Chapter 75 Go Down
The last get-together ended badly, but Louis's friends planned another one to apologize and invited both of us.
These were childhood friends, so "apologize" felt a bit much. Louis knew he overreacted and, after asking me, agreed to go.
Honestly, I didn't want to go. I never fit in with them. But Louis begged me, and I couldn't say no.
After eating, I stepped out for some air. When I came back, I overheard his friends talking about me.
"Louis, are you sure about her?"
"I decided a long time ago, and that's not changing," Louis replied.
"With her background, can she handle your family's expectations?"
Louis paused, then said, "I'll face it with her. If it comes to it, I'll give it all up. The Andersons don't own me."
"Don't be foolish, Louis. You two are from different worlds. The Anderson family won't let you do as you please. Mindy has both talent and looks, and she cares about you more than Jane does. Don't tell me you don't know how she feels about you."
Louis said, "So what if I know? Love is between two people. I can't return Mindy's feelings, and I don't want to waste her time. Don't bring this up again; I don't want Jane to be upset."
I realized then that Louis had lied about not knowing Mindy's feelings. He knew all along and lied to comfort me.
Whatever the reason, Louis wasn't truthful.
I felt heavy-hearted for the rest of the dinner.
We hadn't even started dating officially, and Louis was already lying. What would happen when the novelty wore off?
Louis's friends were right; we were from different worlds. Even with love, how far could we go?
My desire to try with Louis wavered that night.
Before I knew it, it was the holidays again.
On the afternoon of the 30th, students without classes were packing up to leave.
I had booked an early flight home to see my parents.
Louis had agreed to come with me, saying he missed everything there.
I wasn't sure about my relationship with Louis.
I decided that if Louis came to Sunhaven with me, I'd introduce him to my parents and let them help me decide.
After packing, I was debating whether to eat out or order in when the phone rang.
It was Louis.
"Jane, I'm sorry. Don't be mad. A company project we've been working on for years just got approved, and there's a lot to do. I can't go back with you. Can you manage on your own?"
I was disappointed.
I wanted to introduce Louis to my family. But a billion-dollar contract was obviously more important. Otherwise, he wouldn't have chosen work over coming with me.
"Don't worry about it. I can manage," I replied, hiding my feelings with a smile.
"Call me when you land, or I'll worry. I'll arrange a car to take you to the airport tomorrow morning."
My flight was at nine in the morning, and I was at the school gate by seven-thirty, waiting for Louis's car.
I saw Daniel and Zoe trying to hail a cab. It was early, and there weren't many cars around. They'd been trying for a while, and Zoe was getting frustrated.
"Miss Hanks, Mr. Anderson asked me to pick you up. Please get in the car, and I'll take you to the airport."
I put my backpack in the car, ready to leave, but seeing Daniel and Zoe struggling made me feel a bit guilty.
There was only one flight a day. If they missed it, they'd have to wait until tomorrow.
"Daniel, get in the car," I said.
Zoe eagerly dragged her suitcase over, clearly trying to curry favor. Daniel hesitated but then followed.
Once Zoe got in, she started touching everything, making the driver glance back at her. Daniel had to pull her into his arms to calm her down.
I saw Zoe looking smug in the rearview mirror. She was always like this—jealous and petty.
Ignoring her, I closed my eyes to rest. But Zoe kept dropping hints, saying that Daniel liked her and that others shouldn't get their hopes up.
I was amused. Did she think Daniel was some kind of trophy?
"Don't make me throw you out of the car," I said coolly.
Zoe immediately shut up.
On the highway, cars were packed with holiday travelers. If I threw Zoe and Daniel out, they'd never catch a taxi. They might miss the flight entirely.
When we got out, Daniel tried to help with my backpack, but I refused. I could carry it myself. I didn't need his help.
To my surprise, Brad came to pick me up. I hadn't seen him in three months and missed him.
He looked a bit thinner but still handsome.
"Brad, what are you doing here?" I ran over and hugged him, ignoring the curious looks from others.
Brad's frown relaxed, and he smiled warmly. "I finished my work and saved up some vacation days, so I came back early."
"Why didn't you tell me? I almost flew back to the Northern Institute of the Arts to find you," I pouted, making Brad smile even more.
"Brad," Daniel and Zoe came over, throwing their luggage into the trunk and climbing into the car. Zoe tried to sit in the front, but Brad coldly told her, "Get out."
Zoe had done it to annoy me, but seeing Brad's cold expression, she awkwardly moved to the back.
