Chapter 227: Tragedy

I dragged Benjamin to a quieter spot and plopped down. "Dude, she meant it when she said she wanted to be with you forever. You know better than anyone how much she loves you. But, have you ever thought about your future together? Like, have you planned when you'll meet her parents, get engaged, tie the knot, or how many kids you want?"

Benjamin frowned, looking at me like I was speaking another language. He was probably thinking, 'isn't loving Mia enough? Why complicate things?'

"You haven't thought about it, have you? That means she’s not in your future plans. Sure, you love her, and she loves you, but you love your status and wealth more. You never thought about giving her a real home; you just wanted a place to crash when you’re tired or bored.

But Mia’s a person, man. She’s got feelings, she can feel pain, disappointment, and despair. Your actions have hurt her deeply. Just making her your mistress has shattered her confidence in your love. You pushed her away with your actions; she had no choice but to leave. Now, nothing you do can fix it. Love isn’t just words; she needs to feel secure and like she belongs."

"It's my fault. I thought if I kept her in my heart, she’d know my love and stick with me forever. I thought giving her enough material stuff would make her feel secure. I thought she loved me so much she’d never leave. It’s my fault for not seeing things from her perspective. All the mistakes are mine. But Jane, my love for her is real and has never changed," Benjamin said, looking pained.

"But Benjamin, you got another woman pregnant, you promised your future to someone else, and you’re gonna build a home with her. What’s left after all that? You know the answer? It’s endless days of hopeless suffering.

Have you thought about it? If one day, you and your wife are holding your kid and you run into Mia holding hers, one kid calls you dad, and the other just watches from afar. One woman calls you dear, and the other can’t even look at you.

How would you feel at that moment? How would Mia feel? And that poor kid, would his young heart be hurt? Mia’s a person, a woman who loves you deeply and wants to spend her life with you. And you, what have you given her? You can’t even say.

No one can live like that. Mia can survive and live her life, and that’s already her greatest effort. Benjamin, let her go, let her live well."

The pain in Benjamin's eyes deepened, along with endless regret. But this was all his own doing!

I patted Benjamin's shoulder, a mix of reproach and comfort. "You’re not the one to give Mia happiness, let her go."

"I can't let go, five years, so many days and nights, she’s been a part of my life. How can I let go? How can I live without her?"

I had laid it all out there, but it was like Benjamin didn't hear a word I said.

I couldn't help but get pissed. After all the damage he caused, he still talked about deep love. What did that even mean? What did he take Mia for?

Did Benjamin think he was the king of the world? Why couldn't he think about Mia for once?

"You say you love Mia and can't live without her, right? Fine, if you can give up everything you have now—your family, money, that woman, and her unborn kid—just for Mia, then I'll talk to her and let her go with you, follow you forever. Can you do that?"

Benjamin looked like a deer in headlights, his eyes filled with sadness, and he looked embarrassed as hell. He couldn't even meet my gaze.

My heart sank, like it was weighed down by a block of ice, cold and suffocating.

How pathetic. Benjamin talked about love so deeply that I almost believed him, but when it came to choosing between power and love, he still chose power.

Ridiculous. His so-called deep love was always just his second choice.

"Look, it's a simple choice, A or B. What's your final pick? You don't need to say it, 'cause I can see the answer in your eyes. You take advantage of Mia's love for you, squandering her dignity and feelings. And your first choice will never be her. Got anything else to say?"

Benjamin smiled sadly, covering his eyes with his hand. "Nothing to say, I have nothing to say. Hurting her is the last thing I wanted, but I hurt her the most. It's my fault, it's my fault, my fault."

Benjamin stood up, turned around in pain, and left. His tall, thin frame looked as lost as a directionless mast in the summer sunlight.

"Don't come looking for her again, Benjamin," I shouted loudly.

He didn't look back or speak, just raised his right hand and waved.

Maybe Benjamin had let go, and that was good.

It was just that the fairy tale of the prince and Cinderella I once envied had ended in tragedy. Such a pity.

Even when I walked into Larry's office, I still felt sad, my chest tight with discomfort.

Love was a poison, and those who were poisoned found it hard to recover.

Larry saw me and motioned for me to come over, handing me a stack of documents and asking me to study them carefully and adjust the plan and creative direction as quickly as possible. The organizers were in a hurry.

"FutureVision is in breach of contract. Why should we agree to their demands?" With little social experience, I still had a sense of youthful righteousness, seeing the world in black and white and always wanting to stick to principles.

Larry, with his extensive knowledge and experience, had his own considerations for everything. Hearing my words, he gave me a disapproving look and said, "Now is the time to show your true abilities in the industry. Just focus on your work and pay less attention to other things. You're too young to be so calculative. Remember, the tougher the goal, the faster you'll grow."

I didn't dare to contradict Larry, but I didn't agree in my heart. Rules were rules; if they could be broken at will, why have them? Such a big company, changing its mind so easily—if they treated their clients like this, they might be close to bankruptcy.
