Chapter 224 Jenny
"I got it. But chill, we got Yancy. He’s got our backs. By the way, Brad, you still stuck in the hospital?" After I spilled my stuff, it was my turn to grill him.
Brad didn’t hold back. "Yeah, the surgery went okay, but who knows how well she’ll bounce back. The doc said even if she fully recovers, rehab’s gonna be a nightmare. She’s in mad pain right now. Jenny’s in a funk, and there’s no one solid around. Since she’s a schoolmate and got hurt ‘cause of me, I gotta look after her."
"Jenny? The girl you were holding that day was Jenny?" Hearing her name, a long-lost smile flashed in my mind. Suddenly, a bad feeling hit me.
Brad was all about his savior, but was it just gratitude, or was it ‘cause it was Jenny?
So, during Brad’s month-long exchange in Silverbrook City, he was always with Jenny.
I remembered the voice I heard during the video call when Brad first went to teach.
It was Jenny. No wonder it sounded so familiar.
When I didn’t know who it was, I could chalk Brad’s actions up to responsibility.
But knowing it was Jenny, my heart went haywire, and my stomach twisted.
Jenny had a thing for Brad back in school, and I even played messenger for her love letters. Though Brad turned her down back then, years later, they had this crazy reunion abroad and faced life and death together. Brad’s extra care for her was definitely a red flag.
My gut told me Jenny’s injury wasn’t simple, and what would go down between the three of us would be even messier.
"What’s on your mind? Why so quiet?" Brad raised an eyebrow at me.
I was thinking about what he really felt for Jenny, but these were just my hunches. I couldn’t just blurt them out; I didn’t wanna say hurtful stuff without reason.
I tried to focus but replied weakly, "I’m kinda worried about Jenny, Brad. Can I video call her?"
Brad thought for a sec and gently shot me down. It was the first time he clearly refused me, for Jenny, who liked him. "Better not right now. Jenny’s really down. Wait till she’s in a better mood, then you can talk to her, okay?"
It was ‘cause she was down that I wanted to talk to her. I wouldn’t upset her, so why not let me? I hadn’t done anything yet, and he was already shielding this girl.
Seriously, guys are all the same.
"I’m just concerned about Jenny, nothing else." I hid my little thoughts. Girls are naturally petty; it’s normal.
"Yeah, I know. I’m here, so don’t stress. Just take care of yourself and wait for me to come back."
"Alright then, take good care of Jenny. You don’t have to video call me all the time. If Jenny finds out and gets upset, it’ll be a hassle. Don’t worry about me; if anything happens, I’ll ask Adam for help. By the way, if you need more cash, let me know. Jenny saved your life, so we should cover her medical bills, nutrition, and lost wages. Don’t be cheap."
Brad might’ve caught the hint in my words but couldn’t argue. He gave me a half-smile, his eyes a mix of fierce and seductive.
I admitted I mentioned Adam on purpose.
If he could hang with Jenny, why couldn’t I ask Adam for help? After all, we were still just schoolmates, nothing shady.
He couldn’t be the only one allowed to have friends of the opposite sex while I couldn’t.
Though Brad was ticked off, he hung up. I tossed my phone on the couch, and when I turned around, there was Adam, smirking. My face went beet red.
Awesome, I used Adam as an excuse, and he heard it. Now I looked all sneaky. Not cool.
The pasta came out quick, and Adam and I each got a bowl.
I started munching on my pasta, and a big ol' shrimp popped up in my bowl. Just as I was about to bite into it, shell and all, Adam swiped it.
"Why? You got shrimp in your bowl too. Why take mine?" I was already feeling down, and now he took my shrimp. Couldn’t I just eat my pasta in peace?
Why was everyone picking on me?
Tears started to well up.
"Why are you crying? It’s just a shrimp. Chill, I’m not taking it; I just wanna peel it for you."
Adam’s nimble fingers twisted off the shrimp’s head and started peeling the shell. Art students always had those pretty hands.
I had a sudden idea. I grabbed my phone and snapped a pic, then posted it with a caption.
The pic showed a half-peeled shrimp and two beautiful hands. The caption read: "Repay a life-saver with your body."
The pic and caption didn’t really match, but I figured someone would get it.
After we finished the pasta, Adam and I exchanged Facebook before he took off.
Mia was all over the place emotionally, making Yancy worried, so he insisted on staying. Problem was, there were only two bedrooms, so Yancy had to crash on the couch again.
It wasn’t the first time he slept on the couch, but back then, we thought he was just a regular college kid like us, so it didn’t seem like a big deal. Now that we knew he was living the high life, making him sleep on the couch again felt kinda wrong. It felt like we were being unfair to Yancy. The pressure was real.
I figured Yancy had only ever crashed on a couch in our tiny place. For him, it might be a new and uncomfortable experience. Luckily, he rolled with it, showing no signs of being bothered, even seeming to enjoy it.
The couch wasn’t very long, and Yancy’s legs stuck out a lot when he lay on it. I couldn’t help but tease him, "Yancy, don’t you have mansions and big beds at home? Why suffer here? Don’t you feel bummed?"
Yancy patted the pillow and grinned. "Jane, as long as I’m with Mia, even a couch feels like heaven. I’d be happiest if I could sleep here every day."
"Yancy, I’ve always wanted to ask you. Considering your family background and age, you’re way above Mia. Why do you like her? Can I trust you?"
Yancy got interested, turning over and half-laying on the couch, blinking like he was ready for a heart-to-heart. "Jane, do you believe in love at first sight?"
I smiled, "I’ve heard that all love at first sight is just liking a pretty face. Mia and I have been friends for years, and our bond is deep. So, if you're just into her looks, I advise you to stop. If you dare to hurt her, I won’t let you off."
Mia had a petite figure, delicate features, and a beautiful face that could make someone fall in love at first sight.
"I can’t stand to see her shed a single tear, let alone hurt her. Jane, I know you all think I’m too young and unreliable. But you can’t judge a book by its cover. Although Benjamin is older, his character leaves much to be desired. As for me, I’m the kind of guy who, once in love, will stay loyal forever. Unless she doesn’t want me, I won’t leave her. So, Jane, I’m the one who can give Mia a lifetime of stability. Your most important task now is to help me win her over." Yancy finished and playfully winked at me.
