Chapter 204: Peeking

Focusing on my painting, I quickly forgot there were people in the living room, inadvertently giving them a great opportunity to freely interact.

When Brad's call interrupted me, I realized it was already pitch dark outside, and I was so hungry that my stomach started to growl.

Rubbing my empty stomach, I opened the bedroom door while talking with Brad, but I didn't see Mia and Yancy.

I walked out and found them busy in the kitchen.

The amber light cast upon them, making them appear like a pair of devoted lovers. The atmosphere was harmonious, exuding a sense of peacefulness and the passage of time.

Seeing this, I paused for a moment. "Why aren't you saying anything?" Brad asked after looking through the camera for a while and not finding anything.

Brad had lost some weight, his complexion wasn't great, but his spirits were good. "Brad, you've lost weight. Are you not used to the food there?"

"It's okay. The school here has a volunteer teaching program. I have to go to the mountains to teach the kids during the holidays. The original teacher had his appendix out and is recovering, so I'm filling in for him. The conditions up there are tough."

I went back to my room and continued chatting with Brad. "Do you want me to send you a sun hat? Getting sunburned can be really painful."

"What kind of man wears a sun hat? What did you have for dinner?"

"Mia and her future boyfriend are cooking in the kitchen. I don't know what they're making. I didn't want to go over and disturb them."

Brad looked surprised. "Mia has a new boyfriend?"

I could see from his face that he was implying, how could Mia have a new boyfriend so soon?

"Not yet, but I think it will happen soon. The guy's name is Yancy, he's three years younger than Mia, very outstanding, and treats Mia exceptionally well. In my opinion, he's much better than Benjamin."

"Mia is willing to let go of Benjamin? We all saw how good Benjamin was to Mia for those years, and yet it still ended like this."

"That's different. Benjamin's good always felt a bit condescending. Yancy actually admires Mia. Besides, when the pain becomes unbearable, you naturally let go. Forget Benjamin; he'll regret it one day."

I angrily scolded Benjamin, making Brad laugh. His eyes were filled with deep affection and longing as he looked at me. "Let's not talk about others. Baby, did you miss me?"

"I missed you a little bit."

"Only a little bit? I think about you all day, can't eat or sleep, and you only missed me a little?"

In fact, I missed Brad a lot, but I was too shy to say it. Besides, girls should be a bit reserved. Saying "a little bit" was normal, right? Although it was more than a little bit, some things were better left unsaid. I was too shy to say it.

I ended the video call with Brad, and Mia knocked on the door, asking me to come out for dinner.

I happily ran out and sat in my seat, my eyes widening in surprise.

The dinner was so lavish!

"Yancy, you made all of this?"

Yancy took off his apron, rubbing his hands, and sat next to Mia, looking a bit embarrassed. "Yes, try it. Mia, you should eat more since you're not feeling well. It's my first time cooking for you, so I might not have gotten your tastes right. Let me know what you like, and I'll bring the ingredients next time to make what you prefer."

"It's delicious." I said, chewing on a piece of steak. "Yancy, you have great skills. I wonder which girl will be so lucky to have you take care of her for a lifetime."

Mia pretended not to hear and focused on eating, while Yancy looked at her and smiled warmly. "I hope it's Mia."

I turned to look at Mia. Her hand holding the fork froze, her brows furrowed, and she didn't say anything, but her fingers gripping the fork turned white from the pressure.

Yancy's smile faded for a moment, but he quickly regained his composure.

Mia's reaction was intense, so I didn't dare continue on this topic and started talking about something else. Yancy immediately followed my lead, chatting happily.

After dinner, Yancy, being very considerate, put on a small apron again and cleaned the kitchen until everything polished to a shine.

When Yancy left with Mia, I sat on the living room sofa, happily waving goodbye.

The door wasn't closed, and I peeked out.

Mia walked him to the elevator, her head down, and said, "Yancy, I still have someone in my heart. Please don't come over anymore."

Yancy stood in the elevator, looking momentarily disappointed, but quickly smiled warmly. "I can wait until the day you let go."

Mia closed the door and gave me an annoyed look. "Enjoying the show, aren't you? Sneaking around like a thief."

I grinned sheepishly and half-jokingly, half-seriously said, "You won't know if the new shoes fit until you ditch the ones that are hurting you."

Mia stood by the window, didn't saying anything.

After a while, it started to rain outside, and the rain grew heavier and heavier until it was like a thick mist, obscuring everything from view.

We didn't turn on the lights. Mia's phone on the coffee table lit up with a simple message: [The rain is too heavy. Stay away from the window, or you'll catch a cold.]

I handed the phone to Mia. She glanced at the message, then turned off the screen while shutting the curtains.

I didn't know how Yancy knew Mia was standing by the window or if he was watching her from somewhere.

What I did know was that if Mia was willing, Yancy could make her happier than Benjamin ever did.

Before bed, I shared my thoughts with Mia. She didn't respond for a long time before saying, "Jane, everyone has two sides. Benjamin gave me the same feeling before. It took me almost five years to see his true self, and it left me with nothing but pain. I don't have the courage to waste another five years seeing another one's true self, especially since Yancy is so much younger than me. It's just not suitable."

She had a point, leaving me unable to argue.

The heavy rain continued all night. The next morning, I found the outside world flooded, with water everywhere and several cars floating on the distant road.

Our neighborhood was in a low-lying area, and the heavy rain overwhelmed the drainage system, causing the water to rise to thigh level, while the rain had no sign of stopping.

Mia's wardrobe consisted mostly of long pants and skirts, unsuitable for this weather. I found her some denim shorts and mesh shoes, packed her favorite long skirt in a waterproof bag, and grabbed an umbrella to walk her to the neighborhood entrance.
