Chapter 62 Destiny
"I'm so tired, I don't want to go out. Just want to shower and crash. Got up way too early today." I slumped in my seat, yawning, and leaned back, sneaking glances at Brad next to me.
Brad had this irresistible charm, a mix of elegance and allure.
On the outside, he seemed all wise and classy, but inside, he had this magnetic pull.
I wondered which lucky girl would end up with this gem in the future.
Thinking about him having a girlfriend who'd take up all his time made me a bit jealous.
Brad glanced at me, smiling. "Admiring my looks? You can't skip dinner. What do you want? I'll order it to your dorm."
"No need, Brad. I had the airplane meal, so I'm not hungry." I yawned again, showing how tired I was.
"Not acceptable. Be good. Go shower. By the time you're done, the food will be here. And dry your hair. Wear a coat when you go downstairs, or you'll catch a cold."
"Okay, got it. Sometimes you act like my mom," I replied.
Brad narrowed his eyes, playfully threatening. "Teasing me, Jane? Looking for trouble?"
Of course, he was just kidding. He'd never actually bully his little sister.
When I opened the dorm door, Mia pulled off her face mask and helped with my luggage.
Helping was one thing, but she couldn't stop talking. "Jane, you're so lucky! My dream guy Brad takes such good care of you."
Apparently, Mia had been watching everything.
Luckily, Brad and I were just friends, or she'd never let me live it down.
I said, "When will you stop spying? If you like it so much, spy on your own Benjamin. Why always Brad? Aren't you afraid Benjamin will get jealous?"
We hadn't seen each other all vacation. Video calls during New Year weren't the same as face-to-face.
I was just teasing since Mia was always making up stories about Brad and me.
But then Mia's expression turned bitter.
"What happened?" I asked.
"Nothing, Benjamin and I broke up," Mia forced a smile.
"Broke up? Why? This isn't a game. There must be a reason. We've only been apart for less than two months, and you broke up?"
Mia silently helped hang my clothes, looking so sad it hurt my heart.
I noticed her swollen face and red eyes, clearly from crying.
I grabbed the clothes from her and made her sit. I touched her cold face. "What happened? If you want to talk, I'm here. Don't keep it all in."
As soon as I spoke, Mia's eyes welled up, and she started crying on my shoulder.
She bit her lips, trying not to make a sound, but her small body trembled with silent sobs.
"Alright, don't cry. If you don't want to talk about it, that's fine. Did you have dinner? Brad ordered food; it should be here soon. Join me."
Mia shook her head, tears falling like shattered glass, making my heart ache.
After comforting her for a bit, the delivery guy called. I hadn't showered yet, so I threw on my coat and ran downstairs to get the food.
Brad had ordered a huge portion, enough for three people.
That was Brad, always thinking ahead. Otherwise, Mia and I might have gone to bed half-hungry tonight.
"Mia, you can cry later. Come eat first. Brad ordered Polish dumplings."
Mia didn't want to eat, but I finally got her to sit down and have dinner with me.
Just as I finished my fourth dumpling, Brad called. "How are the Polish dumplings?"
"Delicious, so tasty." I exaggerated, smacking my lips so he could hear.
Brad chuckled. "Don't stuff yourself, or you won't sleep well. By the way, how's your roommate doing?"
Why was Brad suddenly concerned about Mia? That was odd.
"What are you thinking? Benjamin's been down since I got here. According to an insider, it's been going on for days."
Oh, right, Benjamin and Brad were roommates.
"She's okay, I guess. She ate five dumplings, but her eyes are swollen from crying."
Brad said, "Yeah, you and Mia are close. Try to comfort her. Some things are destined and can't be changed. It's better for her to move on when she knows it's a dead end."
"Oh, I got it." Brad's words left me feeling heavy-hearted.
After we all started hanging out, we found out Benjamin was a rich kid from a wealthy family.
You could tell from the fact that he drove a car worth millions to college.
Mia's parents were ordinary employees with modest incomes.
It was tough for Mia, from such a humble background, to fit into Benjamin's prestigious family.
I've read enough romance novels to know that kids from families like Benjamin's, who seemed so wealthy and unattainable, were actually quite pitiful. They couldn't choose their own marriages, which was really unfortunate.
What's the point of spending a lifetime with someone they didn't love, no matter how much money they made?
That was their fate. When it came to interests, love didn't matter. As long as the business grew and the family status rose, everything else could be used as a tool for gaining benefits. Marrying off kids was the best way to climb the social ladder.
Benjamin was likely bound by this iron rule, and Mia, foolishly in love with him, was destined for a tough path.
But love had no reason. Once it came, no matter who it was, they'd go all in, like me, like Daniel, like Zoe, and like Mia.
