Chapter 96 Trouble
When Lillian called, I was crying uncontrollably, which freaked her out. She kept asking if that jerk Daniel and Zoe were bullying me again.
That's when I realized I hadn't seen those two in days.
Maybe Daniel and Zoe finally decided to leave me alone. That would be awesome.
Lillian said, "Jane, you're such a pushover! Can't you stand up for yourself? If you won't, I will. I'm calling Daniel to give him a piece of my mind."
"No, please don't. They haven't been around for days. I finally have some peace, so don't stir things up," I replied.
Lillian sounded confused, "They haven't been bugging you? Daniel maybe, but Zoe? That's weird."
Yeah, I thought the same, but it was true.
I said, "Whatever the reason, I'm just glad they're gone."
"True, you can finally relax," Lillian agreed.
I wanted some quiet days, but trouble always found me.
That night, it rained hard, with the wind slamming raindrops against the window, making a racket that chilled me to the bone.
I expected another stormy day, but when I woke up, it was sunny with clear blue skies.
Everyone loves a sunny day, and I was no different. I grabbed my book and headed out for breakfast before class.
As soon as I reached the first floor, I saw a crowd at the entrance.
"The main character is here, make way," someone shouted, and the crowd parted for me.
I walked through, confused, while people pointed at me like I had done something wrong.
Then I saw her: Louis's mom, Megan Anderson. Her being here meant trouble.
Sure enough, things weren't going to be easy. Trouble had arrived.
I didn't get why Megan was still after me when I had already given her what she wanted.
Megan yelled, "Jane, you shamelessly hurt my son and still dare to show your face? You shameless lowlife!"
I had just steadied myself when she pointed at me and charged, followed by two women I recognized, one of them Mindy's mom, Paige Flores.
No matter what, she was Louis's mom. As long as Megan didn't go too far, I wouldn't hold it against her.
But Megan started by calling me shameless and attacking my background, which I couldn't tolerate.
With so many students and teachers watching, if I didn't stand up for myself, I'd be a pariah at National Capital University. Why should I let her insult me?
Lillian was right; I needed to stop being so gentle. Otherwise, everyone would think I was weak and easy to bully.
Megan charged at me like she had seen her enemy, raising her hand to slap me.
I handed my book to a classmate, stepped forward, and grabbed Megan's hand, pushing it away.
That's why parents wanted their kids to grow tall; height gave you an edge.
Megan probably didn't expect that. She stumbled back, her face twisted with anger, still insulting my background.
That really ticked me off.
I said, "Ma'am, watch your language. What you're saying is baseless and slander."
Megan snapped, "I don't need evidence to deal with you bitch! If you dare to seduce my son, you shouldn't be afraid of me saying it. Look around; this is Regalia. I can decide your fate with one word."
Her followers egged her on, and Megan, either not thinking straight or thinking she ruled Regalia, got even more reckless as the crowd grew.
I chuckled inwardly. 'Keep going. The more you talk, the more people will see the truth.'
I said, "Really? Then tell me, how did I harm your son? Why am I being called a bitch? How does my background offend anyone? If you can't explain, I'll ask my law school friends and professors to join us."
Megan replied, "How dare you! If it weren't for you, Louis wouldn't be beaten and hospitalized! You made my son lose his mind, and now you're flaunting yourself. Do you have any conscience?"
I almost laughed out of anger. 'I've seen people twist the truth, but this is next level. Do you really not know why Louis was beaten? And who's flaunting here? Your screams are almost to blow the roof off.'
I explained, "Mrs. Anderson, I wanted to overlook what happened out of respect for Louis, but since you're here spreading lies, I have to set the record straight. If I don't, I can't stay at National Capital University. Since you dared to come, you must not be afraid of the truth, so let's go through it. First, Louis was my high school classmate. From the day I met him until now, we were just classmates. In college, I had no private contact with him. You can verify this with your son; phone records and Facebook chats can prove it. So, your accusation of seduction is an insult to my character. I ran into Louis at National Capital University by chance. He pursued me, and I appreciated his sincerity, so I agreed to consider it, but I never clung to him. You can verify this with my roommate, Mindy. She knows my daily schedule well. On Louis's father's birthday, I didn't want to go to your house, but Louis begged me to be his date, with no other intentions. He pleaded, so I reluctantly agreed."
