Chapter 85 Loneliness
"Wouldn't it be easier if your grandma lived with you?" I asked.
Louis, sitting by my bed, fed me a spoonful of porridge. "I think so too, but Grandma won't leave Sunhaven. She grew up there and wants to be buried there. It's about the house she and Grandpa picked together. To her, as long as the house stands, it's like Grandpa's still with her."
"So, Grandma now..." I started eating the porridge myself. Louis set up the small table on my hospital bed and said softly, "Grandma's wish came true."
"I'm sorry, I didn't know," I apologized.
"Last winter, Grandma passed away. I buried her next to Grandpa so they could be together forever. I think she'd be happy," Louis said, his voice heavy with emotion.
Louis, raised by his grandmother, was clearly heartbroken. He sat in the shadows, tears welling up in his eyes.
Seeing him so lonely, my heart ached. I reached out and held his hand. "Don't be sad. Grandma's watching over you. When are you going back? I'll go with you to visit her, okay?"
Louis looked up, surprised, and held my hand tightly. His hands were big, warm, and strong.
My face heated up, and I knew I was blushing. I tried to pull my hand back, but he wouldn't let go. My heart pounded like a drum.
After a few tries, I gave up and let him hold my hand. Seeing him so sad softened my heart. I wanted to comfort him.
"Jane, I'm really happy. Thank you," Louis said, pressing my hand to his face, his eyes full of affection.
Just holding hands made him so happy. It seemed he was easily satisfied.
"Jane, I'll make you fall in love with me, just as deeply as I love you," Louis said.
I didn't respond, too shy to look at him. I tried to pull my hand back again, but he held it tighter.
After a day of observation, the doctor said I could be discharged.
Louis wasn't happy and grumbled, "What kind of hospital is this? How can you be fine after getting soaked in the rain? You should stay a few more days."
I laughed, "Do you really want me to be sick that badly?"
"No, I just don't want you to leave. Once you go back to your apartment, I can't be with you all the time. I don't want to be apart from you," Louis explained.
Watching Louis reluctantly pack my things, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
He held my hand and walked me to my apartment building, whispering sweet nothings until I was too embarrassed to lift my head. Only then did he let me go inside.
"I'll video call you tonight. Wait for me," Louis said, looking reluctant as I walked away. His gaze made my heart melt.
'This boy who's cared for me since we were kids might just be my future,' I thought.
My apartment was on the third floor. Even though there was an elevator, I usually took the stairs. It wasn't too high, so it wasn't tiring, and I used it as a way to stay fit since I hadn't exercised much lately.
As I turned into the stairwell, I heard a voice say, "So lovey-dovey, how far have you two gotten?"
I knew it was Mindy, dripping with jealousy.
"We're already holding hands!" I said, turning around. Her face turned pale with anger, and I laughed heartily.
Mindy swung her expensive handbag at me, but I dodged and tickled her, then ran upstairs.
I was tall with long legs and ran fast. Mindy, shorter and in high heels, couldn't catch up and was soon out of breath.
By the time I got back to my room and let my hair down, she was still panting at the door.
"Mindy, your fitness level is terrible. You need to work on it. Take your time catching your breath; I'm going to take a shower."
I had fainted in the hospital last night without showering and hadn't changed my underwear. I felt so gross.
When I came out of the shower, Mindy was lying on the bed, crying.
"What's wrong? I was in the hospital for a whole day and night, but you didn't come to see me. Now you're drowning me in your tears as soon as I get back. Isn't the rain enough?" I sat on Mindy's bed, drying my hair, and kicked her butt.
Mindy's best feature was her butt, perfectly shaped and well-toned.
When I kicked her, the flesh on her butt jiggled, a silent temptation.
I couldn't resist kicking her again.
Mindy rubbed her eyes on the bedsheet, then turned over and looked me up and down. "You seem fine. You're not just pretending to be sick to get Louis to care for you, are you? Jane, you're so sneaky. We agreed to compete fairly, no dirty tricks."
I laughed and told her what happened last night. In the end, I concluded, "Why don't you find a rainy day and lie in a mud puddle? Given your long-standing friendship with Louis, he might care for you even more."
Mindy said, "Get lost. If the mud puddle is so great, why did you come out? If you turned into a fish and swam away, I'd be totally fine with that."
Mindy was cheerful, and I was easygoing. We soon started goofing around, and Mindy quickly forgot about crying.
After a while, Mindy started crying again.
I couldn't believe it. How could someone as beautiful, stylish, rich, and attractive as Mindy cry so much?
Mindy told me about her childhood memories with Louis, even mentioning how they used to pee in the mud together.
Listening to a girl who admired my suitor talk about her past with him, a past I wasn't part of, I didn't know how to feel or what to say.
Mindy explained, "Jane, I'm not telling you this to make you uncomfortable. I just want to share. I like Louis so much, but why can't he see it? Especially after you showed up, he won't even look at me. Do you think I'll ever have a chance with him? Should I keep pursuing him?"
