Chapter 497 Brother

Back then, I was dead set on getting a paternity test, but Jenny was being super stubborn and wouldn't let go of the kid.

She totally lost it at the police station, crying and yelling like she was the victim, making the cops really uncomfortable. They kept asking if we could just sort it out ourselves.

I was like, "No way. She made up lies and won't admit she was wrong. She needs to face the consequences. Plus, I need closure because she's seriously damaged our reputation."

Michael, who had been hanging around for ages, suddenly stepped up and calmly said, "Sorry for the hassle. This kid is mine and Ms. Taylor's. I have the paternity test results."

I wasn't surprised by this because I'd already noticed his special feelings for Jenny.

But I couldn't figure out why Jenny wanted a paternity test when she knew the kid was Michael's.

Michael knew everyone was confused and explained, "That night, it was definitely me with Ms. Taylor, but she insisted the kid had nothing to do with me and was Mr. Pitt's. To check Ms. Taylor's claim, I secretly took the kid's hair for a paternity test and confirmed the kid is mine and has nothing to do with Mr. Pitt."

"Michael, shut up." Jenny put the kid on the table and rushed over to hit Michael, causing a huge scene.

At first, Michael stayed quiet and let her hit and yell at him, but as Jenny's insults got worse, he couldn't hold back his anger. He grabbed Jenny's flailing hand and shouted, "Jenny, what do you want? Does having my kid make you feel so low? I treated you like gold; am I worthless to you?"

Jenny screamed, "Yes, you are worthless. You're just a driver. How can you be the father of my kid? You don't deserve it."

Michael shot back, "Fine, I don't deserve it. I'll take my kid and leave. You can find someone who deserves you. I'm done with you."

He picked up the kid, held him close, and walked away without looking back at Jenny.

Loving a woman like that, Michael was pretty pathetic.

Jenny must've caused a lot of drama. This time, Michael was really heartbroken.

Jenny was stunned. She probably never thought Michael, who she always bossed around, would give up on her.

"Michael, don't go; wait for me." Jenny, with her messy hair, stood there for a while before suddenly running out frantically after Michael.

The students who had followed us to the office door politely stepped aside for her.

After all the chaos, the cops were exhausted. I dropped the report and went out to eat with Brad and the students.

This whole thing was like a pebble thrown into the Pacific Ocean, causing a tiny ripple before disappearing completely.

Jenny vanished from the public eye again, and I got back to working hard on my graduation thesis.

Sometimes, I'd wonder how Jenny's kid was doing and if Jenny managed to win Michael back.

I had no way of knowing, and honestly, it didn't matter to me.

I had more important things to focus on.

In early June, I took part in the graduate defense at National Capital University and passed with flying colors.

The school offered me a job to stay on as a faculty member.

To talk it over, I went back to Sunhaven with Brad to discuss it with my family.Honestly, my dreams were somewhere else. Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to open my own art studio, live life on my own terms—paint whenever I felt like it, and just chill with some tea and my phone on lazy days.

But that was just my dream. My parents, on the other hand, were all about having a stable job.

Both Brad's and my parents were super supportive of me teaching at National Capital University.

The job fit perfectly with my major, letting me keep doing what I loved—sharing my passion and teaching others, which was pretty awesome.

Brad said being a teacher wouldn't stop me from having my own art studio. Once I got settled, I could start planning for it.

Being able to meet my parents' expectations while chasing my own dreams made me really happy.

So, after heading back to Regalia, I became an official painting instructor at National Capital University.

I handed over all the paint development stuff to Elliot and completely stepped back.

Compared to starting a business, I preferred being a teacher, sharing my knowledge and passion with my students.

Elliot wasn't thrilled and didn't want to take over, but Bronte got mad and called him ungrateful and incompetent for not being able to handle even a small company.

In the end, Elliot surprisingly decided to take on the company's establishment and generously offered me a 25% share.

In early October, Brad's and my parents came to Regalia to talk about our wedding.

When it came to stuff like this, I just listened. They never gave me a chance to decide or asked for my opinion.

It had always been like this since I was a kid, and I was used to it.

I sat behind the curtains, listening to Brad and Daniel chatting while smoking on the terrace.

Daniel said, "Are you happy now that you've got what you wanted?"

Brad replied, "Jane agreeing to marry me is my greatest blessing."

Daniel shot back, "If I hadn't been foolish back then, would it be your turn?"

Brad warned, "Listen, Daniel, Jane is my life. I won't let you mess with her, and don't say those things again. She's always been an independent thinker and doesn't need your nonsense to know who she truly loves."

Daniel responded, "Fine, you two are in love, and I'm the bad guy, the jerk. Okay? I won't say it anymore. Brad, congrats."

Brad said, "Yeah, that's what you should say."

He noticed the curtain moving and pulled me out from behind it. "What are you hiding there for?"

I leaned into his arms and looked up with a goofy smile. "I wanted to see if you were talking bad about me," I said.

Inside, Emma called Brad's name, and he let go of me to go talk to her in the dining room.

Only Daniel and I were left on the terrace.

Years later, facing Daniel alone again, I felt a different kind of emotion. It was interesting, simple, not essential, but never completely absent.

Now, Daniel was my future husband's brother, which made him family.

I said, "Why don't you go inside and drink with your dad?"

Daniel relaxed, put out his cigarette, and looked up at me. He said, "Thanks, Jane. And congrats."

I told him, "Rachel is a good girl. Don't let her down."

Daniel nodded seriously. Maybe mentioning Rachel softened his eyes. He replied, "I'll take good care of her. I have to go pick her up now."

With that, he grabbed his coat and left with a lighter step.
