Chapter 168: Matchmaking
Knowing I wanted to see Daniel, Brad kept quiet for what felt like forever. I thought he’d say no, but he just patted my head and told me to chill until my injury got better and Daniel’s condition was more stable. Even if I went now, I’d just be staring at the ICU door, not actually seeing him.
Later that evening, Helen was trying to feed me porridge. I really tried to tell her I could do it myself since my right hand was fine, but she almost started crying when I said that.
So, I had no choice but to take the spoonful of sweet porridge from her. When I looked up, there was Louis standing at the door with a big bouquet and a huge fruit basket. He smiled at me and politely said hi to Helen. Under her hesitant gaze, he walked in and introduced himself, "Helen, I'm Louis, a high school buddy of Jane's. Heard she got hurt and came to see if she needed anything."
Sofia was a kind soul, and her grandson Louis, who she raised herself, was just as polite, well-mannered, and gentle.
"Louis? That name rings a bell. From your accent, you’re from Sunhaven, right?" Helen offered him a seat, trying to remember more about him.
"Have you seen our high school grad photo? The chubby kid standing behind Jane, that’s me."
Helen suddenly slapped her forehead, laughing, "Oh! I remember that chubby kid. You’ve turned into quite the looker now. How’d you lose all that weight? Was it on purpose?"
Brad walked in and saw me struggling to eat porridge with one hand while Helen and Louis were chatting like old pals.
Louis was something else, making Helen laugh non-stop. Impressive.
"Why do you look so pale? Is your wound hurting? Alright, put it down, I’ll feed you." Brad shot a displeased look at Louis, greeted Helen, and then sat across from me, picking up the almost empty bowl and feeding me like no one else was there.
"No need, Brad, I’m almost done." I tried to grab the bowl, but he dodged and fed me the last spoonful, wiping the sweat off my nose.
After I swallowed the porridge, Brad shamelessly pecked my lips right in front of Helen and Louis. "You finished it all, good girl."
Since Brad became my probationary boyfriend, he’d kissed me a few times, but mostly on the forehead, cheeks, or nose. This was the first time he kissed me on the lips, and in front of Helen and Louis, no less. How could I not be embarrassed?
I wanted to chew him out for being so bold, especially with Helen right there. But when I looked up and saw the jealousy and warning in his eyes, the words just got stuck in my throat.
Fine, a kiss was a kiss. I’d just find a chance to kiss him back later. No way was he getting away with it.
The light in Louis’s eyes dimmed visibly.
Even so, I kept my face blank like I hadn’t noticed a thing.
If I couldn’t give him love, I shouldn’t give him hope. Better to cut it off cleanly.
Helen, totally clueless about the situation, sensed the change in the room’s vibe. She picked up the bowl and left to wash it, dodging the tension.
As soon as Helen left, Mindy walked in with bags of stuff.
She probably didn’t expect to see Louis. She looked flustered, awkward, and surprised, hesitating at the door, unsure whether to come in or leave.
I waved her in.
I nudged Brad, who was hogging space across from me, to sit with Louis, and Mindy took his place.
Mindy, being her outgoing self, had a great relationship with me despite seeing me as a rival in love. When she heard about my car accident, she freaked out and rushed over to see me.
She stared at my left arm, wrapped up like a mummy. "I saw the accident scene. That was a long skid mark. Jane, you’re really lucky to come out of that okay. By the way, how’s Daniel? Is he alright?"
I was about to answer, but Brad beat me to it, "His condition seems stable for now. If there are no issues tonight, he can be moved to a regular ward tomorrow."
Mindy then used every word she knew to praise Daniel’s heroic act.
I couldn’t interrupt her, but I cautiously glanced at Brad’s increasingly dark face.
Brad stealthily moved closer to me, focusing on massaging my other arm, openly staking his claim.
Louis avoided looking at me, staring at his toes instead.
Mindy hadn’t been sitting long when Louis, claiming he had another engagement, started to leave.
Seeing this, I tried to help Mindy. "Louis, it’s raining outside. Take Mindy with you. I don’t feel comfortable with her going back alone."
Louis paused at the door, saying nothing, and turned back to wait for Mindy.
"No need, I drove here myself. I never get home earlier than today when I go out. It’s unnecessary." Mindy waved her hands anxiously.
I blamed her in my heart.
I was trying to create an opportunity for her to be alone with Louis, and she couldn’t see it?
Annoyed, I didn’t say more and used my good right foot to kick her off the bed. "Just go when I tell you to. Why so much fuss?"
Out of Louis’s sight, I mouthed to her silently, 'This is all I can do for you. Seize the opportunity.'
Blushing, Mindy followed Louis out.
