Chapter 246: Guardianship
Brad and I shot each other a look and both wrinkled our noses at the same time. It was a tiny move, but it showed we were totally in sync.
Yancy and Mia saw us and burst out laughing. Mia, even though she was sick, couldn't help but laugh hard.
I shook my fist at her, but Yancy put down his fork and gently held Mia, stopping me. Brad just watched us, a little smile in his eyes.
He messed up my hair and fed me a piece of meat, telling me to eat up.
We hadn't seen each other in days, and Brad was being extra sweet.
I sneaked a glance at Jenny. Her two sidekicks were eating like they hadn't seen food in forever, while Jenny clutched her fork, looking super annoyed.
"Mia's sick too? What's she got?" Jenny butted in again.
I couldn't figure out why Jenny kept stirring the pot on my turf. What was her deal? Who gave her the guts? Even an idiot would know she couldn't win, so why did she keep trying?
Mia's face went cold, and just as she was about to say something, I grabbed her hand to stop her.
She had my back earlier, now it was my turn to have hers.
"It's nothing, just got bit by a rabid dog. It was pretty bad. She had to get a rabies shot. The wound hurts, so she's gotta rest at home for a few days."
Yancy cracked up, comparing Benjamin to a mad dog, which he found hilarious.
Yancy put a bowl of warm porridge in front of Mia and handed her a shiny spoon. "Eat up, there's more in the pot. You need to eat more."
Brad wasn't into drinking or making a big deal out of things. Since the convo died down, everyone just focused on eating.
But Jenny still wanted the spotlight.
"Mia, your boyfriend is really something, young, handsome, and so thoughtful. I'm super jealous." Jenny said, munching away. "Where are you from, handsome? You look familiar."
Yancy looked up and gave a cool smile. "Thanks, Miss Jenny, for your kind words. I hope to be Mia's boyfriend soon."
Yancy totally ignored the second part of Jenny's question, like he didn't want her to know who he was or talk to her more. I didn't get why, but we were on the same team, so I had his back.
Brad seemed really hungry. He just kept getting food for me and himself, barely talking.
Throughout the meal, it was mostly Mia and Jenny chatting. After the small talk, Mia mainly bragged about how Brad spoiled me, how great he was to me, and all the sweet things he did.
Even with Jenny's good manners, her smile was almost gone by the end.
Mia hardly let me get a word in, so I just focused on eating.
This was the real Mia, fearless and ready to protect what she cared about no matter what.
After dinner, it was pitch dark. Mia, having done her job of protecting me, was taken back to her room by Yancy to rest. Jenny looked wiped out too. She said she was too tired and asked Brad to take her and her sidekicks to rest.
As she said this, her face showed more weariness, and her right hand subtly tapped her leg covered by a blanket.
"My bad, I'll take you to the hotel now. Babe, pack up, let's go together."
Hearing the first part, Jenny's eyes lit up, but after hearing the rest, the light faded, replaced by barely hidden annoyance.
Alright, knowing when to back off and avoid drama, I'd just cut Brad's probation period a bit.
I happily trotted back to my room to change. Just as I yanked off my T-shirt, Brad barged in. Seeing me half-naked, his eyes darkened with that familiar look of hunger.
I remembered our steamy kiss from not too long ago, and my face went beet red. Back then, I had clothes on, which felt like a safety net. Now, with just a bra, I was worried Brad might lose control.
Brad shut the door tight and leaned against it, making sure we were alone. He walked over, and with my eyes widening, he pulled me into a hug. His big hands gently roamed my bare back, while his lips trailed kisses along my shoulders and spine.
The thin straps of my bra were getting all kinds of messed up. I didn't know how Brad felt, but I was definitely flustered.
My legs turned to jelly, and I leaned into him, weakly reminding him that people were waiting for us.
Brad's face twisted with frustration. He gritted his teeth and dressed me with heavy hands. He quickly opened the suitcase, grabbed the documents, and held my hand as we walked out.
He stomped down the hall, each step echoing loudly.
I scratched my head, confused. Was he mad because he didn't get what he wanted?
We hurried to the staircase. Yancy popped out and asked if we were coming back. I said yes, but Brad said no.
Learning to contradict me now, huh? Just wait, Brad.
As we headed downstairs, Brad suddenly yanked me over and bit my lip hard, then whispered, "Baby, I don't care if I'm officially your boyfriend or not, but tonight, I'm gonna make love to you."
Before I could react, Jenny and her crew caught up, cutting off the conversation.
We headed out to find a hotel.
Brad mentioned the doctor he booked would see Jenny on Monday morning, so he found a hotel near the hospital. He said it would be convenient for both treatment and care.
Jenny played it cool, saying nothing and just following Brad's lead.
In the hotel lobby, we sat on the sofa waiting while Brad booked the rooms.
Jenny, in her wheelchair, had her tall sidekick push her around. She claimed she wanted to admire the lobby's decor but really just made a beeline for Brad.
Brad smiled politely but didn't say a word.
When we took Jenny to her room, I found out Brad had booked a large suite for the three of them, saying it was Jenny's request. This made me even more curious about their relationship, but it wasn't the right time to ask.
After settling Jenny in, I left the room first. As Brad passed by Jenny, she grabbed his sleeve like she had something to say. Brad calmly pulled his sleeve back and told the sidekicks to take good care of her.
The moment the door closed, I saw the disappointment on her face.
"Brad, let's hit the restaurant row, okay?" Adam said there's this killer restaurant there, and the food is to die for. I had eaten there once before and couldn't forget it. Even though we had a big dinner, it wasn't satisfying with outsiders around. Making up for that seemed super important.
At that time, I didn't know I was actually Brad's most delicious dish.
Brad walked slowly, lagging a couple of steps behind. Maybe he didn't hear me clearly, so he didn't answer.
Just as I was about to ask again, he suddenly smirked. He took two steps forward and scooped me up, carrying me into the elevator.
