Chapter 312 Completed
"Jane, you're not seriously giving Brad this, are you?" Mia said, rolling her eyes at my choice.
I shot her a wink and said, "It's not about the price, it's about who gives it."
Ignoring Mia's disapproving look, I gathered my courage and told the shop owner my idea.
The shop owner, a young dude with a low ponytail and a bit of an androgynous vibe, but super straightforward, took me to the workbench. He handed me over to the pro with nimble fingers, "Lars Johansson, teach her well. Help this young lady express her love for her boyfriend."
After a quick chat with the shop owner, Lars shooed him away and started discussing my idea with me.
When Lars heard I was making a birthday gift for my boyfriend, he said enviously, "Girls don't usually go this all out for their boyfriends these days. Your boyfriend's lucky. Don't worry, I'll guide you. Let's start by picking the color and pattern of the thread. Since it's for a guy, I wouldn't go with red."
Of course not red. A professor at National Capital University with a red apple keychain? Just the thought of it made me laugh.
I pointed to a spool of dark green thread, and Lars nodded approvingly, "Adding beads will make it look more upscale. What style do you want?"
I went with a simple and elegant cross, easy enough for a beginner like me.
Once we got to work, Lars got all focused and serious. He explained the weaving technique and patiently showed me how to do it.
In less than an hour, the keychain was done. It wasn't as neat and beautiful as Lars's work, but he still praised my effort, considering it was my first time.
Mia compared the keychain to her keyring and found it pretty cool. So she picked a strand of jade-colored thread and started learning alongside me.
Time flew by as we got into it. By the time Mia and I were admiring our four finished keychains, it was already dark outside.
I checked my phone and saw several missed calls and over twenty unread messages on Facebook, all from Brad.
Mia's phone was also blowing up with missed calls from Yancy.
I called Brad back. He said he finished work early today and asked me to send him my location so he could pick me up.
After thinking for a moment, I declined. Birthday gifts should be a surprise. If he knew I was here, he'd figure out what I got him, and that would spoil it.
We were halfway home in a cab when Yancy called. He said he'd finish work soon and would bring us some food, so we didn't need to cook.
We had just entered the house when Brad and Yancy arrived, each carrying several food containers.
I took the food from Brad and brought it to the kitchen. "Yancy, where did you order so much food from? How are we gonna finish it all?"
Yancy shook his hand, red from the packaging straps, but couldn't hide his excitement. His eyes sparkled as he looked at Mia through the kitchen's glass door. "It's not ordered. There was a family banquet today. My grandma heard I was into someone, and she was so happy she cooked several dishes herself and insisted I bring them back for her to try."
Yancy's grandma cooked herself? I was both flattered and curious about what it would taste like. After all, this was my first time having a custom-made meal from a top-tier wealthy family.
Honestly, hearing Yancy's words made me feel happy but also worried.
There were some things Mia might never ask. So, I decided to ask on her behalf.
"Yancy, none of us - Mia, her parents, or even her friends - ever thought she should marry for money. Girls from ordinary families like us just want to marry for love. We would never sell ourselves or our souls for some selfish desires. Do you understand?"
Yancy was taking out a large bowl from the cabinet and placing the dishes in it. After hearing my words, he put the packaging aside, turned to Mia with a gentle smile, and said, "Jane, I get what you mean. Your expectations are the same as mine. My grandma specifically told me that no one in the Bailey family would ever marry for the sake of family interests. In the Bailey family, spouses must be truly in love. I love Mia, and I want to spend my life with her. It's as simple as that."
