Chapter 139 Attempt
"I had someone check the surveillance footage. John hit you first. I've already called the police and applied for a disability assessment. Someone will come soon. Just tell the truth."
Daniel just shrugged, showing no reaction.
After a chaotic night, I was exhausted. Brad, feeling bad for me, took me back to the dorm and told me to get some sleep. He said he'd come back after sorting everything out.
It was New Year's Day, and I didn't want to be alone in the dorm. But with Daniel's situation being serious, I couldn't make things harder for Brad. So, I reluctantly went upstairs alone.
When I got back to the dorm and went to the terrace, Brad was still downstairs, waving at me from afar.
Seeing Brad, all my frustration vanished. I waved back and watched him get into the car and leave.
After washing up, I changed into comfy pajamas, sent a New Year's greeting to Helen, and went to bed.
In the afternoon, I woke up and checked my phone. Ronan and Helen had each transferred some money to me. I was thrilled and ran to the hospital with my phone.
The money from my first project at National Capital University had come in.
During my years at Northern Institute of the Arts, Larry and Brad had taken me on many projects, and I had earned quite a bit.
I wasn't short on money, but the money from Ronan and Helen was different. It was a deep expression of their love for me, far more valuable than what I earned.
Brad was leaning tiredly against the headboard, resting with his eyes closed. When he noticed me, he smiled and waved me over.
"Don't you hate hospitals? Why did you come?" Brad held my hand and kissed it repeatedly, his stubble making my hand itch.
Blushing, I pulled my hand back and softly said, "I don't want to be alone in the dorm; it's no fun."
"Alright, you're the best. I'm a bit tired. Can you massage my temples?"
"Sure." I gently massaged Brad like Helen did for Ronan.
Brad was really tired and soon his breathing became steady.
At some point, Daniel woke up. He quietly watched Brad and me, his eyes empty.
Brad woke up after just over half an hour. Seeing that I had been massaging him the whole time, he tenderly massaged my fingers.
"Are you feeling uncomfortable anywhere?" Brad asked Daniel.
Daniel didn't answer. Instead, he said, "You both knew all along."
Brad and I exchanged a glance but said nothing.
Even though we said nothing, the answer was clear.
"When did it start?" Daniel asked.
"I don't know when it started either. I discovered it the year she came to Northern Institute of the Arts for an exchange," I said.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I tried many times, but you wouldn't let me. That time in the restaurant's backyard, I was determined to tell you everything, but you drove me away. It's not that I didn't want to tell you; you just didn't give me the chance. And even if I did, would you have believed me?"
Daniel gave a bitter smile and stayed silent for a long time.
In the evening, Hugh and Emma arrived. Seeing Daniel covered in bandages, Emma immediately started crying, saying she always knew Zoe wasn't good for him and blamed Daniel for being blind, saying he deserved to be beaten.
Hugh sat in the hallway, smoking one cigarette after another.
Brad and I went out to buy food, giving them some space.
Since it was New Year's Day, many stores had closed early, and even food delivery services had stopped. Brad and I walked a long way before finding a restaurant where we ordered a few dishes to take away.
When we returned, Emma was still scolding Daniel. "Why can't you read people? Jane was so good and liked you so much, but you went for someone like Zoe, who's so fickle. No matter what we said, you wouldn't listen. Don't blame me for being harsh; this is your retribution for how you treated Jane back then.
I don't even dare to think about the past; whenever I do, I feel so sorry about Jane. Such a good girl, and you hurt her so much. Thank goodness for Brad. I'll entrust her to Brad in the future, and that will make me feel a bit better.
Look how happy Brad is. If you weren't so blind, you could be this happy now. Daniel, you deserve this."
Daniel looked out the window and kept saying, "I know, I know."
Emma kept mentioning me, which made me very uncomfortable. Brad gave me a comforting smile and held my hand tightly.
He pushed the door open, pretending not to have heard anything, and placed the food on the table. "Mom, Dad, wash your hands and have something to eat."
Daniel, in a bad mood due to his injuries, only ate half a bowl of porridge.
Seeing this, Emma scolded him again, saying he deserved his suffering and that no one felt sorry for him.
Daniel silently endured it. I couldn't stand it and secretly tried to persuade Emma.
The next day when I came to the hospital, the room was empty. I saw Daniel struggling to take out his phone to make a call. It seemed the other person didn't answer, and he disappointedly put the phone back under his pillow.
I thought he must have been calling Zoe.
Since Zoe left with John that day, she had disappeared without a trace, not even a phone call or a Facebook message.
Daniel's mood grew worse by the day, leading to his slower recovery.
On the morning of the third, Hugh and Emma left. They both had jobs and couldn't stay to take care of him for long.
Before leaving, Emma held Brad's and my hands, saying she was entrusting Daniel to us and asking us to take good care of him despite everything.
Those things happened so many years ago that I no longer cared. And since he's Brad's brother, I would take good care of him for Brad's sake.
Brad had been taking care of him in the hospital for four days straight, without changing his clothes, which were now wrinkled, and he hadn't shaved, looking quite haggard.
I told Brad to go home, take a shower, and freshen up while I stayed at the hospital for a while.
When Brad left, Daniel was still asleep.
I sat bored in the chair, scrolling through my phone. Suddenly, I looked up and found Daniel staring at me directly.
