Chapter 7 Paper Airplane

The night before the entrance exam, I drowned my emotions in a pile of test papers and exercise books.

Maybe it was because we were in the same class, or just out of habit, but after some intense studying, I'd always stretch and look for Daniel. Most of the time, he was at his desk, buried in his books, pen never stopping.

Daniel's handwriting was neat, and teachers often praised it. He was a great speaker too. Whenever he recited articles on stage, he sounded like a pro. His grades were always top-notch, making him the teachers' favorite.

Teachers often wondered which university Daniel would get into. I overheard them chatting about it when I handed in my work. They never reached a conclusion, but they were all proud to have him in the class.

Daniel had one goal: National Capital University, the best in the country. He always aimed high and wouldn't settle for less.

Because of him, I also set my sights on National Capital University when I started high school.

I dreamed of continuing our classmate relationship in college, so I studied hard. One exercise book after another, countless cups of late-night coffee, and revised essays were all steps toward Daniel.

College seemed so far away. I fantasized about holding hands with Daniel, walking through campus paths covered in maple leaves. I imagined him wrapping a scarf around me with his warm hands, then holding my hands to share his warmth.

A sweet campus romance was my reward!

It was the invisible sugar cube in every bitter cup of coffee I drank while studying late at night.

But none of these dreams would come true anymore!

I looked up at Daniel less and less, and he was no longer like a perfect statue for me to admire, all because of one reason: another woman was by his side.

One time, when I glanced up, Daniel wasn't at his desk. I turned and saw him leaning against the classroom window, chatting and laughing with Zoe.

Under the pressure of the entrance exam, the whole class felt tense, and Daniel and Zoe's flirting stood out like a sore thumb. Jealousy flared up in me, but before I could say anything, Lillian's sharp voice cut through the air, "Stop distracting everyone! You're not even in the same class! What's so important?"

Zoe left reluctantly, and Daniel, annoyed, went back to his seat.

I was secretly thrilled. "Nice one, Lillian! You're the best."

But teenage love is like the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden—irresistible despite the risks. During a self-study session, our homeroom teacher, Theo Marner, noticed Daniel fidgeting under his desk. Theo walked over slowly, which should have given Daniel enough time to hide whatever he was holding, but Daniel seemed too absorbed to notice.

"Hand it over!" Theo's tone was still gentle, as he had a soft spot for this top student.

Daniel hesitated, clearly reluctant.

"I don't know when you started reading comics, but I can let it slide this time," Theo said, trying to be understanding. But Daniel's face turned red, unwilling to give up the item.

Seeing this, Theo's patience wore thin. Even the best grades couldn't save Daniel now.

Theo forcefully took the item from Daniel's desk drawer. It was a pink paper airplane!

But this wasn't just any paper airplane; it was covered in Daniel's love notes.

It was a love letter folded into a paper airplane!

I knew exactly where it was meant to go.

Theo's face darkened. At such a crucial time before the entrance exam, his star student was wasting time on romance! He was furious, ready to crush the paper airplane and Daniel's romantic dreams.

But then, Daniel snatched the airplane back and threw it out the window.

With a shout, the paper airplane soared, breaking free from the classroom. "Zoe, I love you!"

The airplane flew wildly in the wind, landing on the windowsill of Zoe's classroom.

I sat at my desk, pen in hand, watching it all unfold. Daniel's actions caused a stir in the classroom. Amidst the chatter, I could almost hear Daniel's heartbeat.

Thump! It was so strong and powerful.

And then, after all the commotion, I heard a faint sound of a heart breaking quietly.

Whose heart was breaking?
