Chapter 153: Moving

Another "I'm sorry."

If a simple apology could make everything go away, then morality and law would lose their meaning.

A late apology is pointless.

I didn't want to deal with him, but then I thought, why should Brad and I be the only ones feeling bad? If we were going to feel bad, everyone should feel bad together. "The person you should be apologizing to is Brad."

Maybe Brad would bottle up his grievances and choose to forgive because, after all, they were his blood relatives.

But I couldn't bear it.

After moving into our new home, we planned to have a small family party.

Since there were still a few things left to move, Helen and I came over one morning to get the last batch, while Ronan was at home cooking.

I posted the house-for-sale ads which I paint myself on the front and back door and simultaneously posted it online.

I put some small items in my backpack. Standing at the door, I took one last look at the home I had lived in for over twenty years.

It was all in the past, time to look forward.

Helen and I walked out hand in hand, and as I was locking the door, we heard clear voices coming from the hallway.

What a coincidence.

Helen gave me an unwilling look, and I shrugged regretfully.

Since we couldn't avoid it, we might as well face it.

After all, we hadn't done anything wrong, so there was nothing to fear.

Emma was excitedly talking about what dishes to make, and as she stepped onto the stairs, she met our eyes at the door.

For a moment, her face was full of embarrassment.

Brad paused as he saw me, then pursed his lips unhappily, giving me a resentful look.

I rolled my eyes and raised my phone towards him. Brad made a goofy face at me.

To avoid bursting into laughter, I turned my face away and secretly chuckled. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Daniel's pale, cold, and gloomy face.

"Helen." Daniel greeted Helen.

He was supported by Hugh and looked in good spirits, though still very thin.

Helen nodded indifferently and quietly waited for them to enter.

The hallway wasn't wide enough, and with the four of them standing there, we couldn't get out.

"Helen, don't cook today. Since Daniel is out of the hospital, let's have a meal together." Emma said, forcing a smile.

Helen sneered, not even looking at her, and said directly, "No thanks. Are you going in or not? If not, move aside. We need to leave, don't block the way."

Emma's face turned red as she noticed the ad on the door. She tried to say something but couldn't, seeing Helen's cold and distant expression.

At this point, she probably felt there was nothing left to say.

"Let me carry the bag, Helen. I'll walk you out," Brad said, taking the bag from Helen's hand and holding my hand as he led us out.

As we passed Emma, I saw her lips move as if she wanted to say something, her eyes flickering. But in the end, she did nothing, just moved aside to make way for us.

"Mom, Dad, I'm taking Jane and Helen back. I won't be home for dinner tonight."

There was silence behind us; no one said a word.

Brad didn't mind. He just wanted to let his family know; whether they responded or not didn't matter.

He tossed the backpack in the trunk, opened the back door for Helen, helping her into the car. Seeing me trying to get into the back seat, he immediately lifted my arm and put me in the front passenger seat. Helen wisely pretended to be invisible after getting in, leaving space for Brad and me.

"Remember to think of me when you get there."

'Brad, don't say stuff like that in front of the elders. Besides, you're not even my boyfriend yet. Do you have to be so straightforward?' I thought, but I didn't dare to say it.

"You have to video call me every day."

"Okay."

"Don't interact with other boys."

"Okay."

He kept giving me endless instructions, making me more and more embarrassed, but he showed no signs of stopping.

I glanced at Helen through the rearview mirror. She had her head down, pretending not to hear anything. But her faint smile indicated she was openly eavesdropping and enjoying it.

I was very grateful to have such open-minded parents.

Despite Emma's outrageous actions, Helen never took it out on Brad or restricted my interactions with him. Most parents probably couldn't do that.

Ronan and Helen's generosity and broad-mindedness made Hugh and Emma's selfishness and narrow-mindedness even more apparent.

I had called Ronan in advance, and when the car arrived downstairs, Ronan was waiting to help us carry things.

Seeing Brad get out of the car, Ronan and Helen exchanged a look.

Ronan stepped forward, trying to carry stuff. "How much stuff is there that you had to trouble Brad? It's not good to bother others. Brad, thank you. Jane is just being thoughtless. You can go back now. Goodbye, and come over when you have time."

I raised my hand to cover my eyes and peeked at Brad through my fingers.

With such obvious disdain, I wondered if Brad would be angry.

"Ronan, my parents knew when I came over. I told them I wouldn't be back for dinner. Just let me carry the stuff up."

Before Ronan could react, Brad had already put the two big bags over his shoulders and led the way upstairs with ease.

Ronan looked bewildered and exchanged a glance with Helen, who couldn't help but laugh. As she passed Ronan, she pulled him along, and he reluctantly followed upstairs.

"This has nothing to do with Brad. What are you doing?" Helen cooed.

"I'm not against Brad; I'm just afraid Emma will find another excuse to cause trouble."

Ronan and Helen's concerns were not unfounded.

The next day, Brad came very early.

When he arrived, I was still lying in bed.

Brad stood at my bedroom door, called my name with a smile, and then turned to the kitchen to help Ronan and Helen cook.

He handled everything perfectly, making Ronan very pleased.

During this time, Brad's phone rang.

He took it out, having a glance, and his face darkened. He didn't answer and put it back in his pocket.

I never asked Brad how things were going with his family or if Emma had given him a hard time again. From his reaction, it didn't seem to be going well. But they were his family, and he couldn't just cut ties with them forever.
