Chapter 289: Accusation
"I didn't even know you bought a bracelet, so how could I have swiped it? Besides, bracelets are a dime a dozen; it's not like there's only one in the world. What makes you think mine is yours? Got any proof? I know you got a thing for Jane and you're all about her, and I get it. I've never blamed you for it; I came into the picture later, so I can't hold it against anyone. But you can't just stomp all over my pride 'cause I got a crush on you. Liking you isn't a crime."
Jenny sobbed, her tears barely held back.
She had the nerve to talk about pride. If Jenny really cared about pride, she wouldn't have done all those nasty things. Hearing "pride" from her was just plain hilarious.
A woman, probably Luna from Jenny's words, spoke up, "Mr. Pitt, you really got it wrong about Miss Jenny. I saw her pay for that bracelet with my own eyes. I swear on it."
Brad's smile was cold, his voice smooth but his words cutting, "Is your swear worth anything? Do I need a babysitter to explain when I'm talking to Jenny? Jenny, if you knew me at all, you'd know I wouldn't call you out without solid proof.
Before I came here, I hit up that boutique. Their cameras are crystal clear. Wanna watch it together? The reason I'm asking you instead of calling the cops is 'cause we went to the same school, and you saved my life. Otherwise, you and Luna would be at the police station right now."
So it was Jenny who did it.
After a moment of silence, there was a faint hissing sound and the voices of a man and a woman.
I stood outside the door, straining to hear. I guessed Brad was playing that high-def video on his phone.
At this point, there was no need for me to confirm anything further, and no need to hide.
Since I was here, I couldn't let Brad face them alone.
Pushing open the door, I walked into the hospital room under everyone's gaze, then stood next to Brad.
My appearance shocked everyone except Brad.
Jenny's face was a mix of embarrassment and anger. Her hands, which had just wiped away tears, were now clenched into fists, so tight her knuckles turned white.
Only Brad smiled subtly when he saw me come in, like he knew I'd show up.
After the video finished playing, Jenny's expression was particularly ugly. The people around her were also embarrassed and didn't know what to do.
"Got anything else to say, Jenny? I told you, you saved my life, and I'm grateful. I'll repay you and put up with you as much as I can. But that doesn't mean you can do whatever you want. Every pointless scheme you pull is eating away at my gratitude.
I'm really disappointed in you this time. I reserve the right to sue you, and I hope there won't be a next time. Your low-level tricks can't come between Jane and me. That's all I have to say. What you do next is up to you. We'll come see you when we can. Take care."
"Brad, don't make me sound so terrible. I just love you too much. My love for you is no less than Jane's. Why can't you look back at me? I can give you things that Jane never can. I'm the one who's truly right for you."
Jenny suddenly cried out, her tear-filled eyes full of accusations towards Brad. Her pitiful look made Brad seem like the bad guy who had wronged her deep feelings.
Crying was Jenny's go-to move. Whenever she couldn't handle a situation, she'd turn on the waterworks to shift the focus and get herself out of trouble.
This time was no different. Jenny used her tears to spin her shady actions into the desperate moves of a heartbroken girl.
Gotta admit, Jenny's tactic worked pretty well, but it was getting old real fast.
Brad's eyes were filled with deep annoyance and frustration.
He took a deep breath to pull himself together, then said, "Jenny, I think I've been crystal clear about this, both now and before. And I believe I've never led you on. Why are you so stubborn? You say you love me too much, but is this how you show it? 'Cause if it is, your love is pretty scary."
"Because you never gave me a chance, otherwise, why would I do all this? You think I enjoy being like this? Everything I've done was just to get your attention. I had no choice. You ignored me, always ignored me. Your indifference turned me into this mess.
If you can't love me, why did you come back into my life? I was almost over you, and then you showed up again. How can you blame me? I can't control my heart. I just fell in love. Why make me sound so awful? What makes Jane better than me?" Jenny covered her eyes with her wrist and leaned back in her chair, crying her heart out.
As a woman, I felt a bit sorry for her. Love is supposed to be beautiful and pure, but using tricks to steal love that isn't yours is just low and gross.
Brad listened calmly to Jenny's rant. When she mentioned my name, his expression softened. "Honestly, I've often wondered what makes Jane so special that I've kept her in my heart for over twenty years. But no matter how much I think about it, I can't find an answer. As long as I see her or think of her, she feels perfect, and no one else can compare.
Jenny, for the rest of my life, it's Jane or no one. I appreciate that you love me, but I can't return those feelings. So, don't waste your heart on me; it's not worth it. The world is huge, and there's definitely a guy out there who's perfect for you."
I didn't know if Jenny heard Brad's words, but she switched to covering her mouth and crying silently, mumbling stuff that was hard to make out.
Maybe it was her tears, but the coldness in Brad's demeanor started to fade, though the irritation in his eyes stayed. "Jenny, stop doing these pointless things. The doctor said that if you stick to your rehab, you can fully recover in a few months. It might be a long and painful process, but Jane and I will be there for you. We can have a lifelong friendship."
"Can you really not love me? I don't want friendship; I just want you to love me." Jenny cried out in despair, her face soaked with tears.
"Sorry, Jenny, but in this lifetime, I can't love anyone other than Jane. The bracelet thing ends here. Since you like it, you can keep it. Consider it a gift from Jane and me. Now that Jane knows the truth, I've given her an explanation. She's always been forgiving and won't hold it against you. We're leaving now."
As we left, I glanced back. Jenny was leaning back in her chair, her face covered in tears, her eyes following Brad with a look of helplessness and unrequited love.
