Chapter 399 Met Once

The big living room went dead quiet in a heartbeat.

I tried to calm my breathing, but it just kept speeding up, and I felt all jittery. Man, I really wanted to see Yancy drop to his knees and confess his love.

I couldn't stand seeing Mia fall for Yancy's tricks like a fool. I looked down and stared at my toes.

Amelia once told me that the worst thing in martial arts training was to get all restless and impatient.

"Yancy, you!" Mia blurted out, her face turning red as she looked away.

Yancy's face lit up. He got down on one knee in front of Mia, pulled out a small velvet box from his pocket, and opened it.

"Mia," Yancy said, "The moment I saw you, I knew it was a love that would last a lifetime. In the Bailey family, we only love one woman for life, and you're the one for me. I'll cherish you, put up with you, and make you the happiest girl ever. So, Mia, will you be my girlfriend? This ring is actually an engagement ring. I know it's a bit early, but I really hope you'll say yes. Please?"

Yancy's words got to me, and I slammed the door, heading to my room to get back to my basic martial arts training, leaving them in the living room.

Amelia always said that when you're practicing, you gotta focus on one thing and not let your mind wander.

So I tried to focus on my ears, straining to hear what was going on in the living room. But the house was too well soundproofed, and I couldn't catch a thing.

The three-day deadline finally came, and I showed up early at Professor Evans' office.

Professor Evans was at his desk, talking on the phone. His tone was neutral, just saying stuff like, "We'll discuss it when I return." I couldn't tell what it was about.

When he saw me, Professor Evans motioned with his eyes to the seat across from him. I walked over and sat down.

Daniel wasn't there yet, so I called him, but he didn't pick up.

Daniel wasn't answering his phone again. What was he up to? It was really stressing me out. I couldn't sit still.

Professor Evans said, "Sit down properly. You're making me dizzy with all that pacing."

I had no choice but to sit down and keep waiting.

After half an hour, there was still no sign of Daniel, and Professor Evans wasn't talking to me either. I sat there alone until my back hurt, staring at the office door.

The school staff clocked out at five in the afternoon. Soon, it was just me and Professor Evans left in the office.

"Go open the door," Professor Evans suddenly said.

I perked up and quickly ran to the door. Daniel's travel-worn face appeared before me.

"You're back. Professor Evans has been waiting for you for a long time," I said.

I stepped aside, and Daniel, carrying a travel bag, walked in. He casually tossed the bag onto an empty desk, grabbed a bottle of water, and started drinking.

"Come over and sit down. Rest for a bit," Professor Evans gestured.

Daniel had indeed left school to deal with Brad's situation. No wonder Rachel kept it from me; Daniel must've told her not to say anything. He probably thought I'd overreact and make things worse.

Professor Evans said, "I sent Daniel to Silverbrook City. Brad's situation involves both the school and the Taylor family. Unless it's an emergency, I can't use private resources. Since things were still unclear and you were getting anxious waiting for the investigation results, I set a three-day deadline to keep you calm and had Daniel look into the matter personally. Only what he sees with his own eyes is reliable first-hand information."

When Professor Evans mentioned the three-day deadline, I didn't get it. In urgent situations, every minute counted. Now I understood; this was his real plan.

I felt embarrassed. Both Professor Evans and Daniel knew me well. They knew I was worried about Brad and might do something rash, making things worse. So, they had to find a way to make me cooperate with their plan.

"I'm sorry, Professor Evans, for causing trouble." I bit my lip and apologized to Daniel, "I'm sorry, Daniel. I misunderstood you."

Before, when Daniel escorted me at night, he must've genuinely been worried about my safety, but I had coldly rejected his kindness. I should apologize properly.

Daniel smiled warmly and said it was nothing. He then took out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket and looked at me and Professor Evans inquiringly.

Both Professor Evans and I indicated that we didn't mind. So he lit one, took a deep drag, and exhaled a cloud of smoke. With the smoke obscuring his face, Daniel's fatigue was less noticeable.

"Tell us the specifics; Jane doesn't know anything yet," Professor Evans said after Daniel finished his cigarette.

Daniel stubbed out the cigarette, waved away the lingering smoke, and glanced at me. He then lowered his head and fiddled with his lighter. "Brad and Jenny are both in Silverbrook City. Brad isn't at risk, but he's being closely watched, and his freedom of movement is restricted."

I asked, "Is Jenny behind this? Isn't this illegal detention? What about Brad? He wouldn't just comply."

Daniel said, "You're right, Brad wouldn't just comply. But if Brad feels indebted to Jenny, do you think he might agree?"

I knew Brad would agree because of that.

Jenny had saved Brad's life, and she still couldn't walk on her own. If Jenny used her life-saving act to coerce him, Brad might comply. Brad never wanted to owe anyone, especially not Jenny, who had continuously affected and hurt me.

I started to feel a deep pain in my heart. Brad, to repay Jenny's lifesaving kindness, was enduring so much suffering for my sake. I burst into tears.

Daniel said, "Brad is fine; why are you crying? I bribed a man close to Brad, and with his help, I managed to meet Brad in secret."
