Chapter 207: Breakup
Man, Benjamin had really sharpened his skills over the years, keeping his cool like a pro. That made him a beast in the business world, but it sure didn't make him boyfriend material.
Yancy tried to block him, but Mia stepped in.
Mia slid out from behind Yancy, giving Benjamin a calm look. "Spit it out right here. We got ten minutes; we need to grab some grub."
Benjamin's temples were throbbing, and his eyes were blazing with anger.
He was barely holding it together.
"Fine, I'll spill it here. Sydney's the chick my parents set me up with. You met her back then. She's been into me for years, but it's just a setup. I don't dig her. About the kid, I was wasted that night. When I woke up, I had no clue what went down. I was still on her, and we hadn't even separated."
Mia's body shook like a leaf, her eyes filled with raw pain. She bent over, curling up in agony.
My heart shattered for Mia. I walked over and held her shoulders, silently giving her my support.
I never bought the whole "too drunk to remember" excuse. It was just a lame cover for bad behavior.
Guys, they never wanted to own up to their screw-ups and instead dumped the blame on innocent women. It was disgusting.
Mia turned to me with a sad smile. It was beautiful but drenched in despair.
"Mia, whether you buy it or not, I really don't know what happened. It was just that one night, and she got knocked up. It's my kid. I did it, and I gotta own up to it.
I'm hurting too, Mia, but what can I do? That's my blood. I can't just ditch it. You're so kind; you gotta understand me, right?
Mia, come back with me. You can ask for anything: money, a house, a car, bling, whatever. Or if you want kids, that's cool. Have as many as you want; I'll take care of them all. They'll all be my precious treasures.
Just say it, and it's yours. And me, I can stay with you. Mia, trust me, I can give you everything in the world except a marriage certificate. I won't break my promise."
Benjamin spoke like he meant it, but to me, it was a total joke.
How could he say such shameless stuff so easily? Did he ever really see Mia as someone he loved?
Mia's years with him were a total waste.
"Benjamin, shut the hell up. You're a freaking jerk. Get lost, now." I was fuming and cursed at him without thinking.
Benjamin's face twisted in anger, but he still stood there, stubbornly waiting for an answer.
Probably, he'd never been cursed at like this in his life. If it weren't me, he might've started a fight already.
Mia lowered her head and smiled, then looked up and said calmly, "Benjamin, I got a few questions for you. That day, when they caused a scene at my company, you left with Sydney without looking back. Do you know how I got up in front of over a hundred people?"
Benjamin's face went pale, and he said nothing.
"You ask me what I want. What I want is simple: a small two-bedroom apartment, a husband who comes home after work, going grocery shopping together, cooking together, naming our baby together, sitting on the beach watching the stars together. Can you give me that?
And about the kid, you said I could have as many as I want. But what’s their last name gonna be? You know kids without a dad get picked on, right? You feel good letting them carry the label of being illegitimate their whole lives?
And me, I’ve been with you since I was nineteen. I’m almost twenty-four now. Five years, no status, no recognition. There could be countless more five years ahead. Am I supposed to spend my whole life as your side chick, enjoying the wealth you throw at me, while taking endless crap, being seen as a shameless homewrecker? Is this your idea of love?
You keep saying I’m the only one you love. I should be happy, but your love hurts too much. I can’t take it anymore, and I don’t want it. Since you’re here today, I’ll make it clear. Benjamin, I don’t want anything from the past. We’re done.”
Benjamin’s face went frantic, his eyes filled with panic and embarrassment. He rushed forward, trying to grab Mia. “Mia, no, I never said you were a side chick. And You’re not a homewrecker. You’re the only one I love. I don’t want to break up. Don’t leave me.
Mia, I know you’re mad. Just hit me, curse me, but don’t leave me. Mia, I’ll give you everything I have. Come back with me. I’ll transfer all my assets to your name.
It was my bad for being with Sydney. Once she has the baby, I’ll move back in with you. I won’t touch her again, okay?
Come on, take my hand. Let’s go home together. Mia, let’s go home. I only love you in this life. Believe me.”
Mia suddenly burst into laughter, louder and louder, more and more sorrowful.
I looked at her sadly and held her tighter.
Benjamin, you still didn’t get what love was.
This Benjamin didn’t deserve Mia.
“Mia, say something. Your laughter is making me anxious. Everything I said is true. If I'm lying, may lightning strike me.” Benjamin was still swearing to the heavens.
“Enough, Benjamin.” Mia said, laughing uncontrollably. It took a while for her to stop. “I’ve said all I need to say. Let’s end it here. Don’t pester me anymore. Let’s give each other some dignity. Don’t make me regret loving you.”
“No.” Benjamin wailed in pain. “I know I was wrong. I don’t ask for your forgiveness, just don’t leave me. I won’t break up. You’re my life. How can I live without you? And you love me so much, you can’t bear to leave me, right? I know. You’re just mad. It’s okay. I’ll give you the chance and the right to be mad. You can punish me however you want. Just don’t break up. Didn’t we promise to be together forever?”
“The one who broke the promise is you, Benjamin. I do love you, very much. But all that love disappeared the moment you left with Sydney without looking back. For so many years, I stayed with you and waited for you wholeheartedly because I loved you. But you disappointed me time and again, abandoning me time and again, making my heart colder time and again. Your affair with her was just the last straw.”
“I love you, Mia. I love you, truly. That day, it was just... she was pregnant with my child. How could I not care for her? You’re so kind; you wouldn’t want to see me be so heartless, right?”
“Kind? If I don’t let you care for her, I’m not kind? Tell me, which woman would kindly watch her lover sleep with another woman, have children with another woman, leave with another woman while ignoring her? If it were you, Benjamin, could you do it?”
