Chapter 332 Childish
It was Brad's first time getting this kind of hype from his students, and having his birthday celebrated like this. He was kinda overwhelmed and looked awkward, even his smile seemed a bit forced.
Even I found the whole scene a bit much, let alone Brad, who was pushing thirty and always tried to keep it serious and dignified.
After the screams died down, the classmates exchanged glances and then shouted together, "Now let's welcome Jane, Mr. Pitt's most beloved, and his future wife, to the stage!"
The first part was cool, but the second part caught me off guard, and my face turned beet red in an instant.
"They're right; you'll be my wife sooner or later. No need to be shy," Brad whispered in my ear, sounding a bit smug.
This didn't need to be announced in front of everyone.
I said, "Let's keep it low-key."
Brad said something else with a grin. The crowd erupted into another round of screams because of our whispers. I didn't catch what Brad said and wanted to ask, but I didn't get the chance. A group of people rushed up, surrounding us and pushing Brad and me to the main seats. Then they started chattering about the celebration process and other stuff.
Brad was the star of the show, and I was just tagging along, so I had time to look around.
As I scanned the room, I noticed a few standout faces.
I saw Adam, dressed in all black, his handsome face as cold as stone. He looked more like he was at a funeral than a birthday bash. His presence wasn't surprising since this was his place, but his all-black outfit was puzzling.
When I looked at Adam, he seemed indifferent, somewhat unwilling and dissatisfied.
I shrugged. If Adam didn't want to be here, he didn't have to come. No need for that stern, indifferent look; no one was forcing him, right?
The other was Daniel. It felt like I hadn't seen him in ages, and I hadn't really thought about him either. He was someone who was kinda irrelevant to me.
What surprised me the most was the sweet girl standing beside him, who was always chatty with me. She was now looking up at Daniel with adoring eyes, as obedient as a doll. It was Rachel.
I raised my eyebrows at Rachel from across the room, silently asking, "Did you get Daniel?"
Rachel gave me a reassuring look, silently replying, "Almost."
I smiled happily.
Rachel was good! If she could really get together with Daniel, maybe she could fundamentally change him. It was unlikely Daniel would go back to his pre-eighteen self, but at least he could be a normal person, and that would be enough.
I turned my gaze back to Daniel, who was also looking at me. His handsomeness was still striking, but I felt no emotional stirrings.
I nodded politely; Daniel paused before giving a faint smile.
It had been a long time since I saw him smile. Now, seeing it again, it was beautiful, but somehow different, like a forgotten memory I couldn't quite grasp.
Rachel, who probably hadn't seen Daniel smile before, got so excited her face turned red instantly. She clasped her hands over her chest, swaying like she was about to faint. Seeing Rachel bend over so much, I almost wanted to give her a board to keep her from breaking her back.
But I was overthinking. Rachel's back didn't break because Daniel pulled her back just in time.
I suddenly remembered Zoe from when she was eighteen. She was also bright and full of life, and she once had all of Daniel's love. But that only lasted a few years. The once passionate lovers not only broke up but became enemies. All those deep feelings from the past were now just painful memories.
Rachel was even more radiant, but who knew if her one-sided crush would have a happy ending.
By the way, I'd been pretty swamped lately. Zoe had a miscarriage and was hospitalized; I wasn't sure if she'd been discharged yet. The day she had the accident, we rushed her to the hospital and never visited her again, choosing to forget everything about her.
There were three main reasons. First, her natural hostility towards me made me want to stay away from her; second, she had done so many messed-up things to me that I couldn't feel close or compassionate towards her; third, she definitely didn't want to show her fragility and vulnerability in front of me. Not visiting her was also a form of respect.
I just wondered how her body was recovering. How did she get through such a big ordeal alone?
When Mia had a miscarriage, several of us took care of her together to help her recover. Zoe didn't even have a reliable person by her side. Whether she could recover was really uncertain.
"Lost in thought?" Brad suddenly leaned close to me, his scent invading my nostrils, always making my heart flutter.
But today, Brad's scent had a hint of jealousy, making it even more intoxicating.
Both men and women have an innate sense of vanity. There was a certain deliciousness in watching the man I loved get jealous of me.
In front of dozens of classmates, I was too embarrassed to get too close to him or make overly affectionate gestures. I just leaned to his ear and whispered, "You're better looking than them."
Brad, like a dog fed a bone, was instantly appeased. He glanced at Daniel and Adam with pride, clearly declaring his ownership.
Adam's face turned very ugly.
Daniel let go of Rachel's left hand and raised his right hand to wave at Brad, adding a touch of mockery to his handsomeness.
I thought, 'Did Daniel think Brad's behavior was childish?'
At this moment, Daniel, apart from having a handsome face, was no different from other men and was far less charming than Brad. Choosing Brad as my lifelong partner was the best decision I'd ever made.
There was no lunch; everyone just snacked to fill their stomachs. The students mentioned there would be good food in the evening, so everyone kept their stomachs empty to eat together at night.
Dinner was scheduled for 4 PM. Before that, everyone would party to their heart's content in the Crystal House.
