Chapter 393 Original Intention
Amelia stared at me for a while, a hint of sadness in her eyes. She mumbled, "I shouldn't have asked you..."
It was pitch dark outside, and the winter night was chilly, but I didn't feel cold at all. My heart was warm. I thought about all the moments with Brad, the care and affection he showed me. Every memory made me feel cozy inside.
Brad loved me so much, and I loved him just as much. With both of us working together, how could anything go wrong? The tough times were just temporary; we could definitely get through them!
That night, I lay in bed holding my phone. I had just seen a photo of Brad, knowing he was okay. I had also stood up for myself; I felt amazing.
Amelia was right; I had finally grown up. I learned to protect my space and fight back against anyone who tried to invade it.
I was still awake when my phone rang. I picked it up and was stunned.
Benjamin! It was actually Benjamin.
Why was Benjamin calling me? Was it about Mia? They both had moved on and said their goodbyes. There shouldn't be any more drama.
I swiped to answer, and Benjamin's slightly hoarse voice came through.
From his voice, I could tell Benjamin wasn't doing well. At least, he wasn't living the life he wanted.
But who could he blame? Life was like that; you won some, you lost some. Gains and losses were results of choices you had made, and there was no going back. Even if you wanted to, there might not be a way.
Benjamin said, "Jane, it's Benjamin."
"I know. What's up?" I replied, not wanting to say much.
Brad was different from me. Once he loved someone, he loved them for a lifetime.
I asked, "So, what do you want to say?"
Benjamin said, "I want to say that Brad is worth your time and waiting. If needed, I'll help. Making the Taylor family disappear is just a matter of time."
Benjamin was here to help me. After I had scolded him so badly, he didn't hold a grudge and was still willing to help me!
No, Benjamin wasn't helping me; he was helping Brad. Or rather, Benjamin didn't want Brad to share the same sad fate as him.
Brad and Jenny's situation must have spread among the alumni. Benjamin and Brad were roommates and very close, so Benjamin must know.
I asked, "Why are you helping us?"
Benjamin was silent for a good ten seconds, then he said wistfully, "Because I don't want to see two people who truly love each other being torn apart by external forces. The result is too cruel and too painful."
My heart ached deeply.
Benjamin had suffered this kind of pain, so he didn't want Brad and me to go through it again.
Benjamin's words made me realize he was still the same guy who loved Mia back then. Life just threw too many twists and turns his way, and he got lost in the shuffle.
I said, "Thanks."
Benjamin replied, "Hang in there. If you need anything, call me anytime. My phone's always on."
I nodded. "Okay."
Life got its troubles, but with so many people willing to help, it was not all bad.
Everyone hits rough patches. As long as you keep pushing and stay true to yourself, no matter how tough things get, you'll make it through.
I slept like a baby that night.
In the morning, I found breakfast and a note on the kitchen table: [Jane, I'm off to training camp. I'll let you know when it's over. While I'm gone, stay safe; call the cops if there's danger, and you can also reach out to Adam. And don't skip more than an hour of basic combat training each day.]
I got the part about calling the cops. Amelia was now a reserve officer, all about handling things legally.
But what was the deal with Adam? What was going on between Amelia and Adam? Whatever, I'd grill Amelia about it when she got back.
As for the combat training, I'd already started learning with Amelia. My body ached from it.
But to get better at defending myself when Brad wasn't around, I had to stick with it, no matter how tough it got.
Once I nailed those combat skills, let's see who'd dare mess with me!
During my morning class, Professor Evans messaged me, saying all the artworks for the project I was handling were done well. He'd submitted them for final approval; if everything checked out, my eight million dollars would be in my account soon.
In half a day, I'd be a little rich lady. Earning financial freedom with my own skills made me super happy.
I wasn't very ambitious. As long as I had enough to eat, warm clothes, a place to live, could take care of my parents, and give my future kids a cozy home, that was enough.
Now I could achieve all this with my own skills, which was awesome.
It was the sunniest part of the day, and my seat was bathed in sunlight, bright and warm.
No matter how cold winter got, there'd always be sunlight, just like Brad and me. Even though things were tough, with our joint efforts, we'd get through it all.
When the teacher wasn't looking, I snapped a perfect selfie and posted it. [Time can't erase love, and space can't separate hearts that lean on each other.]
I admired my goofy smile, feeling all warm inside.
Not being able to contact me didn't mean he cared any less. Maybe he was just tied up and couldn't reach out.
Even if he couldn't see or hear me, Brad must be missing me just as much as I missed him.
