Chapter 63 The Sober Mia

After dinner, I lay on Mia's bed, listening to her story.

Mia, a Northern girl with a delicate Southern look, seemed fragile but had a strong, unwavering heart when it came to love.

She poured everything into loving Benjamin.

During the holidays, after a month apart, she missed him so much she couldn't eat or sleep. She told her parents she was visiting a friend, bought a plane ticket, and flew to his city to surprise him and tell him how much she missed him.

When she got to Benjamin's house, she saw a short-haired girl clinging to his arm in the yard.

Mia said, "Jane, rich people's houses are the worst. No walls, big gaps in the fence—I saw everything."

The girl was about eighteen or nineteen, petite, with fancy clothes and a sparkling diamond bracelet.

Mia, always sunny and confident, believed love was pure and could overcome anything, regardless of money or background. She thought love was worth any hardship.

But seeing that girl, Mia felt ashamed. Her raised hand froze and then dropped.

She saw the girl tiptoe to kiss Benjamin, and he didn't pull away.

The sound of Mia dragging her suitcase startled Benjamin, and he noticed her and started to chase.

She jumped into a taxi without looking back.

She didn't know if the girl kissed Benjamin, but just seeing him not dodge shattered her fantasies about love. She cried all the way in the car.

Benjamin called her hundreds of times, but she didn't answer.

He sent her hundreds of Facebook messages, and she listened to each one with tears. He begged her to listen, swearing she was the one he liked. The girl was just a family-approved match; he didn't like her and wouldn't marry her. He asked Mia to give him time to sort things out and promised a stable life together. He begged her not to give up.

But Mia knew they were from different worlds. Seeing the truth early and leaving would save her from more pain.

"So, did you guys break up?" I asked.

Mia nodded, tears streaming down her face. "I broke up with him, but Benjamin didn't agree. I don't care if he agrees or not; I'm done. They can do whatever they want; it's not my problem anymore."

I continued, "What about Benjamin? How did he react?"

"He kept calling and messaging me on Facebook for the first few days, but now it's like he never existed," Mia said.

"I've never been in a serious relationship, so I don't know what real love feels like. We've hung out with Benjamin a lot, and he doesn't seem like a bad guy. Every look he gives you is full of love. How could he do this? Did you see if they actually kissed?" I asked.

Mia cried harder, trembling. "Jane, you're so naive. If not this time, then next time, or the time after that? I'm just an ordinary girl. How can I keep him? I don't want to end up so humble. It's enough that he liked me when I liked him. We have no future together."

I had no words. The truth was harsh.

I just patted her back and cried with her.

Mia said, "Jane, you should stick with Brad. He's your one and only. We all see it; he would never let you suffer like I did."

"Don't talk about me. Brad is just my brother. Isabella will be back tomorrow, right? Let's figure out what to do then. You haven't slept well in a while, so sleep now. I'll stay with you," I replied.

I didn't dwell on what Mia said. I just wanted her to stop crying. Crying over something unattainable only made her sadder; no one could understand.

Just like that late autumn, how many tears did I shed? How many nights did I cry until dawn? How many times was I heartbroken seeing Daniel and Zoe together?

But no one knew how much I suffered back then.

Luckily, I was clear-headed enough to end all my feelings for him at that dinner party.

It was hard at the time, but now I can hardly remember how I felt.

Time heals everything. No matter how deep the love or how bitter the feelings, they all fade away.

Mia's love for Benjamin was similar to my past.

The only difference was that Benjamin liked Mia.

But Daniel only had disdain for me.

"Mia, pull yourself together. Why are you crying? If you want to know the truth, go ask him. You two are a real thing; we all saw it. If something happens, you don't have to bear it alone. If Benjamin is really a jerk, just slap him and walk away. Don't look back, even if he begs," I said.

"Jane, don't be silly. It doesn't matter if I ask or not. Even if he says he likes me, so what? Love overcoming power and money is just a plot in novels. Even if I get in, I'd be stuck bowing down forever. Over time, any love would wear out," Mia replied.

I had to admit, Mia was clear-headed.

"Mia, you make a good point. Maybe you should switch from art to literature. You'd make a killer author or screenwriter," I joked, finally making her laugh.

Mia wiped her tears, tugged at my collar, and hit my shoulder, laughing and scolding, "Jane, you're heartless. I'm so sad, but you're making fun of me."

Around midnight, she finally fell asleep.

The moonlight was bright, shining on her bedside. She slept in the darkness with her brows furrowed deeply.
