Chapter 310 Mysterious
I walked off and totally missed whatever Adam said next. All I caught was the girl's squeal, then it went dead quiet.
When I opened my canvas, I couldn't help but chuckle. That girl was a riot, even Adam was floored by her. Youth... it's a wild thing, isn't it?
Adam only seemed to light up around these young girls.
As usual, once Brad got swamped, our plans went out the window.
He called me at five. "Sorry, babe, it's still crazy here, can't make it for dinner. What do you want? I'll get it delivered."
At least he remembered to feed me.
I was kinda bummed since it had been ages since Brad and I had a proper dinner together.
So, no shocker that our last-minute trip to Sunhaven was a bust.
But he was working his butt off for our future. Though I was disappointed, I felt even more heartache for him. When Brad's sorry text came through, I couldn't blame him. I just told him it was cool, no need to order food, I'd handle it.
After hanging up, I called Mia. Yancy had some work to finish at the office, so we decided to hit the food street first. We would have a big meal and a great night once he was done.
Regalia was buzzing, with markets and shopping centers everywhere, packed with all sorts of stuff.
Mia and I, both from modest backgrounds, had a thing for food streets. We found a lot of our decor there. My fave was the endless snacks lined up, just thinking about it made me drool.
Mia always said my looks didn't match my personality. I had an angelic face but loved simple, everyday things.
That was me, real and free, believing that hard work brought happiness.
Walking through Central Park, we eagerly anticipated reaching the food street - a kaleidoscope of flavors, with stalls on both sides, each offering something unique.
We wandered from stall to stall, soon carrying a bunch of bags.
Halfway down the street, Yancy joined us. He took our bags to the car, then came back to hang with Mia and me.
Mia's attitude towards Yancy had softened a lot, making Yancy super excited and more attentive to her every day.
This made me, the third wheel, feel both jealous and a bit sad. I couldn't help but wonder when Brad would have time to hang out with me, enjoying this everyday life together.
But picturing Brad and me strolling through this busy food street just didn't seem right.
So, it was better for me to come with Mia.
With Yancy's help, we wandered even more freely, all the way to the end of the street. Ahead was an undeveloped open space blocked by blue iron sheets, hiding whatever was inside.
A stall owner said a new community was going up here, and the land was already sold to a northern real estate company. Construction would start soon.
Since there were fewer stalls and people here, we decided to head back and find a place to eat.
We hadn't gone far when Mia suddenly stopped. "Jane, check it out."
I followed her gaze and froze.
A few dozen feet ahead, a tall dude was pushing a wheelchair. Jenny, in a simple white dress, with her hair down and light makeup, looked stunning but distant.
This Jenny felt like a stranger. Same face, but a whole different vibe.
But yeah, it was definitely Jenny, just showing a side of herself we didn't know about.
I couldn't help but laugh. She wasn't doing rehab at midnight but strolling the food street. She really couldn't go a day without stirring up some drama. I wondered what kind of trouble she was brewing now.
"Jenny's got quite the social life," I said, dripping with sarcasm.
"The rehab hospital is far from here. Isn't she tired?" Mia asked, puzzled.
"Who knows what her deal is." I shrugged, totally baffled by her actions.
As we chatted, a sleek black luxury car rolled up beside her. The driver opened the back door, the tall guy bent down to place her in the back seat, and the driver folded the wheelchair and stashed it in the trunk.
It looked like Jenny was some rich girl out for a stroll.
Suddenly, a bunch of questions hit me.
Whose car was that? Where were they taking Jenny? What was Jenny's real story?
"Jane, what's on your mind?" Mia nudged me.
I snapped back, glancing at the car's taillights, and voiced my thoughts, "I was wondering, what's the deal with those two guys and Jenny? Brad said her family never visited after her injury. Isn't that weird? I always felt there was something off about her."
"It's not that strange. When I had a big incident, none of my family showed up either. Everyone's got their own secrets. Jenny graduated from the same university as us, and there were no bad rumors about her back then. Though her actions are kinda gross, there shouldn't be anything more to it."
As Mia said this, her mood dipped a bit. Yancy's big hand promptly rested on her shoulder, giving her silent support. She turned her head and smiled at him, "I'm fine."
"I can't say for sure. The people around Jenny treat her with unusual respect. Every time I see her like that, I feel like she's not the Jenny we know. It's strange, mysterious."
"What do you mean, not the Jenny we know? Jenny can be whoever she wants. As long as you and Brad are solid, and Brad's feelings for you are firm, she won't have a chance. We don't need to know or care about anything else." Mia tried to comfort me.
I was kinda lazy and went with the flow. Since Mia's words made sense, I thought of letting it go. Brad was totally into me, no matter how scheming Jenny was, it wouldn't matter.
But Yancy suddenly said, "Jane's gut feeling isn't wrong. That car costs over three million dollars. People who own such cars are either rich or powerful. She is definitely not that simple. Mr. Pitt and Jane's relationship is indeed good, but we should still learn more about Jenny."
