Chapter 147: Farce

My heart went ice-cold, like I was stuck in a winter storm.

I had this gut feeling that today’s mess wasn’t gonna end without a fight.

"Emma, get up already. What are you doing? Let's just sit and talk it out. No need for all this drama; you're freaking Jane out," Helen said, grabbing Emma's hand, trying to pull her up.

Emma didn’t even look at Helen. She shook her off and started bawling to me. "Jane, I’m begging you, please save Daniel. Only you can do it, I’m begging you."

She had me in a death grip, and I was too drained to break free. I was wiped out, both in body and mind.

"Emma, saving people is a doctor’s job. I can’t do it," I said, trying to keep my cool, hoping she’d snap back to reality.

But that was just wishful thinking.

Emma was like a gambler, knowing the odds were against her but stubbornly sticking to her guns, refusing to back down.

She was betting, betting that Brad would cave, that I’d give in, that her meltdown would get her what she wanted.

"No, you can do it. As long as you’re with him, Daniel will get better."

She still wanted me to be with Daniel.

Why?

Did I have any duty or obligation to save someone who didn’t even want to live?

Daniel had explained. But his excuses were so lame they just made him look like a bigger jerk, making me doubt his character even more.

He had apologized and explained. At most, I could forgive and forget, but I wasn’t about to throw my whole life away for him.

So, no way was I agreeing.

"Emma, Daniel is sick. As his childhood friend, I’m sad too. I can bring him water and meds, buy him food, and cook for him. But being with him is out of the question. I’ve already promised my life to Brad; I can’t break that vow. Don’t make things hard for Brad; I made that vow alone and it has nothing to do with him."

Brad stood behind me, holding my hand. Helen was on my other side, silently backing me up. Ronan stood next to Helen, protecting us.

Thank God, I wasn’t alone.

I felt a bit bitter. I was so lucky to have such a loving family and partner. As long as they were with me, I wasn’t scared of anything.

After hearing what I said, Emma broke down, crying uncontrollably.

"Jane, I’m begging you. I can’t watch Daniel die. I’m a mother, Helen, you’re a mother too. You get how I feel, right? Help me convince Jane. If it weren’t for that incident back then, Jane and Daniel would’ve been together. How can she betray Daniel and let him die?"

Her cries got the attention of people in other rooms. A bunch of them stood in the hallway, watching the drama unfold.

I thought I heard someone saying I was heartless and would get what’s coming to me for not saving a life. Others wiped their tears, feeling sorry for Emma, saying she was a good mom.

I wanted to cry, but the tears just wouldn't come.

I was supposed to be the innocent one here. Why did people always blame others based on their own twisted understanding without knowing the facts? Was it to show off their empathy or to play the justice card?

Emma was using this whole scene to force me into agreeing.

Brad let go of me and went to help Emma up, but she fought like a wildcat, her nails scratching up his face and hands. She didn’t even look, just kept crying and bowing frantically.

It was like I had personally stabbed Daniel, leaving him unconscious in bed.

But none of this was my fault. I was only helping out because of years of being neighbors and for Brad’s sake!

I couldn’t believe that gentle, passionate Emma could turn so hysterical without reason.

Her actions today completely shattered my understanding of human nature.

"Emma, please don’t do this." I was really pissed and didn’t care about my image anymore. I opened my mouth, ready to argue with her.

Helen grabbed my hand, pushing me behind her, and said firmly, "Jane, stay back. Don’t worry, as long as I’m here, no one can force you."

Helen stood in front of me. She was clearly much shorter than me, yet she seemed like an indestructible wall, shielding me from the storm.

"Emma, we’re all upset that Daniel is sick. Yelling like that won’t help. But since you want to talk, I’ve got nothing to hide. After all, Jane is the victim here. With so many witnesses, I’ll make things clear once and for all to avoid any future drama.

Back then, you suggested that my daughter should be your son’s fiancée. We agreed they’d decide for themselves when they grew up. When Jane turned eighteen, it was your son Daniel who ended the relationship in front of both our families. Right, Emma?

Later, we found out that your son Daniel had secretly been with a girl named Zoe from the next class, which was why he broke up with Jane. Now Daniel’s been cheated on by Zoe and can’t handle it. This isn’t Jane’s responsibility; it’s Daniel’s own mess and has nothing to do with us, especially not Jane. Right, Emma?"

"Stop it, stop it. I just want to save Daniel. What’s the point of bringing up old stuff?" Emma screamed, like a banshee.

"I have to say it. You defamed Jane in front of so many people. I have to tell the truth. Otherwise, people might think The Hanks Family has poor upbringing, raising such an irresponsible daughter.

Emma, Daniel is sick, very sick. Any mother would be concerned. But you should try your best to treat the illness. It’s not a fatal disease; it will be cured. But you just keep saying only Jane can cure Daniel and then use various means to force Jane to be with Daniel."
