Chapter 256: Diagnosis
So, this was the guy I wanted to be with forever.
Life's a long ride, and sure, he might get a bit distracted or confused sometimes, but he wouldn't let himself get totally lost.
He had this way of making me feel safe, always.
We had an appointment with this doc named Alexander Jensen. Tall dude, a bit on the heavier side, with these super expressive eyes. From the moment we met him, he was all smiles, making it super chill to be around.
After the check-up, Dr. Jensen stared at the X-rays for what felt like forever, then went through the reports and some diagnoses from Silverbrook City, taking almost forty minutes.
Finally, he said the surgery was a success, and Jenny's leg nerves were in good shape. What she needed now was some nerve nutrition and rehab training.
Dr. Jensen had this serious look the whole time he was going through the stuff, making me think things were really bad. I was freaking out, worried that if Jenny couldn't get better, it would be a disaster. Brad might never be able to make it up to her, and that was my biggest fear.
I was even more scared that the issue wasn't her leg but her heart.
I wasn't just overthinking; Daniel's situation was a constant reminder. Daniel was Brad's own brother, and he didn't hesitate to mess with Brad. Jenny and I were just schoolmates, no deeper connection. To win over the amazing Brad, she might do anything.
Luckily, the results were good, and I could finally relax.
But Jenny didn't seem too happy with the news. From the moment she walked into the doc's office, she was grumpy and wouldn't talk. Her two sidekicks, one tall and one short, were flanking her.
When Dr. Jensen said her surgery went great and she could recover quickly with some serious rehab, her face got all weird.
Suddenly, I had this gut feeling that maybe getting better was just Brad's and my hope. For Jenny, her messed-up legs were her secret weapon.
"Find a good rehab hospital. If you can't, I can recommend one. As long as she cooperates, she could be walking in a few months. The initial rehab might be painful, but it'll get better."
Brad had mentioned that the hospital in Silverbrook City also suggested rehab. But every time the nurse tried to help Jenny up, she screamed in pain and even fainted once, scaring everyone off from mentioning rehab again.
No one wants to be stuck in a wheelchair for life.
Back then, everyone thought the diagnosis from Silverbrook City was wrong, which was why Brad decided to bring her to Regalia for treatment.
When Brad told me all this, I was worried too. I had prepared for the worst, thinking if her leg couldn't be fixed, Brad and I would take care of her like family forever.
But in the end, we had oversimplified things. Not everyone wants to face the sunshine.
Dr. Jensen's words made us realize a lot.
Jenny actually knew about her condition. She pretended it was worse and refused to cooperate with rehab, delaying her recovery. What she wanted wasn't just care; she wanted Brad himself.
When she confessed her feelings and got rejected that year, her indifference might have been real. But meeting again in a different place, with both of them still single, and Brad being even more amazing than before, it's hard to say she wouldn't fall for him again and try even harder to win him over.
Honestly, she never really let go of Brad.
If that’s the case, her saving Brad might’ve had some hidden motives. But without the right timing or evidence, it’s all just my guesswork. I couldn’t just dive into it recklessly.
Love ain’t a crime, but scheming, especially when you know the other person’s already taken, is just plain nasty.
In the end, it’s Brad’s fault for being so damn perfect.
I shot him an annoyed look, blaming him for always being on someone’s mind.
Brad got what I was thinking with just one glance. He reached behind to wrap his arm around my waist and gave a gentle squeeze. My face went red, and I bit my lip to keep from making a sound. My legs went weak, and I had to lean on him for support.
I had this feeling that in the future, whenever I did something that ticked Brad off, his “punishment” might be to massage my waist.
Dr. Jensen laid out the diagnosis for everyone to see. Especially with the doc’s puzzled look, Jenny’s calm face couldn’t help but twitch a bit. She probably didn’t expect the docs in Regalia to be so blunt, straight-up exposing her lies without a second thought.
But Jenny was a pro at controlling her expressions. She quickly pulled herself together, her face as calm as ever.
Brad’s face darkened. His suspicions were confirmed. No one could be happy in such a situation. Out of gratitude for her saving his life, he had sincerely stuck by her for treatment, spending all his time caring for her, wishing he could take on her pain himself.
But Jenny, on the other hand, used Brad’s genuine care to get what she wanted.
Yeah, love ain’t a crime, but this kind of love was dirty and twisted.
The expressions of Jenny’s tall and short sidekicks were interesting. I had a hunch they knew what was up and had been watching from the sidelines. Given their relationship with Jenny and their respectful attitude, they might’ve even been supporting her.
When it came to finding a good rehab hospital, Jenny said she was new to Regalia and didn’t know much about it, so she left it to Brad. She made a point to say she’d cover the medical expenses herself.
Brad and I shot that down immediately. We’d find the hospital and pay for it.
Since Brad couldn’t give Jenny the love she wanted, we couldn’t let her bear the financial burden. She’d already sacrificed too much, including her legs.
No matter how much she schemed, right now, she was injured from saving Brad, so it made sense for us to cover the medical bills.
As we walked out of the hospital, a nurse ran out to call Brad back.
When he returned, Brad’s face looked strange. He had efficiently contacted a top-notch rehab hospital. Because of their attentive service, not much prep was needed, and Jenny could be admitted right away.
Jenny, looking a bit disappointed, kept her eyes on Brad’s back the whole time, cooperating fully. Especially after seeing Brad’s changed expression when he came out of the doc’s office again, she didn’t say a word. She kept her head slightly lowered, being gentle and compliant, and without any further fuss, handled the situation like a pro.
If you didn’t know what had happened, you’d be moved by her fragile appearance and then probably think we were ungrateful jerks.
