Chapter 427 Conspiracy
I really wasn't feeling the vibe in that place. I told Mindy about it and then just started wandering around the club by myself. I quickly found a quiet corner, and pulled out my phone to check out the info I had snapped pictures of.
This spot had to be the most out-of-the-way place in the whole club. I sat there for a good half hour without even seeing a waiter.
Behind me was this massive tree, big enough for a bunch of people to wrap their arms around. Its thick branches hung down, totally hiding me. As long as I stayed put, no one would see me.
Elliot was a real whiz in the field. The lab had only been up and running for a month, and he had already come up with several formulas, just waiting to gather the ingredients for testing.
One of the formulas used three types of agents: plants, minerals, and chemicals, and it included an ancient recipe, making it super valuable for research. The plant and mineral parts were my contribution, while the chemical agents were Elliot's.
Elliot and I came to Silverbrook City to find a missing mineral for this formula.
Elliot's report broke down each component of the formula in detail, from its form and properties to its role in color change and retention. It was all explained very thoroughly and professionally.
I read through it carefully, not wanting to miss a single word.
I was deep into my reading when I suddenly heard voices. To avoid being noticed, I held my breath.
The voices belonged to a man and a woman. My hiding spot was so good they didn't see me.
Thinking they were just a couple looking for some privacy, I quickly put my phone on silent to avoid interrupting them.
Even though they were whispering, I could hear them clearly since they were so close.
To my shock, the man and woman were plotting to harm someone.
"He's very cautious. What if we get caught?" The man sounded hesitant, like he wasn't used to doing bad stuff.
The woman was very assertive, and from her voice, she didn't sound young. She cut him off impatiently, her tone low and irritated, "Shut up. Just do as you're told. If you can't even handle this small task, what good are you? You won't have to face the consequences if we get caught, so what are you worried about?"
"But..." The man tried to argue, but the woman didn't let him.
"But what? Just go. If you succeed, you'll be heavily rewarded, and you'll never have to serve anyone again. If you fail, you know the consequences."
The man was silent for a moment, then nodded and walked away with heavy steps.
The woman waited for a bit, and seeing no one else around, went in the opposite direction.
I stepped out from behind the tree. Because of the angle and lighting, I only caught a glimpse of the man's back as he walked away. He was tall, thin, and slightly hunched.
I patted my chest in relief, having accidentally overheard such an important conversation. Luckily, no one knew.
Man, rich families sure had their fair share of secrets. Surviving in those circles must be a real challenge.
With both of them gone, I felt a bit uneasy. I didn't want to accidentally overhear any more secrets, so I put my phone away and kept wandering around.
The club's design was pretty unique, like a maze with winding paths. Unless I reached the end, I would never know where the path led, and I couldn't see the specific direction of the road.
Both gatherings were on the first floor. Looking at the lights above, some bright and some dim, I felt a pull to go up and explore.
After wandering for a while, I finally found the stairs. Just as I reached the middle landing, a man suddenly rushed down from upstairs. With his head down, I couldn't see his face. He brushed past me in a hurry without even apologizing and quickly disappeared, like he was fleeing after doing something bad.
I touched my shoulder where he bumped into me. It didn't hurt, so I gave up the idea of chasing after him for an explanation. Besides, he was in such a hurry that he must have already run far away, making it impossible to catch up.
The second floor had similar facilities to the first, but the atmosphere was more varied. The doors of dozens of large private rooms, integrating dining, drinking, and entertainment, were tightly closed.
Even the best scenery lost its charm after a while.
After walking around for a bit, I got tired, grabbed a glass of juice, and sat on a small sofa in the loft to rest.
After drinking half a glass of juice, I felt increasingly bored. Rather than wasting time here, I might as well go back and study the formula carefully. I took out my phone to let Mindy know I wanted to leave.
Just as I unlocked my phone, Mindy's call came through.
"Jane, where did you run off to? I've been looking for you everywhere," Mindy complained playfully.
Love really did have a magical power, turning someone high and mighty into someone gentle and adorable.
I smiled, touching my earlobe. If Mindy wanted to know where I was, she could have just called me. There was no need for her to look for me herself.
"I'm in the loft on the second floor. I was just about to tell you that I want to leave." I glanced at my watch; it was already past ten o'clock, definitely time to go.
"No, just a moment. This will be over soon, and we can leave together. It's too late to call a cab, and it's not safe. I don't feel comfortable with you going alone."
I looked at the dark night outside. It indeed wasn't safe to walk alone this late, so I decided to wait.
"Alright, call me when it's over." I sat back down. This place was relatively quiet, a good spot to wait.
I hung up the phone and, glancing up unintentionally, saw a few figures flash by in the opposite loft. The tallest one had a half-turned face, and I recognized his build and profile instantly.
It was Brad!
He was here too!
I didn't have time to think; my legs were already in motion.
