Chapter 148: The Curse

"Yo, everyone, remember how Daniel used to trash-talk Jane like she was nothing, then ditched her to chase his dream girl? Now Jane's got a new boyfriend, and they're solid. But she wants to mess up my daughter Jane's happiness just to play the good mom. Seriously, does that make any sense? Is the Hanks Family's daughter supposed to be everyone's doormat, with no say in her own life? Emma, you're talking out of your ass, forcing Jane to go along with your crap. It's low, selfish, and just plain dirty! I've known you for over thirty years and treated you like a sister, but this is the first time I've seen how messed up you are. Emma, you really let me down."

Helen shot Emma a half-smile, her eyes cutting like a knife, making Emma look down in shame. In that moment, I saw pure hate in Emma's eyes.

The crowd started whispering, pointing fingers at Emma.

Hugh turned away, looking like he wanted to disappear.

A nurse showed up with security. "If you wanna argue, take it outside. Don't disturb the patients. Keep this up, and I'll have security throw you out."

Emma awkwardly got up from the floor, looking around to see no one backing her up, just faces full of disapproval and disgust.

Maybe the whole scene got to her, 'cause she turned and slapped Brad.

Five angry red fingerprints popped up on Brad's face.

He looked down, hiding the disappointment and gloom in his eyes.

"Jane, you might have a pretty face, but you've got a nasty heart. You've wrecked the lives of two Pitt family sons, bringing chaos to our family. I'm telling you, karma's coming for you. Don't go out in the rain, or you might get struck by lightning."

Helen was about to charge at her, but I held her back tight.

Emma had lost it; we couldn't afford to lose it too.

Brad's temples were throbbing with anger, and he grabbed Emma's arm, dragging her towards the elevator. "Mom, what are you saying? Stop it."

Emma wouldn't listen. She shook off Brad's grip and slapped him again. "You're no good either. Do you think happiness built on Daniel's misery will last? I'm telling you, it won't! Even if you two stay together, you won't be happy because Daniel will always come between you. I curse neither of you ever find peace and you both die miserable."

In the end, she started pounding her head like a lunatic.

I was shaking with anger, and so was Brad, the veins on his face bulging.

Emma, this crazy woman, why would she curse her own son? Did she even deserve to be a mother?

Brad's expression tore at me. Just as I was about to speak, Helen stopped me again. She marched over and slapped Emma, who covered her cheek in shock.

"You dare hit me?"

"Yeah, I hit you, you heartless witch. Are you nuts? Brad is your son. Cursing your own kid is gonna come back to bite you. No wonder Daniel turned out so cold and selfish; he got it from you. Let me tell you, even if Jane never gets married, she ain't ever gonna be with Daniel. Give it up. Jane, let's bounce. We don't need neighbors like this. From now on, whether Daniel lives or dies, we don't care."

Just then, the elevator arrived. Helen grabbed my cold hands and pulled me inside, with Ronan right behind us.

Brad held the elevator door open at the last second and stepped in.

I leaned against the elevator wall, shaking, my vision going dark.

Emma's words echoed in my head, cutting deep.

"Jane, what's wrong? Say something, don't scare me."

"Say something, look at me. Don't be afraid, we're all here with you, it's okay."

I tried to open my mouth to tell Ronan and Helen that I was fine, not to worry about me. But no matter how hard I tried, my throat felt choked. All I could do was tremble.

"Don't be afraid, I'm here." Brad held the elevator, stopping others from getting in.

He hugged me tight in the corner, his embrace growing stronger. His scent filled my nose, his eyes full of worry and deep pain.

I was hurting, but he was hurting even more.

Because the person cursing us was his own mom.

Brad's embrace was warm, his scent gradually calming me down.

Tears finally flowed, the salty taste spreading in our mouths, mirroring our feelings.

I reached out to hug him, telling him I was okay, giving him my strength and support.

He released me, our foreheads touching, and I saw the restrained anger and unvented pain in his eyes.

"Brad."

"I'm here, don't be afraid."

I cried, leaning into Brad's embrace, feeling so wronged.

"Brad, why did Emma say those things about us? We did nothing wrong, why did she say that?"

Brad gently patted my back, kissing my hair and cheeks.

"Shh, forget those words. Our future is ours to decide, no one else. We will be happy, we will."

I didn't know how long it took, but eventually, I heard someone outside asking if the elevator was broken and calling for repairs. Brad finally put me down, handing me to Ronan and Helen. "Ronan, Helen, what my mom did today was wrong. I'll talk to her. Please take care of Jane for me, I'm really grateful."

Ronan nodded, still thinking about the absurd farce. "I never thought Emma would become so unreasonable. Alright, you go back. Jane is our daughter, we'll take good care of her."

As we stepped out of the elevator, Brad grabbed my wrist, looking into my eyes, solemnly promising, "Jane, we will be happy, believe me."

"I believe you."
