opened my eyes to the dark ceiling, the events of last night replaying in my mind. I checked my clothes under the blanket and sighed in relief, my heart still racing.

I pulled myself together and opened the door. Declan's wife was quietly making breakfast in the kitchen. She smiled when she saw me. "You're up. There's hot water in the basin over there. Freshen up and join us for breakfast."

As soon as she mentioned food, my stomach growled.

I pushed my questions aside and used the hot water to wash my face and brush my teeth.

Just as breakfast was ready and I was about to ask where Elliot was, the kitchen door opened, and four men walked in.

Leading them was Brad. He stood a few feet away, looking at me with those gentle eyes.

I stood there, holding a bowl of porridge, completely stunned.

Brad had come to rescue me. How did he get here so fast?

I felt like crying!

"What's the matter? Too happy to think straight?" Elliot slipped in behind Brad, grabbed a piece of bread from the table, and stuffed it into his mouth. With his other hand, he picked up a crunchy pickle and bit into it. "So good, the cucumber is so crisp."

Declan's wife beamed at the compliment. "If you like it, eat more. Jane, is this your husband? He got here a while ago but didn't want to wake you. Not many young men care so much about their wives these days. You're very lucky."

I wiped the tears from my eyes, thinking, yes, I really was this lucky.

Brad's arrival put my mind at ease. I knew I wasn't going to be sold, and my mood lifted.

As long as Brad was around, I was happy.

I ate a lot for breakfast, making up for the meal I missed last night.

Seeing how much I was enjoying the food, Declan and his wife kept apologizing for the previous night's dinner, saying it wasn't up to par and they were sorry I went hungry. They seemed genuinely regretful.

I apologized too, saying it was fine, I wasn't hungry last night, and it wasn't because of the food. Everything was delicious.
