Chapter 222: White Hair

"Yo, Benjamin, I've seen your whole love saga. So, tell me straight up, do you really love Mia, or are you just scared she dumped you first? Or maybe you're just clinging to those five years and the feelings you think you have? Spill it, man, what do you actually care about?"

Benjamin froze for a sec, then leaned back against the tree, deep in thought. His tall frame looked like it was carved out of stone.

Despair, like melting ice, filled Benjamin's eyes, drowning everything.

Before this, Benjamin was probably used to soaking up Mia's love and devotion, never thinking about their future. He never saw her as part of his plans; she was just an accessory. As long as she was around, nothing else mattered.

Now he finally got it—Mia was her own person with her own feelings. She felt pain and left, but it was too late to fix things.

"Look, you can't even figure out your own feelings. How can you make Mia feel loved? You and her, there's no future. For five years, she loved you without regret. She never owed you anything. If there's any debt, it's you who owe her.

Mia's been through hell for you, and you only noticed once. Do you know how much pain she went through alone? Think about it, if love only brings pain and darkness, would you still want it?

I believe you love her, or you wouldn't be stuck on her for so long. But so what if you love her? You can't give her a future, not even a home. How can you keep her? Keeping her means she'll be a lover scorned by everyone. Is that your idea of love?"

Yancy sneered, his gaze slicing through Benjamin like a knife. If looks could kill, Benjamin would be a skeleton by now.

Yancy, who seemed so pure and innocent, had this intimidating vibe. In front of Benjamin, he didn't just hold his ground; he dominated.

He looked like a wolf king protecting its cub, with Mia being the cub he fiercely guarded.

Benjamin's already grim face turned even grayer. He stared blankly ahead, looking completely drained. Leaning against the tree, he looked like a withered vine, lifeless and pitiful.

But this was all on him. No one else to blame, no one could help him. He deserved it.

"But I don't want to lose Mia. My biggest wish is to have her by my side, forever. If she leaves, what will I do? What will I do?"

Benjamin clutched his head in agony, his voice like a dying beast's wail.

Even now, Benjamin hadn't said he'd give up everything for Mia. If he had, I believed Mia would go with him, no matter the cost.

But Benjamin didn't.

Even though he said nothing, I knew that between Mia and his family, he chose his family.

This choice left me super disappointed and made Yancy furious and disdainful.

Mia must've figured it out, which was why she bailed on him.

Out of everyone, Mia saw things the clearest.

"Face the facts and let Mia live her life." I glanced up at my apartment window, where the curtains swayed a bit, showing someone had just left. "When she got humiliated, if you had just stood up for her, even just yelled at those two women, or called her later to comfort her, her heart wouldn't have turned so cold. This is all on you, and you gotta deal with the fallout."

I pulled Yancy away, with Adam tagging along behind us.

I’d said my piece. What Benjamin would do next was anyone's guess, but the end of his and Mia's love story was already written.

Benjamin suddenly lifted his head, pointing at Yancy, and shouted, "Why does he get a shot? Do you even know who he is? He's the eldest grandson of the Bailey family, also stuck with family duties. Can Mia be happy with him? It's just the same mess all over again. The Baileys are way more powerful than us Davises."

I didn't have time for Benjamin's freak-out. Shocked, I turned to look at Yancy beside me. Handsome, clear-eyed, tall, and casually dressed, this sunny dude was actually the future head of the Bailey family. Totally unexpected.

If being with Yancy would hurt Mia again, she might really want to die. I couldn't risk that.

"Yancy, is that true?"

Yancy smiled, looking chill. He glanced at Benjamin with obvious disdain.

Benjamin's face twisted, his cheek muscles twitching like crazy. Being looked down on by a younger guy was clearly a tough pill to swallow, especially since this guy was a serious rival.

"Jane, yeah, I'm the eldest grandson of the Bailey family, but that doesn't mess with my feelings for Mia. Has Benjamin ever seen a Bailey family member divorce and remarry? Nope, 'cause the Bailey family rule is to marry someone you love and never regret it. The Bailey family only has widows, not divorcees. Today, I swear here that I, Yancy, will only love one woman and marry one wife in my lifetime, and I will never let her down."

Yancy's words were solid and sincere, his face serious and earnest, moving anyone who heard them.

Benjamin's face changed instantly, his eyes narrowing and suddenly lighting up as he stared intently behind me.

I didn't need to look to know that Mia had come down.

"Jane, you're back. Why aren't you going upstairs?"

Before I could respond, Benjamin stepped forward, pulling Mia into his arms. "Mia, I knew you couldn't stay away from me. I'm sorry, it's all my fault. Come back with me. I'll treat you better and never let you suffer again."

"Let go of her."

Mia, Yancy, and I spoke in unison.

Yancy glared at Benjamin angrily, grabbing his wrist and squeezing hard. Benjamin, unable to bear the pain, loosened his grip, and Mia's wrist fell into Yancy's hand.

He gently rubbed Mia's wrist, which bore the marks of Benjamin's grip, and blew on it tenderly. "Does it hurt? You and Jane go upstairs first. I'll be there in a moment."

Mia's eyes reddened, and tears slid down her cheeks as she softly agreed.
