Chapter 509 Always Here
I held Lillian back from confronting Ryan and told her to keep it from Jane. She agreed, but the moment she got home, she spilled everything to Jane.
Jane was the gentlest and most stubborn of the three of us. Ever since I found out Lillian told her about my breakup, I’d been anxiously waiting for her to reach out.
It didn’t take long; Jane finally called. I answered, my hands shaking, not sure how to handle her questions.
Breaking up was a big deal, and not telling my best friends right away was pretty messed up.
Jane saw my anxiety as me not being ready to let go of the past five years, which made her even more careful in comforting me.
She said, "Amelia, come over here. I miss you. Besides, Regalia is huge, and there are more opportunities here. I’m so bored alone; come over, work, and make money here, okay?"
That’s Jane for you, always so understanding. She knew I didn’t want to talk much, so she didn’t push me and instead offered a way out.
Honestly, I was doing pretty well at my old job. In just over six months, I’d completed several good projects and earned decent commissions. My supervisor valued me and had plans to nurture me, often praising my achievements in meetings. Even the higher-ups knew about me.
But I heard the company had some unknown connection with Ryan. Not wanting any future drama with him, I’d already decided to quit when I got back.
There had to be a place where I could happily earn money without any ties to the Price family.
Jane’s invitation made my decision to leave the company even easier, and I accepted her offer right away.
I wasn’t running away; I just wanted to start fresh somewhere else.
Lillian fully supported my decision to go to Regalia and join Jane.
When my supervisor got my resignation email, he called me immediately and tried hard to convince me to stay.
We talked for about half an hour, but I didn’t change my mind.
Regretfully, my supervisor hung up and told me to contact him if I ever changed my mind. As long as he was still with the company, he’d find a way to help me return.
I was really grateful for that.
I told my family about my plan to go to Regalia, and my parents were very supportive. My brother, in particular, praised me, saying I’d finally made a good decision.
When I arrived in Regalia, it was springtime.
Jane picked me up and took me to her fancy apartment, telling me to stay until I found a suitable job.
Jane’s family was much better off than Lillian’s and mine. Plus, Jane herself was exceptional, always giving her parents no reason to worry.I knew her future was going to be bright, but I didn't realize just how radiant her present already was.
Honestly, standing in her sunroom, I felt a pang of envy.
To help me mend my broken heart and move on quickly, Jane introduced me to her college friend, Mia. The three of us spent our days eating, drinking, and having fun together.
Mia was also an exceptional woman, with a lovely voice and a gentle demeanor. I liked her instantly.
Three days after staying at Jane's, I started actively job hunting and submitted several online applications related to my major.
One evening, Jane and I planned to go out for dinner.
The restaurant was near Jane's school, not far from home. We walked and chatted, expecting a pleasant evening.
But we ran into Ryan.
Just around the corner from the restaurant, Jane suddenly stopped, her face falling as she tightened her grip on my hand.
I looked up and saw Ryan standing under a tree, with Grace clinging to his arm like a sloth, trying to meld into him.
For some reason, Grace was pouting and whining, shaking Ryan's arm, and tiptoeing to reach his lips.
Ryan was about to kiss Grace when he saw me out of the corner of his eye. He stopped and turned to look at me coldly.
I intended to walk away with Jane, but Ryan, as if to show off, tightened his grip on Grace's chin and kissed her hard on her blood-red lips.
The force made Grace yelp, and her chin turned a different color.
When I first broke up, I suffered every night, wondering how I would feel if I saw Ryan again, whether I would break down on the spot.
But when I actually saw Ryan, I felt nothing.
Especially when witnessing them kiss in public, it felt like watching a scene from a movie—purely for entertainment.
Ryan said, "Amelia, I remember telling you that was your last chance. You didn't seize it. Now you follow me here, choosing the moment I'm with Grace. What do you want? Don't tell me you regret it."
I almost laughed out of anger.
Which of Ryan's eyes could see my regret? And who gave him the audacity to think I showed up on purpose while he was with Grace?
Self-righteousness was a condition that needed to be addressed.
"Whose dog got loose and is barking here? Jane, did you hear that?" I sneered, successfully seeing Ryan clench his jaw in anger.
I couldn't help but chuckle. Despite the five-year relationship that had hurt me deeply, I remained myself, my pride intact.
Always.
I put my hand to my ear, pretending to listen, and nodded at Jane with a smile. "Listen, do you hear that? Someone's dog is out without a muzzle, causing a disturbance."
