Chapter 344 Role Playing
I was thinking, "This rule is kinda messed up, right? What if someone pulls the bathroom card and has to clean up after everyone else? That's just cruel."
What really ticked me off was that Brad and I spent over an hour getting all dolled up, and it was all for nothing. I was so mad I wanted to deck him.
Even though I was super annoyed, I still threw on my fancy clothes and went. If anything really crossed the line, I'd handle it right then and there.
The Evans family's shindig was way fancier than Jenny's, from the venue to the decor, and even the guests. I didn't know most of them, but you could tell just by looking at them that they were in a whole different league.
As soon as we got out of the car, we spotted Rafael, dressed like a peacock, greeting guests at the door. His smile was wide but looked totally fake, with a hint of irritation.
Rafael was probably daydreaming about hanging out with his buddies. He had zero patience for standing there like a statue, repeating the same greetings over and over.
Just from Rafael's annoyed expression, it was obvious someone at home had forced him to stand there and play nice.
When he saw us, Rafael's eyes lit up, and he practically ran over to us, ditching the couple he was talking to.
Seeing his ridiculous outfit, I really wanted to roast him, but since we weren't that tight, I held back. Better not to stir the pot.
Rafael said, "Brad, Jane, you guys made it!"
After chatting with Brad for a bit, Rafael moved to my side, threw his arm around my shoulder, and started talking to me. He was so close I could smell his rose-scented cologne.
Honestly, I didn't know much about men's cologne, but weren't they supposed to wear something like aftershave? Why did Rafael go for a rose scent? I couldn't figure it out.
Rafael eagerly led us into the hotel lobby. Under the curious and envious stares of the high-society crowd, we headed to the area where we'd draw our roles.
This family was loaded; even the box holding the role cards looked super fancy.
Before I reached into the box, Brad and I exchanged a look and gave each other a pep talk. We had talked about it in the car; I hoped to draw Snow White and he would get the prince who wakes her with a kiss.
But nope, I pulled the beautiful but evil queen from Snow White, and Brad got one of the seven dwarfs.
We were floored.
What made it worse was that the costume for Brad's role was hideous; the mask was a goofy, grinning face, which was just ridiculous.
In contrast, my costume was stunning—a black gown that bared my shoulders, with a long, intricate skirt that covered me completely. The design at the waist made my waistline subtly visible, mysterious and sexy. The mask was simple, just a feathered eye mask, with a forehead ornament that sparkled under the lights.
It was the most revealing dress I'd ever worn, making Brad frown deeply.
After getting dressed by the staff, we came out. Rafael was laughing so hard he was holding his stomach, totally ungraceful. A bunch of already-costumed people around us were laughing too.
What were they laughing at? Of course, Brad's outfit.
Brad had a super steady personality, and the dwarf role didn't suit him at all. The mask, which made it impossible to tell who he was, turned Brad into a laughingstock.
I couldn't see Brad's expression through the mask, but I could imagine how furious he was.
Rafael said, "Handsome people look good in anything. Come on, Brad, let's take a selfie and show off."
Rafael stifled his laughter, took out his phone, opened a Facebook group, and put his arm around Brad's shoulder for a selfie.
But who was Brad? Would he let Rafael get his way so easily? No way. Such a photo would wreck his image.
As Rafael extended two fingers to pose, Brad seized the moment, pulled off his mask, slapped it on Rafael's face, quickly stepped back, and snapped the photo.
Seeing his own photo posted in the group, Rafael was stunned. After a moment of frantic shouting, he quickly deleted it, but a bunch of people had already seen it. Under the deleted message, there were rapid comments like LOL, Shocked, and Do it again.
"Brad, why'd you mess with me?" Rafael took off the mask, trying to put it back on Brad. "You're going to make me look like a fool! How am I supposed to keep my reputation after this?"
