Chapter 345 Got a Boyfriend
Brad totally ignored Rafael's desperate whining and dug through the fancy box of masks. He finally found a pair of feathered glasses that matched mine and slapped them on.
Brad smirked, "You should be thanking yourself. If it weren't for your dumb idea, would you be posting selfies like a moron?"
Rafael was so mad he was practically hopping. He couldn't even find the words for a second. He just yelled, "I hate you the most."
Brad didn't give him the time of day, grabbed my hand, and we bounced, leaving Rafael to lose his mind on his own.
His plan flopped, and he made himself look like a fool. Then Rafael ran back to the door to play nice with the guests.
The guests showed up early. Right on time, Professor Evans, the host, was giving his opening speech. At some point, Rafael had swapped into a sharp suit, flashing a perfectly fake smile. Even his eyes looked all humble and sincere; he was playing the part of the cheerful rich kid now.
"Who would've thought Rafael could flip the script like that?" I elbowed Brad, who was standing next to me.
Brad's face was all serious, "Everyone can see he's just faking it. In this circle, everyone knows everyone's dirt. Look at those well-dressed folks; every smile's got its own agenda. Birthday parties, celebration parties, they're just tools to boost their status and network."
I nodded, totally getting it.
After Professor Evans wrapped up his speech, Rafael said a few words too, just the usual thank-you stuff everyone says.
Once that was over, it was time for the opening dance.
As the star of the show, Rafael had to kick off the dance. But he was flying solo, no date in sight, so he had to pick a partner from the female guests.
I suddenly got this uneasy feeling. His behavior today was so off, and I was scared he'd pick me for the opening dance.
Because at these events, the choice of dance partner by the main guy actually meant a lot. I already had a boyfriend and didn't want anyone getting the wrong idea.
Sure enough, Rafael stood on the stage, his eyes scanning the female guests, stopping on me for a solid five seconds.
Everyone followed his gaze and stared at me. I felt a chill run down my spine, and a wave of disgust started to rise.
I saw some familiar faces; there were Louis's parents, Mindy's mom, and that woman who embarrassed me that day.
Maybe because of their status and age, they were all in elegant designer dresses and didn't join in the role-playing; they stood on the outskirts. They all stared at me with no goodwill, making me super uncomfortable.
Maybe Rafael noticed my sudden change in mood and was thrown off for a second. Professor Evans shot him a warning look. He touched his nose and kept scanning the room like a searchlight, finally picking a girl in a light pink princess dress, with short, playful hair and a sweet smile. She looked young and seemed like the perfect match for Rafael.
Halfway through the music, a bunch of people slid onto the dance floor, and the vibe started to heat up.
I wasn't into these loud, fake parties. Brad got yanked away by some dude to chat. Feeling bored, I wandered off to find something tasty to munch on.
Some might say, "Jane, you're such a foodie? While others are networking and scheming, why are you always hunting for food at parties?"
I was kinda frustrated too because, besides eating, I didn't know what else to do. I loved peace and quiet, and this place was the opposite. Rather than schmoozing with these snobs, I'd rather stuff my face. Plus, the Evans family's catering was top-notch, not something you get every day.
The buffet was loaded. I grabbed a plate and picked the best-looking little cake, using a tiny fork to slowly bring it to my mouth.
Rafael suddenly popped up, "Am I so unlikable that you look upset at the thought of dancing with me?"
He startled me, and the piece of cake I had just forked fell to the ground.
Seeing the mess on the clean floor, I was so mad I didn't know what to do. I had tissues in my bag, but I left them in the car.
I worriedly stared at the cream splattered on the floor. With so many people around, if someone didn't see it and slipped, I'd be in big trouble.
"Hey, I'm talking to you. Can't you pay a little more attention?" Rafael was like a cat whose tail got stepped on, jumping up and down.
I thought, 'You're not my teacher, why should I care?'
I thought this but forced myself to respond.
I said, "What? Sorry, say that again."
Rafael was standing super close. Not bad, the girly rose scent was gone, replaced by a simple wood scent, much better.
I started daydreaming again. Rafael, though, was not happy. He brushed the hair off his forehead, adjusted his tie, and said seriously, "Jane, I've liked you since the first time I saw you. I know you're Brad's girlfriend, but you're not married yet. So I have the right to pursue you. Would you consider dating me?"
I was floored. The half piece of cake in my stomach started to churn, and I had to fight the urge to puke.
I thought, 'Rafael knows I have a boyfriend and still confesses? He knows I like someone else but still wants to pursue me?'
Rafael said, "Why are you so distracted today? I'm pursuing you. Can you please take my feelings seriously? This is my first time genuinely pursuing a girl."
"First time? Are you serious?" I looked him up and down skeptically.
I thought, 'He's such a player; he's never pursued a girl before? Who would buy that?'
