Chapter 334 Barbecue
Daniel's face was turning red, and you could see the veins popping on his forehead. "Seriously? It's just a game. Why you gotta be so serious?"
"But I'm for real! Are you really that cold-hearted to turn me down?" Rachel's eyes were all teary, and she had this cute little pout going on. "If I confess in front of everyone, we don't need to put in extra effort to announce it officially. I'm smart, I'll be good to you, and my love for you will only grow stronger each day. Please, just say yes. Okay?"
Right then, the host jumped in to save the day. "Alright, folks, Rachel's confession is a success! From now on, Daniel is Rachel's boyfriend. Daniel, you better treat her right. Come on, everyone, let's give it up for the new couple!"
The place went nuts with applause.
I looked at Rachel, totally impressed. No wonder she was so confident earlier. She had this all planned out.
I joined in the clapping and gave Brad a nudge. He was still in shock, but he snapped out of it, ignored Daniel's grumpy face, and started clapping too.
I saw relief and genuine happiness in Brad's eyes.
What a party! Looked like Daniel snagged himself a girlfriend! Rachel was way better than Zoe; Daniel hit the jackpot.
In the final round, the prop ended up with Brad, and he picked truth.
The host asked, "Mr. Pitt, spill the beans. How many relationships have you had, and what are their names?"
I thought, 'Great question, I wanna know too.'
Brad grinned. "I've only had one relationship in my life. Her name is Jane."
The room exploded with cheers; everyone was amazed at Brad's loyalty and envied my luck.
Blushing, I looked at Brad, who was staring at me with his intense eyes. In his gaze, I saw a tiny, blushing version of myself. The love Brad gave me was so sweet. Every day with him felt like a dream.
For four or five hours, everyone had a blast, and by the end, there was still this buzz of excitement in the air.
But something felt off. What was it? I couldn't put my finger on it.
At four, we wrapped up the party because it was dinner time, and we had to head to a new spot.
The organizer split us into groups and sorted out the rides. The dinner place was a bit far, one of those cool spots that mix food and games.
When we got there, we saw how much effort the organizers put in. The setup was epic; no wonder they made a special Facebook group for it.
The main course was BBQ, something I'd been craving forever. The venue was this huge courtyard that could fit hundreds of people.
Even though these buffet-style get-togethers can leave you smelling like a BBQ pit, they're a blast. The vibe is super chill, making it a go-to for us young folks to hang out and catch up.
When we rolled up, we saw like twenty students hustling around. They really went all out for Brad's birthday.
Brad and I shared a look, both of us feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.
The courtyard was huge. On the right, there were these long tables with light blue tablecloths, and scattered around were these small, round stools, marking the dining area.
On the left, where it was nice and breezy, there were three grills going. In the corner, a makeshift brick stove had two big iron pots bubbling away, sending out steam and this mouth-watering smell.
The wood in the stove was crackling, and the scent of lamb roasting over charcoal was making everyone's stomachs growl.
Everyone was raving about how good it smelled. They were practically drooling and couldn't wait to jump in and start grilling!
I wanted to help out too, but my classmates wouldn't let me. They said as Brad's future wife, I had the right to just chill and enjoy. Plus, it was Brad's birthday, and everyone had their tasks. My job was to stick by Brad's side. Fine by me, I thought.
On the left side of the courtyard, there were two more long tables loaded with bowls and trays of prepped ingredients. There were all kinds of skewers, a big tray of marinated fish, and tons of veggies like potato slices, making everyone's mouth water just looking at them.
I got a little teary-eyed. I suddenly realized this wasn't just a birthday party for Brad; it was his way of making one of my dreams come true.
For some reason, during my time at the Northern Institute of the Arts, I didn't think much about the climate or the food for four years.
But at National Capital University, I often found myself reminiscing about those four years, like they were etched into my soul. The more I couldn't have it, the more I missed it. Even a whiff of a familiar smell could make me emotional.
There were nights when I'd wake up and just stare at the stars and moon outside the window, replaying memories of the Northern Institute of the Arts in my head like a movie. I longed to go back, to experience the snowy campus again, to taste the unique food, and to walk hand in hand with Brad through the quiet, snow-covered campus, leaving behind two sets of intertwined footprints.
A couple of times, Brad found me awake and asked why I wasn't sleeping. I'd tell him about my longing, and he'd comfort me, patting my back and promising we'd get to relive those memories someday.
I never expected him to remember and choose today to make that dream come true.
I thought, 'Brad, why are you so amazing? I'm about to cry.'
"How did they pull all this off?" I tried to play it cool and asked Brad, "Won't it get crazy later? How are we gonna cut the cake?"
