Chapter 31 Secrets
Following the sound, I slowed down and crept closer.
I was glad I wore these shoes today; if they found me, I might be toast.
On the right side of the rose wall, there was a small, deep flower corridor ending in an abandoned little house, supposedly a storage room for the agricultural institute.
At the end of the corridor, two people were tightly embracing and passionately kissing.
The guy's hands were all over, and the woman was pulling at his shirt.
The atmosphere was so heated, even the cool autumn breeze felt warm.
The lights were still on, and in the dim light, I finally saw who it was. I broke out in a cold sweat and almost screamed.
It was Zoe!
She was making out with a male classmate in a white shirt. Given the heat of the moment, it was clear what would happen next.
I covered my mouth, afraid to make a sound and alert them. The consequences would be unimaginable.
Shocked, I ran away immediately.
I ran straight into the graduate school building, still trying to figure out Zoe's relationship with that guy and when they hooked up.
If they just met, Zoe was really open-minded. No wonder she could make Daniel fall for her so easily.
But their whispers and natural movements suggested they had known each other for a long time.
If that's the case, Zoe's visit to the Northern Institute of the Arts might have other motives. Did Daniel know?
I felt heavy-hearted.
I thought of all the pampering and indulgence Daniel had shown Zoe, how many times he put me in awkward situations for her, his struggles with Hugh to be with her, and his vow to marry her.
If Daniel, who cherished Zoe like a treasure, saw this scene, how would he feel?
Daniel would go crazy.
Getting betrayed like that would drive anyone mad.
Zoe was too greedy. Even with a boyfriend like Daniel who adored her, she still wanted to date multiple men. People's hearts are truly unpredictable.
"Why are you sneaking around?" Brad's voice suddenly appeared behind me, scaring me into quickly covering his mouth and pushing him back into the building.
Brad, not knowing what was happening, let me push him, even holding my arm to keep me from falling, while his eyes kept darting around.
It wasn't until we were in the art studio that I let go of his mouth.
And Brad, he actually blushed, with flames flickering in his dark eyes.
Only then did I realize how ambiguous my actions with Brad had been.
The studio was large, and I stood at the door like an idiot, clenching my right hand tightly, Brad's warmth lingering in my palm.
Fortunately, Matthew Brown came back from the restroom, saving me from my embarrassment.
I forced myself to forget everything that had just happened, carefully placing my draft on the table, and explained my design concept and the best effect I wanted to achieve.
Brad listened intently, his eyes dark and focused.
"Wow, Jane, you're a genius. How'd you come up with such a great idea?" Matthew exclaimed.
I grinned proudly, and Brad looked at me with admiration. "She's always been outstanding since she was young."
I worked so hard for Daniel, but he never noticed. Why could Brad see it, but Daniel couldn't?
It all came down to a lack of sincerity.
By the time we finished discussing my draft, it was almost eleven, and the dorm was about to close. The campus was silent.
The graduate school was a bit far from our main campus, and Brad insisted on walking me back, taking the path by the rose wall.
Passing by the small flower corridor, I casually looked around for the cheating couple, but they were long gone.
"Jane, why are you acting so sneaky tonight? Hiding something?" Brad asked.
I rolled my eyes at him, took a few running steps, and jumped onto his back, playfully pounding his shoulders. Brad laughed heartily.
He carried me, walking on the quiet paths of the Northern Institute of the Arts campus before midnight.
It felt like childhood when I got tired, and Brad would carry me home, step by step, under the setting sun.
"Brad, have you seen Zoe these past few days?" I lay on his back, pinching his ears and blowing into them.
Brad stiffened, his voice a bit unsteady. "Why would I see Zoe? Taking care of you is exhausting enough; I don't have time for her."
His words were music to my ears.
"She's Daniel's future wife. Should I introduce her to you?" I climbed up a bit more and saw Brad's skin turn red from his ears to his neck.
I might be so heavy that Brad was sweating. Looks like I needed to lose weight.
"I only care about my future wife, not interested in someone else's," Brad added.
"Brad, where's your future wife? Do I know her?" I asked.
Brad smiled, "You know her very well."
"What? Who is it? Is it one of my classmates?" I got excited and climbed up again, making Brad shout, "Be careful, what if you fall?"
All the way, I tried to get Brad to reveal who he liked, but he only said, "You'll know in the future."
Fine, knowing in the future was good too. At least I could have Brad to myself for a while longer.
Back in bed, I tossed and turned, unable to sleep.
The scene I had just witnessed made me feel uneasy. I was torn between playing dumb and letting Daniel live in his fantasy world or spilling the beans.
I thought about it for a long time but couldn't come to a conclusion, eventually thinking myself to sleep.
Even the next morning, I still couldn't make up my mind.
This matter left me distracted for two days, not even noticing Brad standing in front of me for a long time.
"Jane, what are you thinking about so deeply?" Brad asked.
I looked up, startled, to see Brad raising an eyebrow at me, a teasing smile on his lips.
He was backlit, his chiseled features in the shadows, like the most perfect sculpture, too handsome.
