Chapter 271: Accident
I left the next part hanging, just to see what she'd say.
Mia had been down in the dumps for way too long because of Benjamin. It was high time she bounced back to her old self.
"Upset me? Nah, I've had a lot of time to think and sort things out. Losing my baby was tough, but it helped me move on. Isabella's wedding news came at the perfect time. Everyone's been so down because of me. Let's use her wedding as a reason to be happy."
That was awesome.
"That's great, Mia. I'm really glad to hear that."
She gave my hand a little pat. "Jane, thanks for looking out for me. I'm so lucky to have you; I would've been lost without you. And tell Brad I said thanks too. When you guys are free, I'll cook up a big meal to show my gratitude."
"We're friends, Mia. It's what we do. But hey, I won't say no to a big meal."
Mia finished her noodles with a smile and even hummed a little tune while washing the dishes. She was clearly in a good mood.
I leaned against the kitchen door, watching her load the dishwasher. I felt genuinely happy.
Mia was finally shaking off those bad vibes. A bright future was waiting for her.
After she finished tidying up, we left the house together, laughing and chatting. Just as we reached the entrance, Yancy popped up out of nowhere, waving with a big grin.
As soon as I saw Yancy, Mia did too.
Her eyes flickered for a second. She just nodded politely and turned onto the path leading to the company, cool as a cucumber.
I wanted to wave and say something, but Mia's indifference made me hesitate. It was her business, after all.
"Mia, surprise! I'm back. Are you happy? Surprised?" Yancy suddenly jumped out, ignoring the curious looks from passersby, and started bouncing around Mia.
It was the morning rush hour, and people couldn't help but stare.
I couldn't watch anymore, so I stepped aside to avoid being part of the scene.
Yancy's smile was as bright as the morning sun, his eyes full of carefree joy.
Mia, stuck because Yancy was blocking her way, had to stop and say, "Hmm."
Then she tried to sidestep him and keep walking, her attitude icy.
Yancy blocked her again, smiling and extending his hands to stop her, determined to walk her to work.
Their little tug-of-war on the path drew quite a crowd. Mia's face turned beet red, and she finally gave in, letting Yancy grab her wrist and lead her away.
Alright, if they had stuff to hash out, they should find a spot to do it.
I didn't stick around to watch and turned to leave, giving them some space. With Yancy there, Mia was safe.
Yancy had been MIA for days without even dropping Mia a message. He definitely owed her an explanation. No matter how swamped he was, he should've found a sec to send a voice message.
When I got to the school gate, I had the misfortune of running into Daniel and Zoe again.
Daniel had his hands shoved in his pockets, looking all indifferent and clearly impatient.
Zoe, on the other hand, seemed clueless about Daniel's cold shoulder, constantly trying to cozy up to him.
She kept yapping, her eyes all teary.
In the past, this act worked like a charm on Daniel.
I stood aside, curious about what Daniel would do next.
It was hard to imagine any guy, after being betrayed once, could just calmly take the betrayer back.
I wondered if Daniel could pull it off.
Waves of students and teachers passed by, and the two of them stood at the school gate, drawing a lot of attention.
Daniel was in this weird limbo of neither accepting nor rejecting her, his face losing some of its coldness.
Just when I thought Zoe was about to win him over, Daniel shoved her away. He brushed off his clothes where she had touched him and shook his arm like he was trying to get rid of something nasty, sneering, "You're disgusting. Get away from me."
Before Zoe could figure out what hit her, she stumbled back a few steps and fell to the ground.
Zoe's betrayal of Daniel had been the school's hot gossip. Her face was well-known, and she had become the poster girl for a wicked woman.
Among the passing students and teachers, there were some handsome and sympathetic guys, as well as some average-looking ones, but not a single person stepped forward to help Zoe up. Instead, they sneered, treating her like a sideshow.
I couldn't figure out what Zoe was thinking, wearing a skirt that barely covered her thighs. When she fell, the skirt was so short that any movement would reveal the lace of her underwear and the flesh of her thighs.
She reached out a hand, pouting, "Daniel, how could you be so careless? You hurt me."
Daniel frowned in disgust and snapped, "Why didn't you just die?"
