Chapter 433 Suspicion

If Jenny claimed she did this purely for the sake of collaboration, I wouldn't buy it.

Brad had bruised her ego too many times before, and she was using the whole "cooperation" thing as an excuse to mess with him and settle some personal scores. It was totally on purpose.

It seemed the Taylor family didn't put much effort into raising their kids right; otherwise, they wouldn't have ended up with someone like Jenny, who eagerly became someone else's mistress. Jenny even stooped so low to drug Brad, which was just gross.

"Doesn't Jenny like you? She always says she's had a thing for you for years. Why's she still so mean to you?"

Brad replied, "I never really thought about what Jenny felt for me in the past. Now, I don't think she likes me; it's more like a creepy possessiveness towards someone she thinks is great. As for why she wants to possess me, I haven't figured that out yet."

"Why else," I pinched the soft flesh on his waist out of jealousy, making him wince, "it's because of your handsome face. Your face is too alluring!"

"That's true. After all, I've been scheming to win you over since I was six. Luckily, I succeeded; otherwise, I would've planned to grow old alone."

Brad smoothly changed the subject and flattered me at the same time.

We were having a great chat when someone rang the doorbell. Brad got up to open the door, and the delivery guy handed over a meal box and a bouquet of roses.

I looked at the table full of delicious food but had no appetite because I knew that after the meal, Brad would leave again.

No matter what happened last night, Brad and Jenny's contract was still in place, and the cooperation between the school and the Taylor family was still ongoing.

From any angle, he had to go back to Jenny and continue his unfinished business.

The meal was tasteless, and Brad tried to persuade me several times but ultimately said nothing, only gently asking me to eat a little more. He said I had lost weight, and it made him feel bad.

Even though I deliberately dragged out the time, the meal eventually ended. I put down my fork, feeling a pang of discomfort in my chest.

Before this, Brad's phone had been buzzing non-stop. He only looked at it the first time and then placed it face down on the table, ignoring it.

Seeing Brad's expression, I didn't need to guess who was calling.

Jenny holding off until now to call was quite impressive; most people wouldn't have that kind of patience.

Brad easily read my mind and, with a touch of pride, explained once more how, as a boyfriend, he cleverly used both wit and strategy to keep his chastity.

"She prepared a whole bottle of wine spiked with aphrodisiacs. After two glasses, I felt something was off, so I switched our glasses when she wasn't looking. Later, everyone at the table tactfully left early. She then told me she liked me and asked me not to reject her. She didn't want any status, just to be with me. I found it disgusting and knocked her out."

I was so shocked that I started coughing.

Someone like Jenny, who held grudges, would see Brad's actions as a major slap in the face. She wouldn't just let that slide; she'd definitely find a way to get back at him, and it wouldn't be pretty.

How much more would Brad have to endure in the future?

The call connected, and Brad put it on speaker. Jenny's voice came through loud and clear.

Jenny used to have this soft, gentle tone.

But today, she sounded totally different. Her voice was hoarse, like she was exhausted.

The words she said should've been full of complaints, but all I heard was anger and helplessness.

"Brad, didn't see you at the club last night. Sleep well?"

I rolled my eyes. Wasn't that an obvious question?

"Thanks to you, I had a wonderful night, probably the best night of my life," Brad replied.

Jenny went silent, and all we could hear was her breathing.

I couldn't help but laugh. I could just imagine the look on Jenny's face after hearing that.

"I called to remind you that the 3 PM meeting is very important. Don't be late," Jenny said before hanging up the phone.

Brad left, leaving me alone on the large hotel bed, silently crying.

He said he'd come back, and I said I'd wait for him.

I didn't ask when we'd see each other next or if I could call or video chat with him. It was just plain and simple. He said he was leaving, and I said goodbye.

Because not every question had an answer, and some answers had long been planted in our hearts.

Goodbyes were always sad. I didn't know when these days would end. How long did he have to repay that damn debt of gratitude?

Lately, I'd been wondering, what made someone as selfish and cunning as Jenny save Brad without hesitation when danger came, even at the risk of her own life? Did she really love Brad so much that she didn't care about her own life?

If Jenny were the heroine of a novel, I might believe it. But after spending time with her, I knew what kind of person she was. Perhaps she was even more insidious than I knew, which made me question her actions back then.

In less than twenty-four hours, I experienced the fastest-paced mix of emotions in my life.

At 2:55 PM, Brad sent me a message saying he was safe and asked me to wait patiently. He said this would all be over soon.

Fatigue washed over me, and I slowly drifted into sleep.

When I woke up again, it was already the next morning.

There was an unread message on my phone from Brad, reminding me not to forget to eat.

Had Brad finally broken free from the shackles, ignored that two-year contract, and escaped Jenny's mental hold?

Given Jenny's nature, would she come up with even more vicious ways to deal with Brad? If she continued to leverage the debt of gratitude, would Brad compromise again?

That damn life-saving debt!

Elliot's call came at just the right time to interrupt my thoughts. "Do you still want to continue your career?"

Of course, I did.

I packed up and headed to the location Elliot specified. Elliot was crouched on a hillside, bent over studying a red ochre rock.

When he saw me coming, he excitedly raised the rock and waved it at me with bright eyes.
