Chapter 32 Zoe's Betrayal
The school was huge, and there were tons of people.
In this crowd, Brad and I always seemed to run into each other in random spots. It felt like magic!
When Brad showed up, I suddenly got an idea.
Seeing my eyes light up, Brad, always cautious, took a step back and got defensive. "What do you want?"
I made a face at him. Despite looking tough, he always acted delicate. What a quirk.
"Brad, do you know any private detectives? Can you hook me up?" I whispered sneakily.
Brad grabbed my collar, making sure I was serious before speaking. "Who do you want to investigate?"
I thought for a moment. "Last week, some exchange students from National Capital University came here. There's a girl who looks familiar, and I want to find out who she is."
"Really?" Brad squinted at me.
I was speechless. It wasn't that simple.
"What else?" I retorted.
Brad replied, "I won't help unless you tell me the whole story."
His attitude was annoying, but I had no one else to ask. After thinking it over, I had to give in and tell him the truth.
Brad was the only capable person I knew here!
Plus, I was doing this for his brother's love life.
"Fine, I want to investigate Zoe. Something feels fishy about her." I looked at him eagerly, but Brad stared at me for a long time before saying, "Jane, why are you so concerned about Daniel's affairs?"
'What? Shouldn't I be, Brad? This is about whether your brother is being betrayed,' I thought.
"Come on, spill the beans. What's the real deal?"
Brad's imposing manner was intimidating. Even though he always doted on me, I was a bit scared. I timidly recounted what I had seen that night. After listening, Brad's usually gentle face turned dark and stormy, veins bulging on his hand like he might hit someone.
"So, you're doing this to catch Zoe's mistake and make her break up with Daniel?" Brad asked, his eyes dark.
"Of course not, Brad. What are you thinking? Even if Daniel breaks up now, I wouldn't want him back." I quickly shook my head. Not to mention Brad's terrifyingly dark expression, just based on Daniel's repeated disappointments, I could never have any feelings for him again.
I admitted I wanted to know the whole story, but it really had nothing to do with what Brad mentioned. I felt wronged.
"Brad, the promise we made back then was just a joke, not serious. I used to follow Daniel around, and he said I was clingy and caused him trouble. I later realized I was too presumptuous. I apologized to Daniel in front of everyone, vowing not to cling to him and to steer clear of messing with his thing with Zoe. My mom even said that what happened back then was a joke, and it's all in the past. Whether he breaks up or not has nothing to do with me."
Brad seriously observed me for a while, confirming I was telling the truth. His expression softened a bit. He reached out and ruffled my hair forcefully. I angrily but silently fixed my now-messy hair.
It was tough asking for help these days.
Brad asked, "Why do you care so much? Haven't you been hurt enough?"
"Brad, Daniel and I had a history. Even if we can't be together, I don't want him getting duped. You're his brother; don't you give a damn if he's being strung along by a shady woman?"
"I'll help you, but you gotta swear off Daniel's drama after this," Brad replied.
"Okay, this is the last time."
"Good girl." Brad ruffled my hair again. 'I'm not a pet,' I thought.
Unable to resist my persistence, Brad took me out for a burger and then left with my earnest pleas.
I anxiously waited, hoping for news within a week.
I didn't expect Brad to be so efficient. By the next evening, he had already gotten back to me with the results, which impressed me greatly.
Brad and I sat in a corner of a pizza place, like spies meeting. He placed a file folder in front of me and whispered, "Take a look. It's a soap opera."
"You read it?" I asked.
Brad nodded, his incredibly handsome face calm and unperturbed, without a trace of anger from seeing his brother being betrayed.
Brad's tolerance was extraordinary.
I took the folder and opened it, reading page by page.
It turned out the male student was John Wilson, from a high-ranking family in Northport. He and Zoe had been classmates since they were kids, real childhood pals.
Both being from Northport's upper class, their families were well-matched, and their parents were happy to see their close relationship.
Growing up together, they were deeply in love and had long agreed to attend the same university and get married after graduation.
Unfortunately, Zoe's father got into trouble and was arrested, causing the Saldana family to fall from grace and be ostracized by Northport's elite.
The Wilson family immediately reneged on their agreement, strictly ordering John to cut off all contact with Zoe.
John truly liked Zoe and was willing to go against his family for her.
The Wilson family's elders had no choice but to use some means to force Zoe and her mother out of Northport, making them move to Sunhaven to make a living.
A pair of lovers was forcibly separated, leaving them with regrets.
Since then, they had cut off all contact, thinking it was over for this lifetime. But unexpectedly, an exchange of National Capital University brought these former lovers back together in the vast sea of people.
They hadn't voluntarily separated back then, leaving many regrets. After years apart, they reunited, and with just a few words, they were in each other's arms, rekindling their old flame.
The thin two pages only detailed the relationship between John and Zoe, without a single word about Daniel. Yet every word spoke of Daniel being betrayed by a woman.
I quickly finished reading the file, feeling a deep sense of melancholy.
Zoe's late-night rendezvous with John after their reunion showed her deep feelings for him. Even with an outstanding new boyfriend like Daniel, she couldn't forget John.
Everyone said the first love was the hardest to forget, so maybe John was Zoe's first love.
Proud as Daniel was, he would never have imagined that the girl he loved with all his heart was hiding such a big secret, nor that the seemingly pure and innocent girl would be so eager to be intimate with another man behind his back.
Honestly, I felt a bit of schadenfreude.
After laughing, I was still at a loss, completely unsure of how to handle this situation.
