Chapter 494 The Actor

Uriah was really bummed out when we said no.

A week before the big thesis defense, the school threw this huge special contribution award ceremony for the past decade, and guess what? Both Brad and I got honored.

That day was probably the highlight of my life.

When I stepped onto the stage, grabbed the mic, and looked out at the sea of teachers and students, the applause was so loud it made me feel like a rockstar.

My speech was short, maybe five minutes tops. Just as I was about to step down, I saw Brad coming towards me with a bunch of bright red roses.

The lights dimmed, and a few spotlights lit up, making it feel like it was just Brad and me in our own little world.

Brad stopped a couple of steps away, holding the flowers in one hand and pulling out a dark red velvet box from his pocket with the other. Inside was this gorgeous vintage-style diamond ring.

He said, "Jane, loving you is something I want to do forever. I hope you can trust me with your life, and believe that I'll love you with everything I've got. Jane, will you marry me?"

He got down on one knee and proposed again.

The first proposal was more for our parents.

But today, this was for me.

He wanted to make it official in front of everyone.

I tried to smile, but tears came first.

Brad had given up so much for me.

It started with a few people chanting, then grew to a hundred, and soon the whole crowd was shouting, "Say yes!"

"Yes." I held out my hand, and Brad slipped the ring on my finger.

No wonder he didn't want me to wear a ring this morning; he had this one all planned out.

I don't know how many girls get two proposals and two rings from the same guy, but I sure did.

Everyone was recording with their phones, and soon the news of our engagement would be everywhere.

Thanks to this little surprise, the award ceremony was extra lively.

After it ended, people slowly made their way out through the side doors.

Brad held my hand as we walked, but suddenly, I felt this wave of unease. Brad noticed and asked if I was okay.

"No, I just feel really uneasy, like something bad is about to happen." I couldn't shake the feeling.

Brad held me close as we walked out into the square.

It was noon, the sun was shining bright, and the square was packed with people.

Suddenly, the crowd parted, creating a narrow path.

Jenny, wearing flats and holding a baby, walked slowly towards us.

Her eyes were locked on Brad.

My heart was pounding like crazy.I instinctively stepped to the left, putting myself between Brad and Jenny.

Jenny's eyes were glued to Brad, not even blinking.

"Feeling nervous, Jane? Scared?" Jenny paused, gently patting the baby in her arms, and asked with a teasing smile.

"What do I have to be afraid of?" I shot back with a sarcastic smile, but my eyes were fixed on the baby in Jenny's arms.

It wasn't particularly warm this season, but Jenny, holding a baby in front of so many people, was clearly waiting for Brad and me. What was she up to?

I remembered the stunts Jenny had pulled before and couldn't help but feel a bit scared.

Jenny was a lunatic. When all her previous schemes failed, she vanished. That, in itself, was a huge red flag.

I said, "I wonder what brings you to campus. If you have something to say, just say it."

"Brad." Jenny suddenly got all emotional. The eyes that had once been filled with disdain and resistance when they looked at me now glistened with two squeezed-out tears.

Jenny said, "How are you? Even though you hurt me so badly, I still miss you. I see your face even in my dreams."

Hearing this, I almost threw up.

Brad's face immediately darkened. "Ms. Taylor, please don't make up stories. This will give me nightmares and show everyone your true colors."

Someone in the crowd suddenly laughed.

I admired Brad; he said it so simply yet so powerfully.

Jenny said, "Brad, after all these years, have you really never liked me at all? Yes, I did a lot of wrong things. But I did it all because I loved you. Don't be mad at me. Today, in front of so many people, I formally apologize to you. Will you forgive me? Please."

She was quite the actress; tears came down as soon as she wanted.

"Shut up." Brad was seething, his eyes burning with anger and his fists tightly clenched. I sensed that if Jenny weren't a woman, he might have lunged at her, ready to strike and leave her bleeding on the spot. "It's one thing to apologize for your mistakes, but don't even mention love. Your love makes my skin crawl." His words were brutal.

Jenny's face turned pale instantly.

"Jenny, you and I have no past or future, and there never will be. Please have some dignity and stop making up stories to mislead everyone. To me, you are nothing but an irrelevant person. I don't want to use the word 'shameless' to describe a woman, out of my own decency. Move aside, and don't block our way home." With that, Brad took my hand and resolutely walked around Jenny.

"Brad, don't go. Do you really not want me anymore? You can't be so heartless." Jenny's voice was shrill and piercing.

I had never seen a woman as shameless as Jenny.
