Chapter 421 An Indifferent Face

Helen screamed at the top of her lungs, making my ears ring and my head spin.

When would Helen treat me as gently as she treated Ronan, soothing me instead of always yelling? Obviously, this was just another one of my unrealistic dreams.

"Jane, you can usually hear us whispering, but when it really matters, we can't even pinch you awake?" Ronan held Helen's shoulder in silent comfort, looking at me with a disdain that made me feel humiliated.

I just fell asleep, okay? How was that my fault? It was all because of those damn sleeping pills!

"I couldn't sleep, so I took Dad's sleeping pills," I confessed.

Ronan and Helen stared at me in disbelief for a full minute, then looked at each other in bewilderment before leaving my room one after the other, leaving me to my own devices.

What kind of parents were Ronan and Helen? Not only did they not help me with my problems, but they also despised me.

Ronan and Helen, please be kinder to me; my heart hurt so much.

Brad must have taken a risk to sneak back, choosing to come to my house late at night just to see me, only to find me sleeping so deeply, like I was unconscious, not even opening my eyes. He must be so disappointed!

Brad, I was sorry. Please don't be mad at me!

Looking at my parents' unfeeling backs, I picked up my phone, wiped away my tears, took pictures of the book and pen, and the necklace around my neck, along with my slender neck, and posted them on News Feed with the caption: [Gifts from a dream, my greatest love.]

Even though we didn't meet, I had to let Brad know that I knew he had been here and that I loved these gifts.

Later that day, while having breakfast, Helen rambled on about Brad's return.

At one in the morning, Brad knocked on the door. Ronan and Helen were shocked but also surprised and hurried to wake me up.

But no matter how much they tried to wake me, it was useless. Every attempt failed, leaving the precious time to Brad's one-sided conversation, as he longed for our missed reunion.

With tears in my eyes, I swallowed my porridge and complained softly, "Mom, you even pinched me. Why didn't you pinch harder? If you had, I would have woken up."

"Don't always blame your mom. You sleep so deeply and still blame her. You never look for the reason in yourself." My dad quickly defended my mom.

Fine, it was my fault. I shouldn't have taken that effective sleeping pill.

But missing such an important event made me so sad. As qualified parents, couldn't they comfort my broken heart?

I swore, from now on, even if I had to stay awake all night, I would never take sleeping pills again.

Although this was an unsuccessful meeting and I didn't see Brad, at least Brad saw me, which eased his longing a bit. It wasn't entirely meaningless.

So, I was in the best mood I'd been in for two months.

That good mood lasted until Hugh and Emma showed up at our house, and Daniel tagged along.

Ever since the incident with Daniel, things between our families had been pretty strained. Now, we just exchanged awkward hellos when we ran into each other and didn't really keep in touch otherwise.

We weren't thrilled about their visit, but out of respect for Brad and their cheerful demeanor, we had to play nice and entertain them.

Another big reason we let them in was that I wanted to ask about Brad. Because of Jenny's condition, Brad and I couldn't contact or meet privately, but there was no rule against his family communicating.

To my surprise, Rachel followed Daniel in, grinning from ear to ear.

"Rachel? What's going on? Are you here to announce your relationship?" I found a moment to ask Rachel quietly.

Rachel's face turned bright red, and she shyly twisted her body, whispering, "No, don't say that."

When Daniel walked in, he was all smiles. He'd always been respectful to my parents over the years. But after hearing my words, his smile faded, and his ears seemed to turn a bit red.

Daniel, shy? No way!

Everyone sat down to chat. Rachel, with her lively personality, quickly forgot her embarrassment and joined the conversation, laughing brightly from time to time. Her lively demeanor even made Ronan and Helen laugh.

When they came in, Emma didn't introduce Rachel much, just said she was Daniel's classmate. But I noticed that Emma looked at Rachel more seriously than she ever did at Zoe.

Rachel kept talking, and Daniel, annoyed by the noise, sent Rachel and me back to my room.

"You two are moving fast, already visiting Daniel's family," I teased Rachel while hugging a stuffed animal.

Rachel had a great personality—outgoing, cheerful, and determined. Once she set her sights on something, she worked hard to achieve it. Although I didn't know how Rachel ended up in Sunhaven, it was definitely due to her deliberate efforts.

Rachel blushed at my teasing but didn't avoid it like other girls. Instead, she blushed and told me it wasn't what I thought.

"So, what is it? Spill."

Rachel was about to speak when there were two knocks on the bedroom door, and Daniel walked in.

He looked around seriously, then sat on the small sofa, sighing, "Your room is set up just like the old house."

I didn't respond to Daniel's comment, just smiled politely. "Why are you here when girls are chatting?"

This was practically telling Daniel to leave. Daniel said seriously, "Don't overthink it. If Brad hadn't asked me, do you think I'd willingly come to see your cold face?"
