Chapter 291: Engagement
I felt this weird sense of relief wash over me.
But no way in hell was I gonna keep a bracelet that Jenny had worn.
So, I asked Brad what he was gonna do with it, and he said he'd give it to Emma.
Sounded like a solid plan to me.
I was not one to hold grudges, and Brad didn't wanna make a big deal out of it, so the whole bracelet drama just blew over.
I just hoped Jenny learned her lesson from all this.
Time flew by, and before I knew it, it was the end of September. Mia and I had already booked our round-trip tickets to Eldoria City.
My folks were pretty pissed when they found out I wasn't coming home again. They whined about how I only cared about having fun and never thought about them.
Especially Helen. She kept dabbing her eyes with a tissue, weakly accusing me of not caring about my parents and never coming home.
It took forever to calm them down, but they finally agreed to let me go to Eldoria City for the wedding.
Brad was even more bummed when he found out I couldn't be with him, but I managed to cheer him up with some sweet talk and a bit of whining. He was so frustrated, kept complaining that we never had time alone together.
Our dating life was definitely different from others. Even though we lived together, it always felt like we spent more time apart.
Didn't I want a few romantic days alone with him? Of course, I did, but in the real world, things don't always go as planned.
It's the same for everyone.
Louis and Mindy's engagement party was on October 2nd. We planned to visit her at her dorm a few days earlier to give her the gift.
I placed a pair of kissing dolls on her desk and said they were an engagement gift. Mindy's eyes lit up immediately, and she rested her chin on the desk, staring at them, totally delighted.
Mindy came from a wealthy family and had seen all kinds of fancy stuff. It was actually these simple, ordinary trinkets that made her so happy.
"Where'd you get these? They're so cute." Mindy gently poked the dolls' plump bottoms with her fingertip, her smile never fading.
"It's an engagement gift. How could I not put my heart into it? But most importantly, I wish you all the best, Mindy. Congrats on your engagement!"
Mindy carefully put the dolls in her bag and patted it solemnly. "I'll take them home and put them in my room. Louis will love them too when he knows they're from you."
"Mindy." I said, sitting next to her and holding her hand. She was my beloved friend. Though I hadn't known her for long, I sincerely wished her a lifetime of happiness. "Marrying the person you've loved for so many years must be so fulfilling. I get how you feel, but as your friend, I wanna share some heartfelt advice."
"Okay, go ahead." Mindy said while hugging my arm, acting all spoiled.
"Love is super important to you. But you're also someone who needs to be loved in return. The key to a lasting relationship is mutual effort. So, Mindy, promise me that in your future, you'll never lose yourself. My mom always tells me: love yourself first before you love others. If you don't know how to love yourself, no one else will."
Hearing my words, Mindy smiled, but tears started welling up in her eyes. She rubbed her eyes and complained, "Why you gotta be so sentimental? You're making me cry. Jane, thank you. I've loved Louis since I was a teenager and even confessed to him. He was so cold back then, never even looking at me. He said he liked someone else and told me not to waste my time on him.
He told me your name, showed me your portfolio, your report cards from childhood. I even saw you focused on drawing at your desk. Every version of you was so captivating. Jane, you were like the rising sun. Even I liked you too, so how could Louis not? I was so desperate back then. I thought I'd never have a chance with Louis. So I hated you and disliked you.
When you and Louis decided to date, it was the most painful time of my life. I even thought about ending my life several times. If it weren't for wanting to see him happy, I wouldn't have made it.
Luckily, you two didn't end up together. Now I not only get to be with the person I love, but I also gained a wonderful friend like you. How lucky am I?
Jane, you're my best friend. If you don't come to my engagement party, I'll be very disappointed. I want you to be my bridesmaid."
I never realized I had caused Mindy so much pain. Even though I didn't mean to, I still felt guilty.
I really wanted to go to her engagement party, but I couldn't.
Since I had already left Louis's world, I couldn't take even a single step back. I had my principles.
But Mindy wouldn't agree and even threatened to call off the engagement if I didn't go.
So I had to go.
Brad was super unhappy about me attending Louis's engagement party and insisted on coming with me. Unfortunately, the project client was coming on October 2nd, and as the project manager, Brad had to be there the whole time.
After hearing this, Brad was so disheartened that he could barely speak. He had no choice but to let me go alone.
Louis and I had been high school classmates for three years, and many of our high school friends attended his engagement party.
Daniel's appearance was both expected and surprising.
I was surprised because he had always been an indifferent and reserved person. Even when running into old classmates, he would at most give a faint smile and exchange a few polite words. It was as if he was cold inside and out, and no one could really get close to him.
So, seeing him at Louis's engagement party was truly unbelievable. Besides the reasons mentioned above, he had also hidden letters Louis had written to me which had shattered Louis's youthful dreams. In a way, Louis resented him. And Daniel himself harbored significant animosity towards Louis.
Everyone was surprised that Daniel came to the engagement party.
When I ran into Daniel in front of the hotel, I suddenly understood why Brad insisted on coming with me.
It wasn't Louis he was worried about; it was Daniel.
Mindy had mentioned before that since it was just an engagement party, both families agreed not to make it too extravagant, just simple and elegant.
Even so, the Anderson family chose one of the finest hotels in Regalia for the engagement party.
