Chapter 396 Three Days
"Got an idea," I said, giving Rachel a wink.
"Awesome, spill it," Rachel leaned in, like she was sharing some top-secret info. "What's the plan?"
"Just stick to him, you know?" I said.
Rachel thought for a sec, then her face lit up like she just had a lightbulb moment. "Great idea. When Daniel gets back, I'll be glued to him 24/7. If that doesn't work, I'll find a way to sleep with him. Let's see him try to escape then. No way I'm letting Daniel slip away."
I thought, 'That's the spirit!'
Wait a minute! Daniel went out? He better be back in time for the three-day meeting with Professor Evans. Brad's not just my boyfriend, he's Daniel's family too.
"Where did Daniel go?" I asked.
"Isn't it for..." Rachel started, then clammed up, covering her mouth and blinking like she just remembered something. "He didn't tell me, but he won't be gone long."
Really? From the way Rachel was acting, it was clear she knew where Daniel went but didn't want to spill the beans. Probably because Daniel told her not to.
No matter how much I pressed, Rachel kept saying she didn't know, wasn't sure, or that Daniel hadn't told her. When I pushed too hard, she put down her fork, made some excuse about having something to do, and bolted.
Rachel's sudden appearance and quick exit left me feeling uneasy. I kept wondering if his leave had anything to do with Brad.
Even after I finished eating, I couldn't shake it off, so I went to find Professor Evans.
I was expecting Professor Evans to give me some reassurance, so I could relax and wait until our three-day appointment.
When I got to Professor Evans's office, there was just a senior working at the computer, no sign of the professor.
This senior was into graphic design and super talented. He'd won a bunch of awards and was rumored to be staying on to teach at the university. Design and art were pretty close, so we'd worked together on projects before. He was straightforward and honest, a good guy.
"Hey, do you know where Professor Evans went?" I asked, feeling anxious.
The senior looked up and gave me a warm smile, waving me over. "You actually came. Professor Evans is pretty sharp."
Professor Evans knew I'd come and had someone waiting for me. Could Daniel's trip be related to Brad?
What was going on? Why were they keeping me in the dark?
Could it be that my fight with Jenny got things worse, and in her anger, she hurt Brad, making Professor Evans and Daniel rush to help him?
My mind was racing.
The senior laughed. "What are you thinking about? Don't stress. Professor Evans had something to take care of and won't be back this afternoon. He told me to wait for you here."
These days, there are so many ways to communicate. Why did the wise Professor Evans pick the most old-school one?
"Did Professor Evans leave a message for me?" I asked. He wouldn't have someone waiting for me for no reason.
"Yep, he did. He said, 'Tell Jane, the plan stays the same. Don't do anything crazy. Wait for me to get back.'"
The senior mimicked Professor Evans' tone and expression. It was kinda cute, like he was trying to cheer me up, but I wasn't feeling it.
I remembered what Professor Evans said before; if needed, he'd use his private resources.
Now that he was personally involved, I didn't know if he had used those resources, but it definitely meant things weren't looking good.
I reached into my bag for my phone to call Professor Evans and get the details. But my bag was empty; I must've left my phone at home in my rush earlier.
I said goodbye to the senior and hurried home to grab my phone.
Usually, I drive or call a car. The few times I walk, it's a leisurely stroll, so I don't really notice the distance.
But now, with my mind racing, I forgot to hail a car. Even though I was running, it felt like the road was never-ending.
When I finally got my phone, I saw a message from Professor Evans sent an hour ago. It was pretty much what the senior had said; he reassured me to stay calm and wait for his return. He said the situation wasn't out of control yet, and if I acted on my own, it could make things worse.
Even though I was dying to find Brad, Professor Evans was my rock right now, and I couldn't ignore his advice.
My goal was to get Brad back safely. If my impulsiveness made things worse for him, I'd never forgive myself.
Since Professor Evans told me to stay put, I had no choice but to wait anxiously for the three-day meeting.
The whole afternoon passed with no word from Professor Evans or Daniel. I was getting more and more uneasy.
By five in the afternoon, my anxiety was through the roof. I took Daniel off the blacklist and sent him a message asking where he was and when he'd be back at school.
Then I messaged Professor Evans, asking if he had any updates on Brad.
Both messages were met with silence. No response from anyone.
My heart was pounding as I waited. Unable to sit still, I called Rafael.
If I had any other option, I wouldn't have bothered Rafael. His piercing eyes always made me feel like he could see right through me, like a wolf watching its prey. It felt dangerous; I didn't like dealing with him.
