Chapter 372 Specialist
Seeing Mia's face, it was obvious she wasn't on board with what I said. But was her grumpy tone hiding a heart that was starting to soften?
Get lost? Fine. I won't be in their way, giving them all the space they need to get closer.
After bickering with Mia and venting about Jenny, I felt a lot of my bottled-up frustration melt away.
I had thought with the school backing us and Professor Evans in our corner, things would go smoothly, and my relationship with Brad would stay solid. We had support and weren't fighting this battle alone.
But reality hit me hard. I totally underestimated both the situation and Jenny.
Jenny would do anything to get what she wanted. When her schemes didn't work, she switched to a softer approach.
The school's team was still coming together, and I was leading a project. Working on two similar projects for different companies at the same time was a big no-no in the industry.
Joining the Taylor family's project wasn't as easy as I thought, unless the project I was handling wrapped up early.
Before things got sorted out, Jenny made a move I couldn't refuse and had to go along with.
Jenny's actions not only hurt me but also let her take advantage of saving Brad's life.
On the fourth night after Brad moved into the office, we had dinner and walked home hand in hand.
I preferred holding hands over hugging and kissing. Brad's hand was always warm and dry, wrapping around mine like he was holding his whole world. In those moments, my heart felt so full.
I often thought how amazing it would be to walk through life hand in hand; it was simple, warm, and happy.
As long as Brad was by my side, I loved holding his hand and walking on the stone path. I cherished the closeness and the feeling of depending on each other.
Holding Brad's big hand, his scent filling my nose, and with just a slight turn of my head, I could see his handsome face. Whenever he noticed me looking, Brad's eyes would soften, making my heart skip a beat.
Honestly, being in a relationship didn't need big thrills; a simple, ordinary life was its own kind of happiness.
Brad and I were talking about the FutureVision project, figuring out how much longer it would take to finish. Brad said once this project was done, he'd make sure we worked together.
He said Jenny's daily antics at the office were driving him nuts. Once I joined, if Jenny kept causing trouble, I'd handle her. No matter what happened, Brad would have my back.
I asked Brad how he planned to take responsibility.
Brad smirked and said, "Don't worry about the how, as long as we get there."
I said, "I don't care; Jenny's obsessed with you, so why should I deal with her?"
Brad said I was heartless, ignoring his problems, and that he'd deal with me when we got home.
We were having a good time when Jenny called Brad; it was a video call.
It was the first time Jenny had called Brad via video.
The vibe instantly chilled, and my heart started racing.
Brad handed me the phone with a stern look, signaling for me to deal with it. I thought for a second and handed it back to him.
Jenny wasn't just Brad's lifesaver; she was also a key partner for both Brad and the school. If she got upset, the whole team could be in hot water.
This was Brad's first big project since joining National Capital University. If things went south, it would hit him hard. If Jenny pulled some shady move, Brad could get blacklisted in the industry.
No matter how jealous I felt, I knew how important this was. For Brad's sake, I had to suck it up.
Brad reluctantly answered the call, and Jenny's perfectly made-up face popped up on the screen.
I was speechless. Jenny had dolled herself up in the middle of the night just to show off to Brad. It was gross.
I was annoyed; I moved closer to Brad, making sure I was in the frame too.
Wasn't Jenny trying to mess with me by calling so late? Well, two could play that game.
"Brad, I'm sorry to bother you so late," Jenny said softly, her eyes constantly flirting with Brad.
I quickly covered my eyes.
Brad noticed my little act, chuckling softly without giving Jenny any respect.
Jenny's smile turned stiff and creepy, but she gritted her teeth to keep her cool.
"You are not someone who can't distinguish between priorities. Calling so late must be for work, so no need to apologize," Brad said coldly, keeping his distance.
Jenny trembled with anger.
Maybe I wasn't being nice, but every time I saw her frustrated, I couldn't help but feel happy. To be polite, I turned my face slightly and smiled quietly.
Brad secretly squeezed my hand. I looked up and asked with my eyes what was going on. Brad's thick eyebrows relaxed, and he mouthed for me not to be too smug and to respect Jenny's position.
I gave him a dissatisfied look. Why couldn't I be smug? Jenny was the one always causing trouble. Why should I behave? If I behaved on my own, that was one thing, but Brad telling me to behave was another, making me feel like he was defending Jenny.
My boyfriend couldn't defend another woman. No way, I wouldn't accept it.
Feeling unhappy, I started to pull my hand out of his grip.
It seemed like he was just holding lightly. When I tried to pull away, Brad's hand became like a clamp. I tried several times but couldn't move an inch. Brad remained calm, showing no sign of his silent struggle with me.
I said, "Let go of my hand. I don't want to delay your work."
Brad said, "I won't let go. I want you to delay my work, the more, the better. I like it."
Our silent tug-of-war lasted for ten seconds, ending in my defeat.
Jenny was finally angered by our interaction. She dropped her shy act and adopted a serious, authoritative tone, taking on the air of a client. "Mr. Pitt, something urgent has come up. You need to go on a sudden trip with me. We'll leave shortly. I'm calling to inform you to be prepared. You don't need to bring clothes and toiletries, as there will be special arrangements made by staff there.“
"Someone to arrange everything?" I ignored the main issue and asked in disbelief.
