Chapter 277 Mrs. Evans
Jenny's face went all red and flustered.
Bam! The truth was out!
I knew it, no way Brad would ever betray me!
Jenny's lie got busted right there, and she looked super embarrassed. She shot Brad a look that could kill, tears welling up like he did her dirty.
Man, this chick was annoying.
She was the one spouting nonsense, but she still acted all innocent and wronged.
But, gotta admit, her fragile act could make anyone feel bad for her. If I were a dude, I might fall for that damsel-in-distress vibe.
She just didn't get it yet—Brad wasn't the guy she thought he was. And she sure didn't expect her lie to get called out by him right in front of me, leaving her with zero dignity.
Just as I thought, she made the whole thing up.
Watching Jenny's drama, I couldn't wrap my head around why a good girl like her would wanna be someone’s side chick, knowing he had a girlfriend.
So annoying.
Honestly, I was kinda mad at Brad too. It’s not like I wouldn’t let him visit Jenny. I even suggested going to the hospital with him a few times, but he always said we’d done enough and visiting too much might give her the wrong idea. He just wouldn’t budge.
But here he was, sneaking off to this party with her behind my back.
I figured he had his reasons, but still, he came without telling me. Shouldn't I be pissed? And that time at the supermarket, was it really just a coincidence?
Doubt’s like a weed—once it’s planted, it grows wild. Even though I tried to squash it, I still needed answers. I needed Brad to help me kill this doubt before it messed up our relationship.
I trusted him, but he had to give me a reason to keep trusting him.
Seeing me stay quiet, Brad smiled and pulled me into a hug. "Jenny said she had a friend here who invited her to hang out. The people looking after her had to leave, so she called me for help, that’s all."
So, he was here just for Jenny, not for Larry’s party.
This was getting juicy.
'Brad, we’re gonna have a serious talk when we get home. This can’t keep going; it’s driving me nuts.' I thought.
But not now.
"Friend?" I eyed Jenny skeptically. "Did you find your friend? Need help?"
Jenny, caught in her lie, awkwardly laughed and said, "My friend’s kinda flaky. I just got here and he already called to say he had to leave early."
She added all innocent-like, "I planned for my friend to take me back. Now, I’ll have to trouble Brad to take me home. Brad’s so busy, I feel bad about it."
Knowing he’s busy but still dragging him here? So intentional. Gross.
I frowned, annoyed. Not only did she not mention bringing her here, but now she also wanted him to take her back. She called Brad’s name so casually. Anyone who didn’t know might think they had something going on.
Was she trying to make me misunderstand, while planning to make the whole world misunderstand too?
Brad, clearly annoyed, didn't say a word to her but gave my hand a little squeeze, leaving me to handle the mess.
I was fuming.
"Alright, since you saved Brad's life, it's our duty to take care of you. Since this trip was a bust, Brad and I will take you back. By the way, since the people looking after you are so unreliable, how about we hire two new ones for you? Last time at the rehab center, the nurse mentioned they have professional caregivers who handle everything—meals, massages, reading to you, the whole nine yards. How about it, Jenny? Want to consider it? We'll cover the cost."
"Thanks, but no need for now. I'll call them and see if they're done with their business. If it's convenient, I'll have them come pick me up, so as not to trouble Brad."
She pulled out her phone and dialed a number.
The call was answered quickly. After a few moments of conversation, Jenny's chest heaved a few times, then she told us we didn't need to take her back; someone would come to pick her up.
Even so, Brad and I still walked her to the hotel entrance. We waited until her ride showed up and handed her over personally before heading back inside.
When we got back to the hall, Larry was looking for me. Seeing Brad and me come in together, he didn't seem surprised and just told me to hurry up and follow him. Brad asked what Larry wanted with me.
Larry said his wife had arrived and wanted to meet me.
This news hit me out of nowhere, and I got super nervous, instinctively hiding behind Brad.
In my mind, meeting the mentor's wife should be done with proper prep and carefully chosen gifts to show respect.
"What? You don't want to meet her?" Larry asked, clearly annoyed.
I was so startled I trembled and quickly answered, "No, it's just that meeting so suddenly, I didn't have time to prepare a gift, and I'm not dressed formally enough."
Larry patted my head, saying I overthink things all the time, and led the way deeper into the hall. Brad and I hurried to follow.
"None of what you're worried about will happen. You'll know when you meet her; you'll definitely like her," Brad whispered.
"The point is whether Mrs. Evans will like me."
"That depends on your performance. After all, you're going to marry Mrs. Evans' most prized student. This won't be an easy hurdle to pass," Brad said smugly, raising his chin.
Blushing, I glared at him sideways, "Who wants to marry you? Don't talk nonsense."
"I didn't mention any names. Why is your face so red?" Brad teased me again.
I was both embarrassed and angry, but with Larry present, I couldn't retort and could only pinch him.
Brad chuckled happily, his voice low and pleasant, tugging at my heartstrings.
My earlier annoyance seemed to be fading a bit. No, it couldn't fade; I still needed to question him when we got back.
Larry led us to the largest, sunniest room on the second floor.
"Dear, I've brought Jane and Brad over."
Larry's eyes softened instantly when he saw the figure bathed in sunlight.
